Who are the future superstars of boxing, top prospects who may become stars are little known boxers that you see that may be big.
I once thought Ortiz was one and could still possibly be. Names like Brandon Rios, Nonito Donaire, Mike Jones, and Andre Ward come to mine.
The word superstar isn't just given to a fighter because he is a good fighter, Ward is with out a doubt the best at 168 but I can't see him ever becoming a true superstar.
De La Hoya, Mayweather, Pac, RJJ, are really the only superstars in the 21st century, RJJ more so in the 90's... I'd barely consider B-Hop a superstar and hell I'm a huge fan of him but lets face it, he aint a household name. The average Joe in Anytown, USA doesn't know who B-Hop is.
Superstar status is only reserved for very very few, a handful(if even that) for every 10 years. Ward would have to do something incredibly spectacular in order to become a superstar and a household name, dominating at 168 and even at 175 is not gonna be enough no matter how good he does.
Can you honestly say to me that in a few years he'll be able to sell 1mil+ PPV's and become a household name and a mainstream celebrity? That's pretty far fetched. And I support Ward myself.
Well to be honest...NONE of these up and coming fighters will go on to sell 1 Million PPV Buys because none of them have Oscar De La Hoya to fight to help get that expose that Pacquiao and Mayweather GREATLY BENEFITED FROM BY FIGHTING OSCAR!!!
So to answer your question...NO I don't see Ward or anybody after Pacquiao or Mayweather doing that, not Alvarez not any of those up and coming fighters
it is going to be extremely hard for the next generation to reach that Mayweather/Pacquiao level...VERY HARD!
Hell no I don't see Ward doing 1 million PPV Buys...BUT I do think he can be a solid draw...again IF he wins the Super 6 then we shall see what happens after that, but winning that will help him A LOT just like it would help Froch if he wins
None of those guys will be superstars alá Mayweather or Pacquiao. The only ones I think who can become a superstar on THAT level is Saul Alvarez and maybe Jose Benavidez.
Of those guys you mentioned... none will ever become household names. They might become great fighters but not superstars.
Hell Saul Alvarez is already a superstar in Mexico and he's like only 20. The fight before his last one was in some outdoor baseball stadium, he's a regular household name over there.
but unlike mexicans, nobody else in america will give two shits about the kid's hair and skin color. be real, the dude is massively popular there for all the wrong reasons. :lol1:
but to be fair, it's difficult to see any of these guys getting as big as mayweather or pacquiao unless, they somehow beat the man who beat the man (ODLH).
Ward is already developing into a Superstar, some of you just don't want to believe it because YOU PERSONALLY don't like him and/or his style so you want others to not like him lol
but Ward has a pretty good promoter in Goossen/Tutor, he has a strong network in Showtime that is clearly behind him 100%, he is very Charismatic and is very well spoken and give excellent interviews, he is a very likable guy outside of the ring...I think that is what the Super 6 Tournament was for, to basically SHOWCASE WARD and give him Exposure to help him become a bigger star and I think it is working, will he ever be a MAJOR PPV DRAW...I guess we will have to wait and see, Bute vs Ward is already considered a pretty BIG FIGHT
Gamboa should already be a bigger stars and a draw as should Nonito Donaire especially after some very impressive WINS and they are both very exciting in the ring but the Smaller Division always kind get over looked by the Casual Fans UNFORTUNATELY so I don't know just how big of a star either of them can or will be especially if they can't move up to the more POPULAR DIVISION, I think Gamboa can possibly get up to maybe 135-140
big on Frankie Gomez and Jose Benavidez of course (like both of their potential more then Alvarez and Chavez Jr. especially Benavidez!)
Kell Brook could be that guy in the Welterweight Division that people are not paying attention to RIGHT NOW but he could come up out of no where and change the landscape of that
Adrien Broner...yeah I know people hate the kid and hate how he fought against Ponce De Leon but the dude has TALENT and has pretty good charisma (a natural TRASH TALKER lol), like Mayweather, he can probably turn that HATE into a lot of MONEY and use it to help make him a DRAW but for a dude that is only 21 years old, he has A LOT OF OVERALL NATURAL BOXING SKILLS...will have to wait and see how he does against Litzua next week though
Rigondeaux has the potential to be great. He has everything in his skillset to do so, all he needs right now is to step up the competition.
except for his age of course.
I know for sure..Vasya Lomachenko will be in top 5 P4P. 2 more years till this kid shines.
from current pros I'd pick
Carl Froch
Nonito Donaire
Andre Ward
can't think of other great boxers
casuals can't understand/relate to that style of fighting.
Agreed. Ward is something else. Every fight, he is fighting differently(style). He blows my mind.
do you guys see canelo becoming a ppv attraction in the us? Out of all the fighters people have listed i see ortiz becoming a huge star he speaks spanish fluently and is well spoken in english. He also has a fan friendly style
Ortiz will have to pull an ODLH. Pretty face, nice guy, hero. To become a ppv attraction. The fact that he quit didn't help that cause and his for sure loss comming up won't help that bid either.
Canelo. I doubt he becomes a ppv attraction but i can see his fights getting sold out in CA, NV, and NY.
Great GREAT pick man.
I thought it was only me and phantom5 that thought highly of Teon.
Yeah dude, I try to support Philly boxers more than others, I think Walt and Danny, also like Teon. When I went to A.C. in march, Walt was asking how he looked that night, if that fight was televised, it would've been in the running for FOTY.
This is his last fight on HBO June 4th 2011, just the highlights
Thankx. Good looking prospect he has a nasty straight right. I want to see more of him but I like what I see in the clip.
Excellent point about Ortiz my son and a few friends no of him, and they dont watch boxing.
Most people think golden boy is cashing him out in the floyd fight but
1) he's not undefeated-another loss wouldn't hurt
2) he's fighting on ppv-most undefeated fighters out there will choose to fight floyd or pac on the big stage win or lose
3) Great fight to make him known to the casuals and make the mexicans adopt him as their new star-especially if floyd plays his villian role
Teon Kennedy? I'm only able to find a few clips of him on youtube. I guess I'll find out more about him sooner or later.
Yes you will..
Teon will be something special.
Quote me on that.
