Was watching some of his highlights today and saw some fights where he screamed at his opponent something when he knocked him down also hitting them while on the canvas and pushing the ref to keep hitting him.
Was that a tactic he always used or is it for some specific opponent?
Want to know a bit more about him in the ring if you guys could help me out with that!
i was training at a gym in florida where he was training ppl when i was 14 he sparred me in the ring even though hes out of shape he hit me with the left hook even though it was light it still bruised my side
You should post these kind of subjects on the history section, as the posters there are more knowledgeable.
But anyway, my dad would always say that Gómez was "spaced out" or "out of it" when fighting. In other words, he acted really acted as if the fight was all that mattered in those moments. Not to say you should do the opposite, but there have been at least three occasions where the fight is being stopped or the bell rings and Gómez just keeps going at it.
I have the Gómez fight collection and I can tell you for sure that his fight with Carlos Zarate was explosive. There was a moment there where the bell rang and Gómez knocked down Zarate, the ref stepped in as if to say "get back to your corners) and Gómez tried to go BEHIND the referee to continue hitting Zarate.
I know there's another incident where Gomez's opponent is getting pummeled on the ropes, the ref steps in between them for the TKO, and Gómez is trying to push the referee out of the way to continue punching him. The cornermen from both men have to rush in and to separate their fighters as the fight is called off.
My dad's jokingly said that Gómez must've been coked up on a few occasions because he sometimes acted as if he was possessed...
ricans trying to cheat, not surprised.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug!!! LOL. jk. I Wish I lived the era but I didnt. All I can say is that I too have his fight collection and there are times i'm asking wtf for the same reasons you guys have said. Maybe there was **** talking leading up to some fights...who knows. Obviusly someone who lived the era and followed him can gives us their opinion.
