My favorite boxer, i enjoyed his craft, wasnt always the most entertaining in the ring , wasnt all that flashy but he knew who he was and never got outside of that ....i will admit he's had some snooze fest fights but i just always liked winky because of how he carried himself and his grind , coming up it was hard winky to even get fights in the U.S. he worked his way up .
I was a big Winky Wright fan. Not the greatest, but at his best anyone from 154-160 would have a rough night with him. Shame he didn't handle the business end very well, he should have catapulted himself near the top of the sport after the Mosley and Trinidad wins.
random fan: how about Luis Santana
Larry: beat Terry Norris twice...fought Vinny Pazienza and Simon Brown..WW champ of the world...he gets in!
:lol1: :lol1:
Names >>> Everything else.
Damn near everybody will get your vote Larry. Like I said you have very low standard. Case and point, this post that you just made.
Case in point;
Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver.

Let's not forget that he beat Mosley for the Lineage at 154. A Lineage that Mosley shouldn't have even had because he should have lost to Oscar.
And Oscar, as we know, was turned down by Winky Wright.

You're counting Quartey who isn't even remotely close to one of his best wins.
Coming off a loss, last fight of his career and wasn't ranked in the Top 10.
You could argue he deserved the descion against Vargas or Taylor. But both could have easily gone either way.
Other than that, from your list we are left with a faded Tito which was a good win.
And 2 wins over Shane, which were good wins most definitely but Shane really is an average Jr Middleweight and has always looked dead average at that weight.
Really nothing to shout about.
solid points...aside beating a 'decent' JMW in Shane, all i see is the Tito win...a Tito that was coming off retirement...a draw with Jemaine? a loss to Feroz? loss to Bernard?
doesn't really scream 'HOF resume' for this fight fan
I mean, he has solid wins at 154 like; McKart X3, Coucil and Mulling but they are solid defences at best.
I wouldn't be completely suprised if he was inducted but as Jro said I woudn't vote for him.
Larry no offense, but lets be real. You have very low standard. You would vote for damn near everybody into the HOF.

If winky isnt hof caliber in your opinion than no one should take your opinion seriously, he is one of the best of his generation, way better than marquez
I'm with IronDanHamza and Mak on this one as well. I wouldn't vote for him into the HOF.
He might be better than JMM(I don't think so but whatever) but being skilled doesn't get you into the HOF. Is what you do with it. And, JMM has accomplished more so and has the better resume and is not even debatable than what Winky Wright has.

He is argubaly HOF calibur.
We have fighters like Pone Kingpetch who aren't in the HOF along with many others who are catergorically more deserving than Winky Wright who haven't and most likely will never be inducted.
I would have to disagree he is more deserving than Juan Manuel Marquez.
yup...he was a good fighter but nothing spectacular...terrible work ethics...i'd also hesitate putting him in the hall
that 'avoided fighter' crap also irritates me...there are two types of avoidance in Winky's life
1. his inability to avoid partying in Vegas every night
2. his avoidance of a boxing gym
I would absolutely hesitiate.
If you look across his resume it's pretty light. I mean his only extraordinary wins at 154 are his wins against Mosley. Which by all means are good wins but Mosley is an average Jr Middleweight.
Other than that he has solid wins during his reign but nothing remotely special.
Above that weight, pretty much the only decent win he has is his win over Tito.
I really struggle to see him in the HOF to be honest.
I'm with you on this one.
I have become less of a fan in the last 2-3 years due to this 'avoided fighter' persona that has been given to him for some strane reason.
I also don't see how he gets into the HOF.
He's a good fighter but he's not HOF calibur, IMO.

wasn't a fan...was actually rooting for Paul Williams in their fight...glad he's out of the game

Where are you getting that they wanted no part of Winky? Are you assuming this?
Wasn't he still the same spoiler when Tito fought him in his comeback? What was different? What on their mindset changed?
Timing is actually important in boxing... not just inside the ring, but outside. At that particular time, do you get more out of taking a risky fight with Wright or do you shoot for the stars with Hopkins?
And yes, compared to Wright, Hopkins was a rock star.
Anyway, Wright was always a problem, in the ring, for anybody he fought. A great fighter that's often overlooked, nice thread.
