I'm with Bostonguy, in that, I'm not ready to write Pavlik off just yet.
That said, I absolutely HATE the Bute fight for him. It's too much, too soon. And Pavlik is always going to struggle with boxers with good movement.
I'm not ready to write off Kelly Pavlik just yet. Just a few years ago he was ruling the mw division after beating top ranked contender (at the time) Edison Miranda and JT (x2) in exciting fashion. His reign as mw champion was disappointing because of lack of quality opponents and his troubles outside the ring.
Give Pavlik a couple fights to get back into his groove, he's still a young fighter, he's never been KO'd and his not taken a tremendous amount of punishment in his career. Who knows, maybe his hiatus away from the sport will ultimately prove to help him...
I can't see him beating the best at MW or SMW, I think his time has gone.
Right now he still has his name and that should get him a couple of decent pay checks before he retires. Bute will beat him.
IMO he has a chance against Bute only because Bute is used to fight bum after bum, not because Pavlik is a great boxer. I think he would lose against Ward, Froch, Kessler, Johnson. I would not even mention Dirrell because the guy is not fighting, even though he has his comeback in August, but until I see him in the ring he's not an active fighter.
About other SMW he could do it, but IMO he doesn't has what's necessary to be the best in the division.
He can be a good win for a fighter who has more of a future as an elite in the sport.
ahhh...he should fight quillin. i think he's gunning for bute though. he's fighting a southpaw next month in his tune-up
