"One thing you can't take away from Barker is he has the courage to face the best," Martinez said. "He has the courage to face the best more than Cotto or Chavez. He has more courage than them. I am fighting an undefeated fighter. As I have always said, I am ready for anyone. Nobody else took a step forward to make this fight, but Barker did. I am very disappointed in Cotto. He has no balls to face me."

How dare he say that to Cotto who has faced the best all of hius career and givin the fans all he has? I have lost a lot of respect for Sergio.
I will b surprised if Sergio will be effective at 154 having fought at MW for so long.
Might wanna consult with Ariza as how JCCJ can pull that kind of trick.
Remember, Sergio is not young anymore so I don't see how he would be effective at 154 losing so much weight. Might be worth while for say $3-5 mil. What you guys think?
If Martinez has the balz to call out Cotto, then he must have the balz to come down to 54 and fight.
He wants the cash, then come down boy!!!
At 54 we will have war!
This **** right here is why fans hate Martinez.
He keeps calling out their favorite fighters.
I don't freaking get it. I am a huge Pacquiao fan, even after all the bullsh** he has pulled. I would LOVE to see him challenge himself with a Martinez fight at 154. I would go nuts, I don't care how bad most the world would think he gets his ass kicked, I want to see that!
To see the way some fanbases make every excuse why their favorite fighters should not fight the best challenge available, they should be embarrassed.
Its not a dead certainty
First, Cotto is a technically more sound boxer. He can connect with that jab as Sergio moves back with his hands low.
Sergio's stamina is nearly as suspect as Cotto's. I think that is a wash
Cotto can cut off the ring just as good as anyone in boxing, which is what he'll have to do
At 154, its a damn close battle. At 160, I think Martinez takes it.
What are you talking about? Please enlighten me to how you think Martinez' stamina is suspect.
sergio is nothing special he talks lots of shiet about boxers thats his specialty just like he said they where going to carry chavez jr out on an ambulance and dint even ko him he was the one almost ko the **** out in the last round plus cotto is a more technical boxer than martinez cotto cuts the ring real good has a real good jab and aint stupid enough to fight with his hands down like this clown did on saturday and almost got his ass taken out!!!
So pissed that you didn't even have time to use punctuation :lol1:
Seems like favoritism will not allow some fans to see the threat that another fighter poses.
Cotto being technical and having a good jab will make this fight competitive, but it doesn't mean he won't get hit. Cotto will get hit and the problem is, he will get caught a lot. He's gonna get caught with something he doesn't see, and he's gonna get hurt.

That and the fact that he can legitimately beat them. You'd think they'd be happy that a real challenge presented itself but instead they get pissed off about it.
I'm not even mad at Martinez calling Cotto out he's gotta keep his name steam rolling with the public. If Cotto ever decides to fight Martinez it won't be at 154, i'm sure he'll like a crack at Martinez's belt.Martinez is just too tough for Cotto at this stage of his career imo.I'll always root for him but this is a difficult fight.

Whether Martinez can or cannot beat Cotto is irrelevant. Martinez's statement is just plain stupid (and I respect Sergio)...Just call Cotto out but dont say he has no balls...its almost an oxymoron. :thumbsdow

"Sergio's stamina is suspect", last night debunked that myth.
Sergio is a fast southpaw with an 8 inch reach advantage, who has a tendency of cutting/bruising his opponents. He also likes to turn up the heat in the later rounds.
Simply put, I really don't think Cotto would win.

I agree with this. This thread is getting the usual unrealistic replies, sometimes mixed with a dislike for Cotto, that add little or nothing to a valid debate. Whenever I start reading a reply and find a "Cotto's body would lay on the floor while having wild seizures if Martinez connects a straight left" type of line I just disregard that as trolling and skip to the next logical post.
I think this fight favors Martínez, mainly because of size and awkward style but Cotto is a better boxer in a classic sense and has great timing with his jab. Sergio fights with his hands down to his waist so that gives Cotto good chances for scoring points. Unlike some here, I think Cotto has the technical skill to hang in there with Sergio. Actually, I think Cotto matches better against Sergio than he does against Pacquiao. I see this as a highly technical match instead of a firefight.

Cotto is too slow for Martinez. Martinez's style and awkwardness confuses cotto and cotto gets destroyed. When is the last time Cotto beat a real good SPEED fighter?
like i said earlier, you might all be right, but i dont think martinez vs cotto at 154 is a dead certainty for martinez to win.

Thats like saying Golovkin wouldn't beat Pavlik because of their resume, like Dirk said its irrelevant, If you look at last 5 fights there resumes aren't even in the same league.
Mayorga- Club fighter and past it
Margarito- Shot to bits, old and has one good win on his resume.
Yuri Foreman - Lucky to ever be world champion and can't punch.
Pac and May good match ups, ones he lost though.
Martinez faced Williams most feared and avoided fighter in the world at the time, twice, robbed once, changed gthe course of Williams career in the other.
Pavlik was for the middlewight championship so any arguement there is irrelevant.
Dzinzurik was unbeaten,
Barker unbeaten and Macklin was more game and in prime than Margo and Mayorga put together.
Then Saturday night beats the guy who was handed his belt with a silver spoon up his ass.
Cottos 154 resume against Martinez 160. Martinez wins and its not even close. Cottos resume at Welter and below is beastly though.
like i said earlier, you might all be right, but i dont think martinez vs cotto at 154 is a dead certainty for martinez to win.
hard to say, martinez hasnt fought anywhere near the standard of opposition that cotto has.

you might be right, im just not that sure. cotto is a fcukin good boxer.
Reach disadvantage + inability to take facial punishment = bad night for Cotto.
