Pretty awesome longish article by Gabriel Montoya with lots of new tidbits I hadn't heard before from Lewkowicz and Dibella.

This part is especially interesting.
“HBO had tickets that they gave to Martinez for the Zbik-Chavez fight that were in the last row of the ringside,” said DiBella. “This is a fight that barely sold tickets. He had to be moved up. I sat there and I am being criticized by Bob Arum and your cohorts that don’t have the balls to take them on, for fighting Dzinziruk when he was the only option given us by HBO. I am being criticized for the kid not fighting enough? He was supposed to fight over the summer but HBO didn’t have a date for him until October. We’ve asked for activity from HBO. He should be the hottest fighter on the network but what do they think of him? Enough to stick him in the last row of the ringside. That’s what they think of him.”
Hbo doesn't like him for 2 reasons. He isn't black and he isn't American.
They are in the business of promoting only black prospects. It's been like that for years.
Alvarez, Chavez Jr, Ortiz, Khan...all get a major push and backing from HBO, neither are Black so WTF are you talking about...OH you must have seen some other clueless idiot post that so your trying to use it also without knowing your FACTS lol
I don't get this MYTH that HBO ONLY PUSH BLACK FIGHTERS...NO...AL HAYMON is the one with the Power to get Paul Williams, Andre Berto and Mayweather on HBO anytime they want and for GOOD MONEY, it has nothing to do with HBO to be honest...Haymon is just that POWERFUL
but of course HBO is going to Push American fighters more...it is an AMERICAN COMPANY you IDIOTS why wouldn't they push their own more?
DiBella as well as Sergio Management don't have the Power or Connections to make him into a BIG PPV DRAW...and I like Sergio but lets be honest, he doesn't have the BACKING HE SHOULD especially for a guy that is considered one of the best P4P right now, they put his face on the screen during the Chavez fight and it was no reaction, to be BRUTALLY HONEST, he is not even that well knows besides among BOXING FANS
It sucks but DiBella and his Management team needs to do a better job Marketing Him! So as much as I like DiBella, what he wants is for HBO to pick up the tab for HIS FIGHTER, like when Jermaine Taylor was on Top and DiBella was his Promoter...but AGAIN Taylor was a Al Haymon Managed Fighter, it was Al Haymon pulling Power Moves for Taylor...NOT DiBella!
everyone knows HBO is the network of inactivity. Every fighter that was hot on showtime goes there & ends up fighting once a year (dawson, bradley, etc)
DiBella should be trying to get Sergio fights while he is hot....if that means going to Showtime or even ESPN, so be it, when they told him HBO would only have them in October, DiBella should've put on something on ESPN...Im sure the boxing people in ESPN would've loved to make a big deal out of a p4p entrant fighting on their network...sure, money would've sucked, but it builds his name and keeps him active........besides the only big fight in the middelweight division is the eventual winner of Chavez-Cotto.....Chavez has been too inactive the last 2 years, which is why his fight at Staples didn't really set LA on fire, Sergio is better off forgetting about them right now and hoping to land a fight with the winner down the road.
I like DiBella, but he should stop whining and do something...boxing needs for a champ like martinez to be well known
dibella don't want to go outside of hbo because the other networks would be less money.
don't know what his contract is with serg.
he probably doesn't want to take money out of his pockets just to get serg fights.

Thanks for posting this here. Seems to be a very intelligent bunch, except for one poster, commenting.
Lou actually does have plans to take Sergio on another network. He mentions it at the end in subtle terms in the part about the future of Martinez and his October 1st fight. I would not be surprised to see them try and do some sort of PPV indie of the networks or to go to Europe to attempt to unify the other belts, in effect chopping down the middleweight tree around Junior. That's what I'd do anyways. The money over there is good so why not?

That is a disgrace.
I told you people that Martinez is shook, the man wants nothing to do with Chavez. He isn't as dumb as he looks(or Montoya acts). Not only has he fled the country, hiding in Yemen, he's heading to Europe indefinitely.
On the same day Chavez announces he's not fighting Cotto, Martinez has panicked and is sneaking off into the night.
When you get your man on the phone, Montoya; you tell him to grow some balls and get his overrated, cowardly, perpetually ducking, ass down to the Staples center and take the beating he's been running from for two years like a man.
43 have tried and 43 have failed.
martinez is a glitch in hbos plans
Exactly....blame it on the idiots who run the boxing program
sergio should go to a promoter that isn't totally dependent on hbo's "charity".
GBP is actually the ones who should get part of the blame too as they have tons of dates locked up

Ya thats why they gave those gift titles to JCCJ and saul alvarez?

Its not because he ain't black, its because he's from the wrong latin country/island. Its because he ain't mexican or puerto rican.
does not necessarily mean that HBO hate him because they could not provide him with a summer fight date but instead had a october fight date and that they gave him some back seat tickets to watch chavez-zbik....
Am actually talking about what Lou diBella could or couldn't do with Martinez since HBO seem to be dragging their feet even though Martinez has been doing everything that HBO required of him..
I see what you mean, I am just really confused on why they wouldn't want to do something with Sergio who is hot right now, with a line up that is already looking nice adding another p4p fighter would only add to the networks credibility as the leader in boxing.

Late bloomer or not he's producing exciting fights right now, HBO should at very least find him something else a boxing after dark or something. If your only as good as your last fight Sergio is on fire. I could see if he showed his age or was looking bad, but it seems like right now older fighters are producing better fights.
The problem is that Sergio is destroying people and no one wants to fight him if they do not have to. The current state of boxing is to find a safe opponent and good money, as opposed to simply trying to put on the best possible bouts.
What speaks volumes is that no one wants to fight him and fans of top fighters will give there guy an excuse to not fight him, yet anyone at the top would love to have his name on there resume. Margarito fans say it as much as possible, most would agree Sergio was green and Margarito was better when they fought but if worse comes to worse rematch that or something, many want to see Sergio fight soon.
It's not an easy job to promote a fighter like Martinez, he was a late bloomer, he doesn't have the sort of boxing loving community that could also help his profile, if he was Mexican or from the PR then promoting would have been easier even at his old age, and this is why di bella is still hanging on HBO for everything to do with Martinez.

HBO is part of the problem in boxing. They pander too much to Al Haymon, which is why Williams got everything he wanted in the reamtch, challegnig for Sergio's MW title. The fact that Martinez cracked his chin open like a walnut was sweet justice.
