It's true, MMA (UFC in particular) has been taking some big hits lately. Zuffa (owner of UFC, WEC, and now Strikeforce) is being investigated for anti-trust/monopoly violations. Spike TV turned down the UFC's money demands and will no longer be featured on the channel and will move to G4 (that network having about 60 million compared to 100 million subscribers for ****e, with Direct TV not even carrying G4).
On top of that, UFC buying them up means Strikeforce is leaving SHOWTIME, meaning that boxing will be the only combat sport on the network. SHOW's parent company wants boxing back on the network (CBS) and has already featured Pacquiao and will in the future. TNT and TBS are getting in on the action.
HBO has been strong ratings-wise this year. Pac will bring in close to 3 million PPV buys on his own this year.
I think we're witnessing a Boxing Renaissance right now :boxing:
Let me make an analogy. This is why people thought MMA was the future and Boxing was going to die.
Say you have a toy you always play with and it's your favorite toy because it's a spiderman with magnets on his hands and legs. Then one christmas you get a new flashy toy and you begin to play with and starts getting your attention. After a while you get bored of it and go back to your favorite toy spiderman. While you were playing with the new flashy toy, your favorite awesome toy was still being awesome you were just being entertained by the new thing.
:lol1:
OMG if we are talking about worldwide mma/ufc is nowhere near Boxing's level in generating money.
Exactly this. It was a retarded statement made by an ignorant UFC fan whos on their bandwagon.
There are fighters that nobody has even heard of selling out arenas all over the world every week in countries like Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Australia or Ukraine as well as many others, boxing is still huge worldwide. Yet UFC's 30 events a year is going to bring in more revenue than the whole of boxing. Thats a very ignorant statement imo.
UFC PPV only brings in more money than boxing PPV per year. The problem is UFC runs solely on PPV and makes all its money there. Boxing makes only a small percentage of its yearly money on PPV alone. Boxing as a whole world wide dwarfs UFC and makes far more money than UFC.
Boxing PPV is really only one small sector: HBO. HBO is NOT boxing. HBO is just a channel, stop trying to compare UFC PPV to only HBO. Boxing is far bigger than that and literally dwarves MMA world wide in $$$ as I said.
It depends on the year of course.
mma has only been around for like 20 years idiot
and still no legendary fights to speak of. as far as promotion and as much people that watch it, its a full blown sport with enough retards watching it, idiot. at gthis point theres enough fighters to make something. so gtfo with that ****, "legends" with losses that are over half as many wins as they got lol
In MMA/UFC, they're getting the fights that are suppose to be happnening and the fights that the fans are actually calling for. Cant say the same for boxing. We get fights that are forced upon us and shoved down our throats.
You know how long people been asking for a GSP vs Silvia fight.
im more pumped for those than most of the boxing fights coming up
exactly!!!!!!!!!1
Dos Santos will win because he has superior BOXING
And GSP will win because he does the thing that makes me hate watching mma fights, hell wrestle the guy down and control him the whole fight wont submit anyone or knock em out because theyre scared to get tko'd
^^^^^THIS.
this all day.
tyson, ali, louis, robinson, leonard etc.
and mma... their "legends" are 17-10 WL record.. its just a fad
mma has only been around for like 20 years idiot

Nick Diaz vs. GSP
It's starting to regain momentum...

For boxing, this has been a really good first half for 2011, following a solid end to 2010.
For the UFC and MMA is general, the pay per view cards have not been that great. Both of GSP's fights have been somewhat one-sided and boring. The Rampage-Machida fight was dull. A number of their top fights have been anti-climatic.
However, the Ultimate Fighter on tv, the sheer number of good fighters, and - most significantly, the fact that the big fights get made are some of the reasons boxing is still lagging behind.
Boxing will always be superior in terms of combat sports, it makes the most entertaining bouts and captivating back stories. Reason you can still watch classic fights from over 30 years ago and still feel like you're watching something special. Also notice how all of the best sport movies in cinema have been about boxing (Rocky, Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby, The Fighter, ect.)
I like MMA but I always felt like people liked it because it was the "new cool thing" to like, and in that effort decided to crap on boxing. There are some very respectable MMA fans who really love the sport, and then you have the tools and energy drinking ADD crowd. I'm sorry but MMA will never have compelling figures like Duran, Ali, Tyson, De La Hoya, ect. And they will NEVER have fights that can match the passion, intensity and sheer beautiful violence of Gatti - Ward, Ali - Frazier, Hagelr - Hearns, ect.
So true...

UFC doesn't bring in more money than every promoter worldwide in a calender year in boxing.

Photomane MMA is not fading. Back your statement up. MMA is growing. UFC brings in more money than boxing and wwe combined. Do your homework. I love boxing first but MMA is not going anywhere.

I remember reading an article that the crossover between these 2 sports fan base is less than 10%. Basically boxing fans dont watch mma (like myself I never watch that stuff) and mma fans dont really watch boxing.
im a huge fan of combat sports in general, but yah the next 6 months of boxing is getting me all giddy, MMAs slowed down, but it will pick up again..both are mutually exclusive and in no way are competing...
