Mora: The villain refused to acknowledge immediately after the fight that he had erred even after watching a replay of the moment of question in the 11th round. Mora finally came around on Sunday, though, telling his boss – Keith Kizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission – that it was a low blow and Mares should’ve lost a point, Kizer told Yahoo! Sports. Kizer said Mora “is displeased with himself.” That’s a start. Mora won’t be suspended but also won’t be working main events in the near future. He’ll have to earn that distinction with his performances in subsequent fights. “In a situation like this, the referee needs to get with me and also with some of the senior referees here in Nevada, which I’m encouraging, to learn from this performance and improve in the future,” Kizer told Yahoo! “He’ll need to take his time coming back and build himself back up. I have a very high confidence he’ll be able to do so.” Mora has his work cut out.
DIE!!!
If I was the Ref I wouldve warned Mares in 2nd or 3rd round and took a point off in the 4th or 5th. If he kept his act up I wouldve DQ'ed him by round 8.
The sad part is that everytime Agbeko got hit in the balls Mora would warn Agbeko for stupid stuff he didnt do.
If it was Agbeko throwing those lowblows he wouldve been DQ'd after Round #3
100% agree.
It's a matter of opinion, and in MINE...Montiel earned the right to receive the benefit of the doubt after surviving a hard punch like that. Larry Holmes went down as if SHOT by Ernie Shavers, the ref did not stop the fight straight away, he gave Larry the benefit of the doubt and Larry came back to win, same deal in the Snipes fight. Top level boxers get knocked down. They deserve the right to overcome the adversity of a knockdown, defend themselves, and possibly recover. When Gatti dropped Ward face first into a turnbuckle with a shot that busted his eardrum and ruined his equilibrium for the rest of the fight (and the rest of his life) the ref did the right thing by giving Ward a chance to defend himself and stay in the fight. With the heart of a Champion, Micky held on. Montiel couldn't hold on and after taking one more left hook, Mora was in there to stop it.
That's fair play, IMO. He did the right thing by giving Montiel the right to continue after what he went through to get up. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Refs have a tough job.
Richard Steele is booed to this day for doing the RIGHT thing in 1990.
Your take about the bouts that you just mentioned were all hindsight, and the refs did what they are supposed to do, and I wholeheartedly agree, maybe except the Richard Steele thingy with the JCC fight with Taylor. I must have read you wrong because I thought that we're talking about Russell Mora as a ref, and his previous performances. I wasn't implying that he should've stopped the fight right then and there when Montiel got dropped, but he didn't do the proper procedure, and that is to wave a boxer who just got knocked down to walk towards him, and that is were he can tell if a boxer is still fit to fight. The walk after a KD is a MUST, it is not just to wipe a fallen boxer's gloves off...
Good call? Really???
When a fallen boxer just got up from a KD, (I wouldn't even mention the nasty KD which made Montiel look like he's having a seizure), the first thing a knowledgeable ref would do is to motion the boxer to walk towards him. The aforementioned boxer will be judged from the way he will walk towards the ref and if he is still fit to continue. If he staggers or falls down again, fight's over. The boxer just shrugs his shoulder and didn't even tried to walk towards the ref and referee Mora instead walks towards Montiel as if saying, "Don't let me down puto, you have to fight and I don't give a fukk!"
That's totally messed up man...

The thing is - I like Mares. I really do. But it doesn't take away from the fact that, IF the ref had been doing his job PROPERLY, by the time the 11th round low blow "knock down" occured - it wasn't that a point should have been takin from Mares at that point. By that point, since he finally been admonished with a time out in the action after another low blow earlier (a point should have been taken at that time but wasn't)... He should have been DQ'd by then, not just a point taken away. Again as I stated, IF Mora had been doing his job properly in the first place. And that's nothing against Mares, that's Mora's issue.
At some point though, and hopefully now that there's more controversy with it after the Darchinyan and Agbeko fights - young Mares has got to really work on getting those punches up. It comes off as either amatuerish/lack of skill, or just straight out doesn't give a sh!t on his part. After seeing the video of Mares doing the low blow pounds of pressure and the effects of a fighter being hit low (I think it said his punch was 780 pounds of pressure hitting on a manniquins groin area) I can't begin to imagine how much wind those low blows took out of Joseph Agbeko's sails. Kudos for him not pulling a Zab Judah during the fight.

