In 135 years of boxing the lineal Championship has only been broken 3 times. 1. In 1928 Gene Tunney retired as champion at age 32. Broke a 52 year lineage 2. In 1956, Marciano retired as champion at age 32. Broke a 26 year lineage. 3. In 2004, Lennox Lewis retired as champion at age 38. Broke a 45 year lineage. So the question is: After Lennox, who was the next true World Champion, and when did his reign start?

chagaev was number 3 when wlad fought him right, and Vitali was #2. IIRC the ring made an exception because 1 and 2 were borthers and there was no way they would ever fight.

True, and the fighter can vacate when they move up in weight. Cliff Rold's lineal champs is in line with the Ring now in all weight classes. For sometime, he considered Zsolt Erdei as the lineal champ while the Ring had Joe Calzaghe as the lineal champ at light heavyweight. Erdei was the lineal champ. Whether that meant anything or not is debatable, but the state of fact was what it was. When he vacated the WBO and moved up, that lineage had to be considered broken because that was his only tangible link and, at the time, there was no indication of an imminent return to Light Heavy. As to Wlad, when he beat Chagaev, that meant a win over the next best available fighter and a win over every reigning beltholder not named Vitali (Chagaev was WBA titlist right up to the Wlad fight even if that was not a unification bout). Vitali won his current belt off someone who Wlad beat to get to his IBF shot so, inherently, Vitali's belt is paper. Wlad is THE Heavyweight champ. everyone else is just paying a sanctioning fee for an honorarium.

Wlad is the lineal heavyweight champion. Wlad not only holds the ring magazine title ( which normally represents the lineal champ in the specific division) but he also holds every major title besides the WBC title.
