Cotto can't beat this guy man. He's on the tall side of 6'2, Cotto is barely 5'7. He's more like a Middleweight, Cotto is really a WW.
Lara and Quintana both have long reaches so them being 5'9 wasn't a big deal. Cotto has a short ass reach to go along with being short. As you guys see Williams is tough as hell, he can take a punch and he keeps the pressure up no matter what. Lara, Martinez and Quintana all beat himt he same way. From a distance, pot shotting. Cotto needs space to operate, he needs to move forward most of the time. Williams simply won't allow it.
It's just a bad style match because Cotto would beat Lara. And Molina for that matter.
PW still beats him. Nothing changed between Friday and Monday. PW just stuck to the story of his career and looked bad against a slick southpaw. Last time I checked Cotto still isn't slick or a southpaw.
Paul Williams needs to take some time off and decide if he really wants to continue fighting because if he does he will need a new trainer... He's needs to become more versatile and learn how to use his size better.... I would really like to see what Emanuel Steward can do with him!!!
Williams is tall but he fights like he is 5'8. Cotto is too good on offense and even at 154 he has more power than Williams who is a pitty pat fighter. Cotto's jab and left hook to the body and chin would land at will. Paul's face would be a bloody mess by the 8th round.
Cotto wins by KO in the 10th.
I don't see it happening b/c Manny Steward is Cotto's chief second now. Steward has made a living out of these tall fighters that have a pitcher's advantage sitting on top of a raised mound...latest pupil being Chad Dawson. Even though the blueprint has been set by Quintana/Martinez/Lara, I don't see Cotto being as effective with Williams. Manny S. knows this as the Margo, Bundradge or JCC Jr. fights seem to be a better risk/reward scenario for Cotto, the latter of which has been laboring punches in his last two fights with Yuri & Ricardo....just not fluid anymore at 54 due to Cheato and Pac's beating at 47 & 45 respectively.
this is an outstanding fight that I REALLY hope happens.
for some reason I dont see it happening however, and Williams isnt one to duck top competition.
real fight
golden boy been making good fights lately top rank is closed doors...therefore this fight a never happen....bob arum is really killin boxing i would luv to see it as a fan
Plain and simple if this would have always been such an easy fight for Cotto he'd have made it years ago. Truth is PW is an easy fight for no one. I don't think Cotto could win because he doesn't have the power to stop Williams from coming forward and Cotto is just as easy to hit as Williams is.
Cotto could knock him out.
Depends on what is left of Williams.
this
williams has never been hard to hit with clean counterpunches
and cotto is a very good offensive fighter
if williams has what it takes to come back from a horrible knockout (which 95% of fighters do not) he's got a decent chance of outworking cotto for a decision
i've heard rumors that the williams camp and goosen tutor have expressed that williams likely only has two or three fights remaining before he retires
they weren't saying that before he was knocked out
things have changed in williams life and boxing career.
if you want a source david duenez said it on leave it in the ring radio
and it was corroborated by gabe montoya of maxboxing
in their primes it would have been a good fight
at 147, though, williams really wasn't much of a puncher and really didn't turn the heat up like he did at 154 and 160, he just threw a zillion punches
at 154 i'd pick williams to get the decision because he is a naturally larger man
but prime for prime at 147 i'd pick cotto via knockout
quintana, verno phillips, martinez, wright, cintron, all tagged williams with flush combiations and hard punches
none of those guys are great offensive fighters on the level of miguel cotto
martinez is better than the rest of the lot, and is developing into a serious puncher, so we'll give credit where it's due there as well.
Wouldnt mind at all, Both are at the same point in boxing, Physically and mentally weaken by past fights. But i dont see how Arum would do this fight, They practically had to force him to allow Margarito to defend against his then Mandatory in Williams.
Firstly, it depends on the Williams that shows up (and maybe even the Cotto that shows up), but I would love to see this fight nonetheless. Stylistically, it more so appears that Cotto would lose, unless he fights a nearly perfect fight, never gets caught up in exchanges and just boxes. Again, it's not impossible, but we can predetermine a Cotto loss on paper merely from watching the Margarito fight, who Williams resembles in many ways....but this is still boxing and this sport is often less predetermined than it appears - I would LOVE this fight.
It depends on how PW bounces back for the KO! PW(if he bounces back) would give Cotto a lot of problems, PW is fast an has a good chin, Cotto doesnt fair well against pressure fighters nor is really good at fighting backing up, I think PW wins on score cards, or by stoppage. Too much of a work rate for Cotto, I dont think Cotto is that well conditioned to outpoint PW.
Would love to see this fight, i'd pay. I think if Williams has still got it (we'll see this weekend) Williams will be to much for Cotto, but I predict a hell of a war