Corrupt or incompetent, or just having a terrible night, I really have no idea. But one thing that's interesting is that Mora was the same ref that allowed an incredibly game Fernando Montiel to continue after taking that monster shot from Donaire and after somehow getting to his feet (ready to go) before 10. I actually think in that instance, he made an incredibly tough... GOOD call... by giving the benefit of the doubt to Montiel in that moment, especially with the heart and determination he showed in getting up from a shot like that. Donaire then swarmed and landed one more left hook before Mora jumped in but he did the RIGHT thing by giving Montiel a chance to defend himself and not just stopping that fight straight away, as many refs might have done given how hard Montiel went down.

Agbeko should be outraged
his quotes on this have been more relaxed than you'd think
Mora is a dick, and it's good he fessed up
but taking a point? Mares coulda been DQ'd
KD's were false too
guy shouldn't be reffing anymore at all
Dude, in every single fight he has been BIASED towards Mexicans.
He DQ'ed Peterson after like 4 Lowblows against Rios?
He screwed either Vic or Katsidis, i forgot which, against some Mexican calling it a KD when it never was
Another fight he screwed that I forgot
and now he ruined this fight.
Boxing needs to give out lifetime BANS for stuff like this.
You have 2 fighters who train all their life and there is millions of dollars on the line and fighters careers on the line, so you hire a Mexican Referre out of the Home Depot parking lot? Does that make sense?
You know who was sitting on their ass in Las Vegas?
Kenny Bayless
Steve Smoger
Jeff Nady
yet this puto got to ref the fight after he has shown huge BIAS for Mexicans? and Mares has a HISTORY of Low-blows?
When you Ref a fight you watch the fighters previous fights, he knows about the low-blows but couldnt do anything.
Im tired of punkass puto's Judges/Ref's who blatantly cheat/lie/get corrupted/plain stupid never getting any punishment except "more training".
Whats the point then? Stupid is as stupid does. These guys need to be pushed down the stairs out of the place as soon as they screw up and banned from boxing.
You dont put retards in a position to screw peoples careers.
Why you think they are all corrupt? Because even if you get CAUGHT all you will get is some "training"
As for the bolded... I actually thought Mora did the right thing in the Rios/Peterson fight - WHICH IS WHY the fight last night seems even worse because Mora knows better! If you watch his face in replays or see his face in photos, he has his eyes glued on Agbekos face - even when the low blows connect. It's almost as if he refused to look at the low punches, which makes it seem even more shady. I don't know if Mora did this intentionally, or if he is really bias towards Mexican fighters, but at the very least he showed himself as completely incompetent in this fight and as I said before - since we know that he has the capability to call a low blow fight properly, it definately sends signals out of something a little more then just straight up incompetency on his part. His refusal to acknowledge any errors on his part when being shown the replay by Jim Gray seems to make it even more blatant. The only reason he's saying anything different today is because of the massive amount of **** he was bound to hear about it after the fight.
F*** Mora. If you have any doubt he was bribed watch the fight again and watch many times he warns Agbeko for doing nothing while ignoring 25+ low blows from Mares (who's is well known as a dirty fighter even prior to this fight). Dude is flat out corrupt.
I dont think he took any bribe but looking back at his history of refereeing boxers of mexican descent he seem to favour them, the fact that he quick did his job by DQ Peterson against Rios is very compelling
agreed
that's something to think about
he did a great job in that fight
peterson was throwing legraphed and intentional low blows
and the second mora figured that out he took pts away
and made a quick call for a DQ when he realized they were intentional and a pattern was developing'
mares developed a pattern of hitting agbeko low
and moor systematically found ways around even taking a single point away
i think he did it intentionally
there's no other explanation
he was either acting alone, or on the orders of others
but he threw that fight
Corrupt or incompetent, or just having a terrible night, I really have no idea. By making TWO BAD knockdown calls against Agbeko and not taking a single point from Mares for repeated low blows, Mora literally took the fight from the rightful winner (Agbeko) and gave it to Mares. That fight should be declared a NC, the belt returned to Agbeko, and a rematch ordered.
Or if it had been properly officiated, Agbeko should have won by a close decision.
I would've hate to have lost money on this fight.
if i had found 2.5 to one odds (like they were talking about on the tv) i woould have bet agbeko
i mean 2.5 to one for mares?
they must have been nuts
or in on it ^^^
Being incompetent is different from taking a bribe.
There isn't any proof he was paid off.
There is some proof he's incompetent.
Boxing isn't monitored to the level other sports are, most likely because they don't have quite as much money and no real national authority.
