I was very high on williams early in his career. Even with his first loss to Carlos.I think around that time, he should gotten a real seasoned trainer to help him mold his such tall frame and his crazy work rate. Ever since the redemption to carlos, he was on his way down. Never imposed his reach or height, relied too much on slapping punches and rrelying on a granite chin. It cost him. He thought fighting life and death with an unrepared martinez was goingto win him the rematch.
Well I wanted Paul and saw him being a champion in 147, 154, 160 and maybe even 168. His frame can carry 175+ easy imo. But he was so set on fighting smaller fighers for a eady route imo. If he could actually developed better footwork and a lethal jab with his work rateand box smarter, I can bet you Williams would gave hell up to 175. I promise you that. But when youra chinfirst, workrate and think you not going to get countered, you lose and its too late for Williams. His prime took a hit in the first Martinez fight and taken awayin therematch.
Anyway, what were your hopes for Williams? He could've done and been doing a lot. Trainers makeor break a fighters great career imo
Not sure what could've been is suppose to signify other than 1st Quintana fight who he destroyed in 1, he beat everybody he was put in front of nobody at WW wanted anything to do with him Margacheato was a pretty good W at the time i'd say
Kelly didn't show any interest in getting in the ring with him pulled out twice.
So he went to the next best fighter out there Serg showed his true merit and won 1 and lost 1
He ended up being exactly what he was supposed to be a very good fighter with a solid resume and an exiting watch don't know what else he could've done?
Could he of adjusted the pressure volume punching reckless method he fought with to a more controlled taller longer mans fight maybe but that wasn't his mentality and it was evident early on in his career.
Very interested in seeing how he does or doesn't bounce back we'll have to wait and see.
Never really liked him, from his goofy arrogant attitude, to his excessive use of "nam sayin'" and his style for his height was always dumb to me.
He made it this far on his workrate, now he's got nothin to rely on
Paul Williams arrogant? I don't see that one... I've met him 5 times (I live in the same city where he is from) and he is the most humble, coolest guy you'd ever meet..
Anyway, I thought and still think that Paul will give everyone at 154 and 160 lbs real trouble. A KO loss really isn't a big deal as people make it out to be; if anything, a little caution will serve Paul well. His workrate is the best in boxing, along with his stamina. He is far from shot and I think he can make alot of moves and win belts before he decides to hang 'em up..
And really, too many people hyped him to be Tommy Hearns because he is tall. I'll never forget the first fight I saw him in. His height was amazing, reach incredible, speed/movement pretty good. Then I saw him eat a left hook out of no-where and I knew that his chin was his real defense.
He is no Hearns. Its easy to try and pattern Williams after Hearns because of height. I dont use height, I study hydration weights. Ive heard a rule of thumb that your hydrate weight is your walkaround weight. If that's true, Paul Williams is about 165 lbs, on average, walking. Essentially he is a Middleweight, albeit a little on the light side. Paul will likely not go to 168lbs and he sure as **** will NEVER go to 175lbs+, those guys routinely hydrate to Light-Cruiserweights (190 lbs).
Paul will more than likely stay between 154-160 lbs and win a couple titles on the way. Barring something catastrophic, I believe he will have a pretty good career from here on out. He's not the most technical, but on a given day, he'd tax most fighters.
Anybody can get caught... it's boxing, **** happens.
Lets see how he does vs Lara before we write him off.
He went toe to toe, in an all out war with the MW champion Martinez in the first fight... you can't suck at make that happen.
Williams should has stayed in one weight and made his mark. He and his management did it to themselves in going up and down in weight.
He wasn't the most avoided fighter but a fighter that once he had some of a name in the sport was chasing the big paydays instead of making a point in a weight.
147 had so many stars all he had to do was to stay winning if he could in that weight and clean it out so they wouldn't be any excuses.
He still will be able to do something at 154 cause you are only as good as in your last fight in this sport
He could still accomplish many things outside of Martinez I think he can beat anyone at 160 or 154 he just needs to learn how and when to fight on the outside
Agreed but with an improved defensive guard as well.

