Thats a bad move.
What a waste. He will continue to draw less then 2k fans for his fights.
The dude is SPECIAL, he deserves a real promoter. But he made his bed.
Right, this guy deserves to be a star like Pac, and known by the general boxing audience and not just appreciated by the real boxing fans.
Case in point, I was at the Chavez Jr. fight and in the middle rounds during the main event the showed Sergio on the main screens and the crowd did not react to him. They just did not know who he was, no reaction was so ever. Some of the people near me even thought he was a soccer player. Sad.
I'm not saying Lou is a bad promoter or has done a bad job with Sergio, I just believe Lou can not get Sergio to the level of stardom of say De la Hoya, Pacman...etc.
He's taking one really bad fight as a tune up after five grueling fights that made him #2 p4p and suddenly Dibella is he worst promoter in the world? What the hell is wrong with you people?
Personally, I'm glad the contract is for at least 6 fights. After the Williams fight, Martinez said he only had 2-3 fights in him left so this is great news. Hopefully HBO will be more willing to make Martinez the face of the network by giving him more fights.
Hes a loyal fighter.
He won't jump ship.
It admirable.
Lou has done a hell of a job so far.
But they have hit a rough spot.
He'll get big fights.
The problem with those bashing Martinez is they don't realize which fights made De La Hoya, Mayweather, and Pacquiao go to that next level of stardom. This is what Martinez is being denied.
IMO, The Julio Cesar Chavez fight really took De La Hoya to that next level.
One could argue it all started with the Gatti fight for Mayweather, which was his first PPV which was a success also, and the way he dismantled Gatti. But of course, I will have to go with the De La Hoya fight catapulted Mayweather's career.
Then you got Pacquiao also who was popular but the De La Hoya fight really got him up to that mainstream level.
Martinez is being denied these fights that would make him more famous. While some people are goign along with the whole "Dibella needs to build him up and stop waiting for some one to help him"...Yeah, because Pacquiao didn't get help from some one outside of Top Rank, Oscar De La Hoya. Without the DLH win, Pacquiao wouldn't have been where he's at right now, same with Mayweather, same with DLH with his wins over Chavez.
well, i think this won't get him anywhere career wise.
would have been ideal if he signed with gbp or tp, then he'd get the fight he deserves. it is what it is
Agreed.
This is very disappointing.
Out of all the promoters I always think Lou looks the most honest one, seems like a real stand up guy. Really done alot for Sergio. Good to see him being loyal.
fighters don't need good guys. they need good promoters who can give them good match ups and sell their fighters.

i hope so. time's running out
Cintron, Williams twice, MW Kingpin Kelly Pavlik, undefeated Dzinzuruk.
I thought Dibella did a great job with Martinez no matter what Bob Arum and the Boxingscene Top Rank minions say.
He may not ever be on the star level of DLH, Mayweather or Pacquiao, but he will be known for fighting the best in their prime and maybe some day in one of those 6 fights he will be rewarded with a big money fight.
