Looking for an honest opinion.
It's one of the two or three most important things a fighter can have, and if you don't have a good chin you better have the skills to hide it. Not many fighters become truly great without one.
The strength of your chin makes the difference in a lot of fights. Just the same as lacking power. Either/or will entirely change the way a fight is fought. Chin isn't just a chin. It's a mental advantage. Do you think Margarito would have been what he was if he had to worry about taking the punches? Do you think anybody would run straight at Wlad if he had the chin of David Tua? Chin is extremely important. Fighters with bad chins are at an immediate disadvantage in a sport where one punch can end the contest no matter what you say. Put a great chin on an averagely skilled fighter then put an average chin on a greatly skilled fighter. George Foreman VS Wlad Klitschko. Who wins? Wlad will land more... George will land once. That's how that fight looks theoretically.
It's basically like asking if height is important in a basketball game where the first to 40 slam dunks automatically wins the game no matter the score.
give some credit to ortiz every body is talking about fake mayweather and pacman but wait until september and november after those dates every body is going to talking about marquez and ortiz just wait and see
HAving a chin is verrrry important, it does not win fights, but it helps you from staying in the fight. No matter how good of a fighter you are, you will get testing some time or another, and that will determine how well your chin really is.
it's your last line of defense.
all those guys you posted couldn't be among the greatest because of this single flaw.
You don't need speed. Joe Louis, Lennox Lewis and Rocky Marciano demonstrated.
You don't need KO power. Ali and Ray Leonard didn't have KO power.
Out of all the natural attributes, the chin is #1 imo
The most common attribute most ATG's have is a great chin.
Bingo. You can be a great fighter without a solid chin but IMO it is almost essential if you want to be one of the all-time greats.
I actually made a thread about it: Chin is an Underrated Attribute in Boxing
You don't need one per se.
Let's take Tommy Hearns and Terry Norris for example.
But, history tell's us it is very very very important to have a good chin.
A chin is as strong and as good as how long you protect it. If you can take a punch and you constantly get hit then you will eventually soften up that forcefield around your chin.
Eg. Vasily Jirrov.
On the other hand a glass jaw should deter you from boxing. You should let a friend or neighbor punch you to measure your odds of becoming a boxing superstar.
There's more. an average/questionable should be protected at all times (like the people you mention). Defensive boxing is highly recommended.
Don't see why people hate on guys with weak chins.
Its like hating on a guy who's not that fast or someone who dosen't hit that hard.
Guys like Juan Diaz or Clottey can't help it if they can't physically do certain things.
a lot of these guys really don't know what is considered at Weak Chin, they think because Mosely rocked Mayweather...all of a sudden Mayweather has a "WEAK CHIN" or because Gamboa was dropped a few times during some of his matches "HIS CHIN IS A LITTLE SUSPECT"...your chin cannot be considered "WEAK" when you are able to RECOVER quickly from those blows
Floyd is the exception not the rule. He's hardly an ATG top 50.
HOF and fringe top 10 HW.
Most people thought Lewis had a glass chin through his career.
RJJ had questions about his beard.
IMO it's essential because sooner or later you will get hit. You don't have to have a granite chin but you need to be able to take a punch.
Think about all the greats and it's hard to find one with a glass jaw.
Floyd Patterson is a HOF and an ATG.
Glass chin.

It changes based on how good a guy is at not getting hit hard often, if you can avoid a large amount of punishment is it is nice but not required although it would still be a weakness because no one can avoid everything.
Some guys really trade on their chin because that is the best way they can open up the other guy, for a guy like that chin is everything and once it cracks it is over with for them.
IT HELPS...It is important for a guy with no speed, athleticism and poor reflexes though, imagine someone with Froch style or Abraham style with NO CHIN?
But you can work around a WEAK CHIN...Lennox Lewis did it also!

Depends on ur defence i guess, along with other attributes.
It can be an enormas advantage for an under skilled fighter like say a Margarito, if he had no chin he wouldnt be more than a club fighter

It is a big misconception about a strong chin though, most guys can brace for a punch they see coming...BUT...IT IS THE PUNCHES YOU DON'T SEE COMING THAT DOES THE MOST DAMAGE...EXAMPLE: Paul Williams has a good chin, but because he didn't see that Left from Martinez coming he got KO'd
by the way getting knocked down or getting wobbled does not mean "YOU HAVE A WEAK CHIN", it is when you can't get up or can't recover that is when you someones Chin should be questioned
