Damn dude. I have been paying attention to him the past year or so cause he is going to be the man in boxing in coming years.
Great offensive and defensive abilities and possibly the fastest hands in the sport.
With him in the mix eventually the featherweight and super featherweight divisions are going to be very fun to watch.
once again in this forum people are OVERRATING POWER and trying to make everything about Power
Russell has enough Power to hurt you and once he has you hurt he has the speed to jump on you and FINISH
but that is what makes him special IMO, the PATIENTS in the ring, he is not trying to just go out and chase Knockouts like SOME FIGHTERS, I think that hurts fighters development especially when they are young...when they don't get rounds in and you just throw Bums in front on them and they just go out and score KO's QUICKLY
With Russell, it is all about patients and Timing and fighting SMART, for him to be that type of fighter at a young age says a lot!
but some of you with all this "POWER" "He Doesn't Have Power", Russell has more then enough Power, what he doesn't have is ONE-Dimensional Power, he doesn't ONLY DEPEND ON POWER and he uses his power punches WISELY and ACCURATELY! Just because a guy doesn't go out and get a bunch of 1st Round KO's does that mean he lacks "Power?" 10 out of 17 of his wins was by KO...not sure what more do people want, of course against Lower Level Competition but again he is a guy working his way up the Ranks
it's actually better than the main event itself
this kid had a great potential
a southpaw with slick style who can mixed offense & defense with great handspeed?
im actually sold already
Yes age matters in this discussion imo. Gamboa has a case for being a Top 10 P4Pounder and Gamboa is almost 30.
Golden Boy will move him accordingly when they sign him. I fully expect him to have a legit scrap some time next year on HBO. Rios, Canelo, Garcia and Ortiz all have promotional contracts.
How his chin is and whats between his ears is highly important I agree on hoping hes not another Zab but a young guy with this much poise and smarts, not to mention the simple fact that hes not a head hunter and believes in body punching unlike alot of guys his age has me wondering if hes another Meldrick or Mayweather.
Time will tell. Fingers crossed.
Well point, time will tell. You're right on all accounts.
Bro, are we really bringing age into this? Him and Gamboa are only 3 fights apart as pros and simular amateur experience. I see where you are going with this.. but young guys are 'in' right now. Ortiz is young, Rios is young, Canelo is young, and Miguel Garcia is in teh same division and is only 23 himself and is in line for a fight with one of the big guys.
It's about that time he step up and we put all those skills he has to the test. We know the talent and skill is there, but we need to make sure he isn't another Judah is all lol.
And as far as carrying the guy.. I just think he lacks that killer instinct honestly. I see a lot of Chad Dawson in his mind set.

Not really fair to compare the 22 year old kid to Gamboa.
Its like comparing Frankie Gomez to Timothy Bradley.
By the time Russell is lined up or ready to actually fight a guy of Gamboas calibre. Yuriorkis will be a Junior WW.
I dont get why people are wondering where he stands aginst the elites at this stage. At this point he doesnt stand with the elites. Hes a prospect. A insanely skilled, very green prospect.
Imo I thought he was carrying that guy last night. He couldve turned that kid lights out in the first round if he wanted to. But a guy his age and his skillset blwoing guys out in one round doesnt do much, he needs rounds.

He threw a combination with speed and power that I have never seen before. That was insane.
Hes the fastest fighter in boxing imo. I saw a combo last night that had me standing up in awe. He was on some Meldrick Taylor shyt.
This kid's handspeed is amazing...
You guys said it best. Unbelievable.
You're missing the point. He's all flash. He hasn't even fought an opponent with a real pulse yet and fragile guys are making it pretty damn late in the fight with him. That poses a question to where he'd stand against the elites. Guys with pulses and punch resistance. Does he have the power to remain 'effective'?
i repeat.. in his division is gamboa. Just as Flashy, just as fast, and 20x the power, for starters. Featherweight is no walk in the park right now. Right now you aren't going anywhere in that division without a set of guns, and Gary isn't an outside fighter.. so he's going to need some.

The speed, the smarts, the body punching, the poise. Hes a REAL problem. He quite frankly looked amazing last night.
He lets off that flurry in every fight.
His common opponent to Rigon though, was stopped by rigon within 40 seconds of the first round by a body shot. Gary landed MULTIPLE body shots against the same opponent to no avail. IMO it says something about his power.. it isn't all that great.
The dudes pretty and lets off flashy combos. He's poise and has great shot selection.. but I'm wondering how much of him is all flash, where does he stand against the best in his division.
For me, so far.. Gamboa and Garcia are the cream de la crop of featherweight.
yeah, it is too early to tell. But he's an exciting character, speed, accuracy, offense, defense, and just love how this dude doesn't head hunt like a lot of other young cats, he digs to the body and he's engaging too - for as much as that means at this stage of his career.
Russell vs Adolfo Landeros
Guillermo vs Adolfo Landeros
very good KO at the end of this. I liked how he held his glove to the side of his face like Floyd and he's a Southpaw on top of it. Thats a tough combination to beat
Intollicable so the kid doesnt hit as hard as Rigo.
I mean seriosuly?
Thats it?
The dude is what 22,23 and Ib een saying for a while he needs to step up because he had the skills to do so.
I wont knock a guy because hes flashy. Hes not just flashy, hes effective.

Very good point. You cant truly judge someone based on their opposition on their way up.
With Russell's style if his power doesn't have an impact at the elite level he could fall short to guys like Gamboa or Juanma.
Its interesting though I love being able to observe the rise of a big prospect.
Style wise though, he's going to bring a LOT to the table. At the very least he will be able to entertain the fans which is what boxing is dying for right now. I've seen a few of his earliar bouts and he's been able to sustain good speed and showmanship throughout the course of a fight. I don't know much about featherweight so don't have a clue as to who the gatekeepers of teh division are so I've no idea who it is he'd have to fight for us to know where he stands.
But with Juanma, Gamboa, Solido, and John all staring at each other, I'd assume him and Garcia are destined to cross paths at some point and time, if garcia doesn't get the push he's looking for.
Intollicable so the kid doesnt hit as hard as Rigo. Power isnt the end all be all in boxing. As we saw last night speed kills.
The dude is what 22,23 and I been saying for a while he needs to step up because he had the skills to do so. Im very anxious to see him in there with top comp.

Hes not throwing them punches to look cute hes throwing punches with intent behind them. I also saw some very god body punching from him.

Ones all flash.. the other is an absolute destroyer.
In his division, though.. there's gamboa or mixes flash with.."destroyerism" (new word!). It's the killer instinct Gary seems to lack that will decide where he goes in the sport. I don't see it at all in him.. he just wants to look cute.
