Pavlik looked terrible his last fight against the unheard Lopez. He was getting hit far to much and seemed extremly slow. Bute would pick him apart, to quick, to accurate, and to prime for Kelly.
This is a pure style nightmare for Pavlik imo. A slick southpaw with hand speed who can pop.
I dout he beats Bute in his prime, but now he's expected to past prime?
Kelly never really deals with speed well, even when in his prime. Can't belive Arum is letting Pavlik take this fight.
Pavlik needs to target fights with the likes of Arthur Abraham, Glen Johnson, Librado Andrade, Sakio Bika.
NOT Lucian Bute!
w and the Bute on the other hand certianly hits harder than Hopkins, Martinez & Taylor.
Based on what? He's never fought anyone that was considered to have a great chin, be in really good condition, etc, etc.
Martinez, Pavlik both put guys down who had never, ever been KOd in their careers. And not just tomato cans, but guys ranked at very, very high levels. Champions.
Lol at "pavlik was ahead before the cut"... So as soon as he gets cut he falls apart? Are you calling him a poosie?
Pavlik is handcuffed by loew, thats just how it is.
Did you watch the fight?
When the cut opened up, it was all over. Including the fact that where it was, the blood was going into his eye. It was impossible for him to see.
Pavlik was ahead on the score cards after the 7th. *PERIOD* It was a 10-8 round when Sergio got knocked down.
Geezus....this forum.......
Pavlik has 37 wins...32 by KO.
His last KO was *3 fights ago* .....acting like he's never knocked a guy out .
Jermaine Taylor had never even been close to being KOd. Zurtuchi, which is one of the most brutal power KOs I've ever seen, had never been KOd.
Bute was in a world of trouble (in a fight he should have lost) against Adrade. Good hometown help in that fight. Quit acting like this guy is invincible, he's been hurt, could be hurt again.
Has Pavlik ever even been on the canvas? I've never seen him hurt in any fight. Not against Sergio, not against Hopkins, not against Taylor. Yet he's gonna get KOd?
Three fights ago meaning in 2009 against Miguel Espino? Who?
So Pavlik hits as hard as Andrade now?
i agree bute will kill pavlik but what other options does he have? pavlik isnt a star anymore, hes fading badly and there arent that many fights out there for him. they want no part of williams or abraham, most of the other top guys are out of the equation.. he should be happy there is a big name fight out there for him to begin with. another duck move would kill his career too.
Simple reasons, really.
1. Pavlik's time is almost up. Why not let Arum and Pavlik make as much money as possible before someone who brings less to the table sends Pavlik off into the sunset? In truth, I think both Pavlik AND Arum have an understanding of this.
2. Bute has been hit and didn't look GREAT in his last fight either. Fine performance, but nothing special. Bute was hittable. Pavlik can hit. There's always that chance.
3. Pavlik was BARELY getting a name for himself when he was beaten by Hopkins. Then, when Martinez beat him, it all but erupted his star. Now, he needs to either be shot right back into the scene with a big win or essentially fade out completely and seem like a washed-up has-been. Whether or he's already there is to be seen, I suppose.
Keep in mind Mcgee was a southpaw and the first one Bute fought in 5 years.
If Pavlik shakes of the rust I honestly believe he has a good chance against Bute........
Bute has terrible stamina and can be hurt.....
:)
The majority thought this about Victor Ortiz against Berto...
Bute is a good boxer, but Pavlik winning isn't an impossiblity. Bute was stopped by Andrade (forget about the long count, Bute couldn't stand without the ropes) just through pressure (forcing him to fight at a faster pace than he wanted to and withstanding his shots) and the occasional body shot, so he's not indestructible.
Bute went to Romania in the middle of his camp to go to his sisters wedding and contracted food poisoning, hence his conditioning. Name any other fight where he's showed poor stamina?

you summed this up perfectly plus i think Bute has never seen a Kelly Pavlik quality fighter or a guy with Pavlik's size/style really. If Pavlik has the fire back and has a good camp I see him whipping Bute's ass. remember Bute doesn't exactly possess the best chin an Pavlik is a heavy handed guy even at 168.
Bika, Zuniga (who hurt Pavlik), Berrio, Miranda all are equal if not bigger hitters than Pavlik and Bute had no problem with their power. Pavlik's power above MW doesn't seem anything special.

because arum knows better than any of us and feels that dumping kelly for paydays at this point in his career is the best rout to head in terms of making money for top rank
the only good part about this fight is that bute has a tendency to throw one punch at a time, and everybody who has given pavlik trouble has thrown more than one
once you throw a punch kelly literally stops moving his feet
bute's single shots he can probably take for 12 rounds as long as he can see them
additionally, kelly fights at a rather even keel, while bute takes breaks.
still, i don't think kelly is anywhere near the beast he used to be, and most of it is and was in his head
he didn't take no for an answer in his prime
he had confidence in his power and his chin, which is the only way you can win fighting the way he did and having his limits
i think i might be giving kelly a bit too much credit because i've got a soft spot for the guy
but i'm pretty confident he'll make it to the final bell and maybe win 2 or 3 rounds
easy bute UD with me hoping kelly lands the right hand and
"Doubles and TRipples that fvckin jab!"