How could anyone be surprised about Paul? Paul WIlliams is just who I'd thought he'd be. Too many people made him out to be this great fighter because floyd mayweather or manny or cotto didn't fight him. That mentality is ridiculous.
He could still accomplish many things outside of Martinez I think he can beat anyone at 160 or 154 he just needs to learn how and when to fight on the outside
The Martinez KO could be a valuable lesson he should've learned earlier in his career. He is still young, he can still be a great fighter but he needs a new trainer. One who has experience working with tall fighters with long reach.
Sometimes however getting a concussion like that can affect you outside the ring. Only he knows if hes fully recovered from that KO.
He isn't done yet. I'm going to need to see more sufficiant evidence than 1 bad KO that his career is over, of course that won't stop everyone else from writing him off I'm sure.
I was never high on Williams. Williams been needed to make some major changes to his fight game and we will see if he has in a few weeks. Williams has had the time to make those changes with break since the Martinez fight. If Williams and his trainer were to stubborn to make those changes he will always lose to top level fighters. Williams should just fought at 154. I understand wanting the big money that fighting PBF or Manny would have gotten him at 147 but those guys were never going to fight him. That has been known Williams wasn't going to get those fights so it was stupid of him and his managers for staying at 147 all that time fighting fights that were not making Williams better. I know this is a little contradicting but I don't think Williams frame with his style of fighting could take the punishment at 154 and 160 consistently to stay at those weights which is why he fought at 147.
At the end of it all I was never high on Williams but I wish the man all the best in his fights and life.
With his size and stamina he can beat anybody but he is also very one dimensional which means he can loss to lesser fighters. Its a shame he can't get good promotion he is one of the most exciting fighters and he has some charisma he should be one of the most well known fighters.
The Punisher was born in the wrong era.He would have been at home in the 80's & older. He's a throw back fighter.Yes he is tall & has a heavyweight reach. But He's skinny. He doesn''t use his height,he's a good inside fighter & he's exciting.
He was also avoided by superstar fighters, had to travel up & down in weight & got ko'd by arguably the best fighter in boxing. He's a 3 time world champion & he still has a couple big fights left in him.Just like Burner said,I'll add 147 to it too though. The Punisher beats the block between 147-154.There are a couple middleweights that might beat him.
He is underappreciated & I'll miss him when he's gone.I honestly believe most of the hate he recieved were from people who had a favorite fighter in a weightclass he campaigned in & they knew their man was afraid of him. He's gonna beat Lara & maybe get a big name in there for a blockbuster fairwell.
From the childish insults towards the guy in the post its obvious you cant look at his career without hate behind it.
He beat a Prime Margarito when no one wanted him. The same Marg Cotto got raped by.
He beat Winky Wright albeit a past it version.
He beat Quintana.
He beat Cintron. (Circus fight)
He beat Sergio Martinez.
He signed to fight Pavlik twice and Kelly pulled out both times.
Hes currently about to fight another tough challenge. Less hate, more props.
And for you to say that Alvarez would beat him just cant be taken serious. Who has Alvarez beaten? And thats froman Canelo fan bro.
Winky?..the one who was out for 2 years coming off a loss at 170 against Hopkins?
Quintana, who had no business even outworking or even beating him the first time and made him look amateurish?..
and Cintron?..enough said
and he officially "beat" Martinez the first time, but that 110-119 scorecard tainted that whole decision, and it could be argued that he lost that one, and Martinez knocked the soul out that boy the second time around..
I told you I give him credit for beating Margarito, it was a solid win, but after that his career has been lack luster..and hasn't showed that he belongs at the elite level, he's alright but nothing special is all I'm saying.
And Alvarez is a 20 year old kid who happens to be ROCKING grown ass vets of the game, no big name yet, I agree so I wouldn't mind Williams being the first one.
I'd be willing to put Saul Alvarez in there to put his lights out again..
and about his work rate, he was able to rely on it for so much, who has he really beaten?
I give him credit for outworking the slow starting Margarito, but Margarito is a very beatable guy, as long as you keep a similar or higher work rate than him, that's how Mosley, Pacquiao, and Williams beat him.
but realistically he lost against Martinez both times in MOST people's opinion, and if you wanna give him the first fight, fine, he "won" officially, but the 2nd time Martinez didn't leave it to the judges.
beyond that he really hasn't beaten anyone worth mentioning, his best attribute was his willingness to fight in 3 weight classes, but it ended when he begged for a catch weight and got put to sleep.

Reasonn I bring this topic is he's planning to retire after maybe 3 more fights. And you can't deny the martinez fight had a factor in that decision. It just disappointing, he could been making big moves , not saying he wasn't, but he could done a lot more
It was the fact he got knocked out cold. Doesnt really matter what fighter it was. ANYONE takes that same punch and they go to sleep. Period.
David Haye is about to retire. Calzaghe retired. Tito retired and came back. Hopkins retired what 3 times? Floyd retired and came back. Tarver retired. Boxers retire and come back. Sometimes they stay gone more often than not they come back.
3 fights could mean 2 more years. Which is about how long I expect him to be semi-prime. His style and the amount of flush bombs hes taken over his career plays a MAJOR role.
Im fine with his career. Could it had been better? Yes. Can it still be better? Yes.
Starting with Lara his future is still bright imo. People have bounced back from devastating KO's. Khan and Lennox Lewis instantly come to mind.
Because magically his workrate will change?
??

He has 2 losses.
He also beat both of those guys.
His career is far from over. I favor no one to beat him at JMW not named Martinez.
Canelo and angulo could take him out.
You put it perfect bra! I agree 100%. Its to late for paul! He learned the wrong way to box for his body structure. He has the heart, chin, reach, stamina and height but with the wrong style it doesnt mean ****. Boxing is a very hard sport. With out drugs in your system your career will be very short, if your a brawler who takes alot of punches, its common sense. Paul has been damage beyond repair mentally and physically. Good thread bra!
