We're all desperately hoping to see the day when the top two fighters in the game are able to set aside financial impetuousness and finally step into the ring. Yet the more I think about it, the more I fear that this fight could deal a deep blow to the sport of boxing, and push it farther into the realm of fringe sports than it is now.
If and when this fight is inked, it will be billed as a super-fight to end all super-fights, and rightfully so. Rarely do the top two competitors in the game, in or close to their primes, occupy comparable weight classes.
And so, as occurred for Mayweather-De La Hoya, the casual fans, the former fans, and even the non-fans will be drawn to this fight in the hopes of seeing a spectacular show. And there lies the problem: A Floyd Mayweather fight, though full of marvelous technical work, rarely offers the offensive fireworks and brutality that less-acquainted fans desire. If you want to see a brilliant display of the sweet science, a Mayweather fight delivers. If you want Hagler-Hearns, look elsewhere.
My prediction: Millions of people shell out the money to order Pacquiao-Mayweather... Mayweather used excellent defense to neutralize Pacquiao's attack... no knockdowns, no real shots of significance are landed... Mayweather wins by a comfortable decision... and millions of people walk away from the fight swearing that "boxing is dead".
Tell me if I'm full of it, guys.