Bute is a difficult style matchup and fighter for Pavlik, but if Pavlik can withstand Bute's power, get his offense going, and show some good defense, he can give Bute some problems.
It doesn't hurt that Bute gets Pavlik his biggest paycheck too.
Sergio got outboxed? at no point did he outbox Martinez yer he won a few rounds when Martinez took his foot of the pedal, Pavlik is one dimensional and not as heavy handed as he's made out to be.
Yes.
Kelly used his height, long reach, and was able to start timing him and keeping him on the outside so he couldn't use his quick combinations on the inside. He was also able to pick up a lot of Sergio's punches and see them coming. Effectively outboxing him.
A few rounds? Every objective scorecard had Pavlik ahead the round his cut opened up all the way late in the fight. After round 7, who can possibly have Sergio up? It was a 10 to 8 round in Pavlik's favor.
His (Pavlik) one mistake was he was looking for power punches instead of simply keeping his work rate up and his jab out there.
Pavlik is overcoming a lot of things. He's had injuries that have set him back, his alcohol problem, and oh yeah, he almost *died* a little over a year ago from an allergic reaction. I'll never be down on Kelly, he always puts in the work and battles to get back.
Just because Bute fights with his hands down doesn't mean he's slick. The sad thing is Pavlik would be the best fighter Bute's ever fought.
He did pretty well against Martinez, Pavlik may not be the same guy but I'm not counting him out.
You're right. Gotta watch that fight again. And he was pretty hurt in the Taylor fight. However, he's never been KOd. To me it's nonsense to say Bute will just do it given the guys Pavlik has been in with.
I re-watched the first Jermain Taylor fight.
And although he went down from an accumulation of punches, Pavlik was up right away and his legs were pretty much under him. He tied up for a bit, but towards the later part of the round his movement is good and his legs are good.
And if he was hurt, his recovery ability was pretty good, because he was fine the very next round. Pavlik is a tough customer, I still don't see anyone KOing him easily.
People on this forum kill me.
I remember back when Pavlik was coming up and then De-throned Jermaine Taylor. This place, Boxingscene....*LOVED* Pavlik.
Hard worker, Journeyman really, from a blue collar town, throwback, and Great White Hope.
I trust Atlas technical commentary probably more than any other analyst. If you've ever seen his ESPN prefight, he shows the keys to technical boxing for the fighters before the matches. And it's excellent.
The other thing is the love affair with Sergio has left a "re-written" history on this forum. Seriously, people here are as bad the people trying to "re-write" Bush W legacy......
*Pavlik was winning the fight against Sergio late until his cut completely opened up*. Period. If people here don't see that, they are blind. (Besides the fact that it was on all the scores that way)
People love to talk about how slow Pavlik looked in that fight, etc, etc. What they failed to see was while Sergio won the opening rounds, Sergio got outboxed for about 5 rounds after that until the cut opened up late.
Pavlik adapted to Sergio, kept him on the outside, in his reach, and controlled the fight.
The guy is 29 years old. If Sergio is doing this well at 36, there's no reason to count someone out if they can get it going well.

When Pavlik was an up and comer, he was the guy given the hard road. It worked for him. Now that he is once again trying to re-establish himself, he is once again given the hard road.
It is probably the way Pavlik wants it. Pavlik always seemed to perform better when he was the underdog. Perhaps that is what he needs. Which ever way this goes, it seems to be his way of doing things. Whether you like him or not you have to respect that in a fighter.
Agree with some of your points but yes he was on the canvas twice, once in the first Taylor fight and badly hurt. Also in a fight before that against Zuniga.
You're right. Gotta watch that fight again. And he was pretty hurt in the Taylor fight. However, he's never been KOd. To me it's nonsense to say Bute will just do it given the guys Pavlik has been in with.

Bute is a 1 trick pony.. unfortunately Pavlik only throws jabs and crosses, which means bute's 1 trick (the counter uppercut) will find it's mark. How pavlik takes it.. an dhow many he can take will tell the story.
Lucky for Pavlik, unlike kessler, doesn't fall into his punches. He also likes to keep guys on the end of his punches and has a longer reach than bute - which means he'll be harder to counter on at least.
He wins easy IMO if he refrains from being Uppercutted, which is easier said than done. People are sleeping on kelly
