I will see about that book, yea the Roman's are a tribe from what is now called Romania/Moldova. I wonder if anyone ever did a lineage/dna trace on them to see who's DNA they carry and when exactly did they split living with society and become a "cult" per se. What was the turning point to where they decided to live like this? Was there a major natural disaster? Plague? Diseases? They are interesting people, they remind me of Indian's somehow, just looking at their face. Gonna see if I can find their lineage to see how they progressed and from where. They are not from Romania, they originated from India, and the word "Romani" is simply derived from the fact that in their language the word "rom" means "man". They migrated to almost every country in Europe from India in the 11th century. Their lifestyle originated from the fact that they migrated to Europe to escape persecution and from the fact that they have also been persecuted in every European country in which they have settled. And yes, their DNA has been tested and confirms their Indian origins, as do their language and their music, which both have strong Indian influences. The Bowld Martcheen swaggered into the ring, and was carried out stiff, about 4 minutes after, and we never heard another word from him. heard he went back to Spiddal. By the way, I agree with you, I think Fury feels that if he talks like Haye, he can make some money and being a tinker,he uses 4 letter words to say the same things. There were a couple of good books about Gypsy life written by a mid 19th cent writer called George Borrow, which I have somewhere. They were "Romany Rye" and "Lavengro". "Rye" meant "nice young man". Even read them in school. Some thought they originated in Egypt, hence "Gypsies". No one really knows where they come from, they had/have their own language and hated Catholics, particularly priests. I read these books long ago so I could be wrong, but they were very famous, and made Borrow's reputation as a major writer. Gypsies are in most major countries, and keep in touch with each other. I often used to see adverts in the Sunday papers, for racing forecasts and fortune telling by "Gypsy Petulengro" whom I'm sure some older posters will recollect. Generally "diddling" the public, which was, everyone except themselves. Tinkers (travellers) were/are on a much lower level in Ireland than in England, and led a wretched life. But it was a huge task to break them of it, and I don't even know how successful that has been.. We used to say that England was 50 years behind the US and Ireland (although right next door) was 100 years behind England. I did enjoy the word 'gaol'. Damning you to eternal anonymity sounds pretty positive. To have your anonymity outlast you and live on for all eternity is quite something. Well, we all have our "buzz words".....

Didnt realize there were Irish Gypsies too a recently funny documentary was the "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". they live 20 people in 1 house and have rubbish everywhere but spend huge money on a dress? If you actually gave them some food, say, like bread and cheese, they could be seen to throw it away as they left the front door. I SAW it myself. What they were after was the "easy" thing, a little money instead of the trouble of going to prepare food. This money went on BOOZE. There were certain places, a bulge off the roadside, a little crossroads, and other places where they ALWAYs camped, with tents and little caravans, an occasional old car, something like gypsy encampments, full of smell, dirt and worse. One was about 150 yards away around the corner from my late brother's upscale home in Templeogue, and the neighbourhood spent years trying to get rid of them, without success. They'd turn their ponies and goats loose to wander around the neighbourhood ruining the gardens etc. The police meant nothing to them. The governments had failures for many years, they gave them council house, and they kept them full of rubbish, they kept coal and wood in the baths, etc and lived in the front or back garden. They would stink out a whole neighbourhood. It took many years to civilize them.
