It's a shame a great performance by Mares was tainted by his low blows but they weren't on purpose. He's not a cheap fighter and wasn't meaning to throw them that way but he did.
I thought some of the low blows were caused by Agbeko pulling Mares head down and many were right on the belt line in which the ref said was a legal shot.
I thought Mares outboxed Agbeko and the only real punch that effective for Agbeko was the counter right.
The low blows tainted a great performance by Mares.
I agree most of what the Showtime commentators were calling low blows were actually on the beltline, and Agbeko was deliberately using the head, yet they didn't say much about it.
I thought the Showtime crew were a disgrace tonight. They were extremely BIASED in favor of Agbeko and against Mares from the beginning, especially that slimey old Al Bernstein.
They wanted the Don King fighter to win for some reason.
Mares won the fight by a wider margin than the scorecards indicated. That 113-113 score was ridiculous, but they never mentioned that it was.
Interesting how in the Super Six, Andre Ward's home referees have permitted him to foul as much as he wants to, yet Al Bernstein doesn't seem to mind at all.
Look at this Nazi :nonono:

doesn't matter if he threw them on purpose or not, what matters is that they were not called by the ref, who's soul purpose is to call those type things during a fight.....
and sad to say, because of the ref's incompetence, i can't subscribe to the mares win......... it's about as impressive as a paper champ win.......
i don't fault mares, he fought his arse off, and he came to win, he just had complete carte blanche inside that ring with russell mora......
mares could've hit agbeko with a chair and he would've warned agbeko for being in his way.......
it was a complete fvck job by russell mora and not only should a suspension in order for that clown, but a rightful protest of that fight in making it a no contest should be in order as well as an immediate rematch..
and for all of you who would like to say, if it was the other way around, i wouldn't mind, you'd be WRONG, because the integrity of boxing is on the line, and I am about fairness inside the ring, and when it ever happens to a fighter that i like, that gets favoritism, I call for the same stuff, if it ever happens, usually it's the guys that I like that get the shaft....
I like mares, but not this win, this win is tainted by the biased ref.......
if mares doesn't rematch agbeko immediately or within his next two fights, I will not be fan of his and automatically think he felt he indeed needed the refs help...... thats if he doesn't rematch agbeko within his next two fights......
they fought hard and well, but the ref really fvcked it up, it's not fair that one guy gets to reap the benefits of a fight full of fouls, while the other guys gets the shidt end of the stick.........
agbeko should've fouled him right back, and maybe even crack the ref in the nutz and said " fvck it, I'll fight this guy when I don't have to fight the ref at the same time! "
you can't deny that the unfairness benefitted mares throughout this fight, which ultimately lead to him winning....... he should've had at least two points taken away from him and only one knockdown scored........
another ref ruins a night of good fight action..........
RUSSELL MORA is a worthless sack of (fill in the blank) ____________!
Stop your bias B.S., I'm a Mexican and I can say that stuff was a disgrace and Mares shouldn't even be proud of having that belt. That ref was either paid off to insure Mares won or he was flat out incompetent to ref a major fight.
From an objective view
Mares threw so many low blows I thought I was watching some noobs on Fight Night playing.
My buddy told me that the ref is notorious for being an *******. Even so he was amazed and we both agree he should be fired for that ****.
Yea bro, its not like he has done it in his past fights or appeared on a TV Show of him Low-blowing a dummy over and over again, oh wait...........
After seeing this video, I think Mares has a muscle memory problem. He was probably so proud of being on TV, that he kept throwing low blows every time he saw the clip and every time he bragged about it to his friends. Even though he may not want to bust balls, it has become automatic.
I don't mean this post to only Mexicans, but anybody in general who is trying to justify the dirty fighting that Mares did. There is a reason why fighters like Ward, Bradley, and even occasionally Hopkins get hated on. When you do things to bend the rules in your favor whether if it is intentional headbutting (not the head clash of where both Mares and Agbeko caused at the same time) or low blows you are gonna get criticized. Period. So quit trying to justify all those low blows that Mares threw and landed.
He even threw a lot of kidney punches to the back too. The kind that Rahman landed on Toney in their first fight, only worse. The dude is just a dirty fighter whether if it is blatantly deliberate or not.
idc if they were intentional or not, mares knew he was straying with his punches. i dont blame him too much tho. its the ref who should be tarred and feathered. but this fight was more than messed up for me. theres no way that win was legit.
Some of the Mares fans need to be more objective. The low blows continued for 12 rounds and conveniently they happened every time Agbeko was gaining momentum.
I'm not praising Mares, I will repeat myself, he should have had points deducted but there's a big difference in him throwing low blows (which he did) to saying he came out and PURPOSELY threw low blows to win this fight. Sorry I don't buy that. His corner even told him NOT to do it.
Yea because all Mexicans are cheaters....way to be a racist.
I am not saying Mares is a cheater or he did it on purpose but look at the low blow where the ref counted it as knockdown. Mares and Agbeko were leaning on each other, Mares got out, and landed the low blow. Now, if you look at Mares position before he threw a punch, Abner is at a punching distance where he can range and view of where to land his punch to the body.
Its a closed fight and an immediate rematch should be mandated by whatever ABC world title is on the line.
I'm saying the kid has a problem throwing his left hook right on the belt, there's no doubt about that. When he does that, sooner or later some will go low. He did vs Vic and now he did it in this fight.
I just don't think a kid with his talent and future comes out as a game plan and decides to throw punches low.
You're absolutely right... of course that's not his game plan. But at the elite level, to constantly hit opponents like that is a problem and at this point, he's coasting at a level of the sport he's not at.
If they actually put him in their with Donaire it's going to be Vargas all over again.
Take away the low blows and both fights may very well end up different. Mares was gassing midway through the fight.
the simple point here is...instead of getting points deduction, mares' game was aided by lowblows and shameful officiating. and the fight was still close.
All you're saying is he's a terrible body puncher.

I don't disagree with that, I'm just saying the kid didn't come out and throw them on purpose, that's my only point. He should have been deducted and the ref did a terrible job, I agree fully.

Whether it was intentionally or not. It had an affect on Agbeko. How Agbeko came on strong at the end who knows, The low blows affected the out come whether it was intentional or not. There could have been a 2 point swing if the low blow that caused the knockdown would have been acknowledged where it possibly could of had a a majority draw.
One this is becoming clear that Mora looks out for la raza. It is what it is.

Didn't Mares corner told him to watch it on the low blows. But he still did(intentional or not). But the blame goes on the ref, many low blows and warnings, and still no point deduction.
If it was the other way around, Agbeko making the low blows, this would be a hate thread on Agbeko.
