Who cares what these ESPN guys say anyone who has a shred of knowledge about boxing knows Mayweather-Ortiz is a good fight and probably the best available at 147 outside of Mayweather-Pacquiao
It's funny how ESPN is only the largest, oldest, and most well respected sports network in the world that has all the finest sports analysts in the world. But their opinions don't sit well with some knownothing flomo and suddenly they don't know anything about boxing.
That Figures LOL!!!!
I started watching boxing a little over 30 years ago. I get the point of learning the sport's finer points but this is their job: to know what they are talking about, who Victor Ortiz, his history not only past but most recent and it's significance. When interviewing a fighter, manager, promoter, or speaking about a fight, I always research as thoroughly as possible in the time I am given. I don't buy that a person paid to be on a professional sports TV show can play the ignorance card.
I kind of agree, but I also think it would be a pretty big waste of time for sports networks to make all of their employees that are on camera learn the ins and outs of boxing, since it is a topic that gets so little coverage, even on networks that exclusively cover sports. To be fair though, it would have been nice for idiots like Cornheiser and Rome to take the initiative to schedule a brief meeting with Dan Rafael so they could run what they were going to say by him to make sure that they weren't saying anything incorrect or outlandish.
How funny would that be if he kept calling Floyd "Pretty Girl" and then Floyd bitch-smacked him like Jim Everett :lol1:
Anyway, I'm not thrilled about the Ortiz fight either.
If I got that recorded on my DVR, it would never ever get deleted... ever.
I can't agree with you about Atlas though. I am well aware he says some stuff that comes from WAY OUT his ass, and at times can piss people off by what he says...but overall, he's very knowledgeable about the sport. And I also forgot about Brian Kenney.
Outside of Lampley, who may be my favorite person on the planet... Tessitore is my favorite boxing commentator. I think he is extremely talented, and it's only a matter of time until he gets a promotion up to one of the two premium cable networks to commentate. I wish Showtime would pick him, so they would finally have someone to bring some excitement to the fight with their commentary who's name is not Gus Johnson, as he is just generally annoying as all hell, and overreacts to every little thing that happens in the ring. Plus, I think Tessitore knows a lot more about boxing than Johnson could ever hope to. Hell, I'd say Tessitore knows more about the sport than Lampley to be totally honest.
I do love me some Brian Kenny as well. I think he's actually kind of dull when he commentates on fights, but he is brilliant in the studio, talking about significant fights that are coming up and what not.
Atlas probably does have a wealth of boxing knowledge, but I think it is more about the specifics of training. When he actually commentates a match, he does have good points, but they are very rare. Who knows, maybe he has a bunch of good things to add to the commentary, but he does seem to have a horrendous time trying to string words in the English language together to form a coherent sentence, so the majority of the time, he just pisses me off, and I have almost stopped giving him a chance. Also, he is easily the worst person who is paid to give his thoughts on boxing when it comes to predicting fights. I remember when that idiot picked Tony Thompson to beat Wladimir Klitschko. Literally the only person on the planet besides people who are so close to Thompson in his personal life that they had no other choice but to be delusional about his chances. And all of that is coming from a person who thinks Tony Thompson is quite good, and is actually probably one of the more talented heavyweights outside of the Klitschkos and Haye. Hell, I'd probably pick him over Povetkin, Dimitrenko and Chagaev to be honest.
Jim Rome and the rest of the talking heads at ESPN, save for the boxing crew, should STFU about a sport they know nothing about.
Mayweather/Ortiz is 1) a very good fight and 2) infinitely better than the crap Manny has fed us in his last two fights.
Floyd is fighting a younger, bigger, hard hitting southpaw titleholder coming off a a big win.
When is the last time Manny did any of that?
And before guys start screaming I'm a Floydiac or Manny hater, I keep my criticism of both even. They both have picked and chosen over their elite level part of their careers. But in this case, Floyd has chosen a tough fight and I don't think anyone can deny that.

I agree that those who aren't in the boxing business working for ESPN (or any other sports news corporation) should really keep quiet about boxing unless they are a hardcore fan about the sport.
It's really not even their fault, as it is more indicative of the very skewed view that the general public has about boxing. Do you remember when you started watching boxing? I started watching in 2007 when I was 19, and I remember thinking that jabs were irrelevant in scoring the round, power was the most important aspect of a boxer's characteristics, the only boxers who had any skills were the pure boxers who pot shotted and moved without trying to put any hurt on their opponents, heavyweights were the most exciting fights (that belief held by the general public is hilarious to me... most heavyweight fights suck... giant guys who gas out after a few rounds, and who don't throw very many punches to begin with), etc. The list can go on and on, and I'm sure it's not their idea to speak on such subjects, it's the people in pay grades above them, who also have no idea about the true nature of the sport.
I was pretty damn disappointed when I heard the PTI fools saying Nicklaus's achievement of winning The Masters was more impressive than Hopkins beating Pascal, mostly because their description of Pascal was something to the effect of, well he has a title, so I guess he's okay or something.
Although, I have no idea how you are okay with listening to Atlas. His voice is terrible, he's an idiot, and talks about pretty much everything except the match when he is supposed to be commentating on the Friday Night Fights fights. Plus, he is generally wrong about everything.

Big fan of Rome.
Seriously though, easy to see why anybody who knows Boxing is disappointed. Mayweather picks a fight against a guy who up till a couple months ago lacked heart and warrior spirit.
Anybody who knows what Ortiz is about will not get the Maidana fight out of their minds.
What does beating Ortiz do for Mayweather's legacy? Not much without a KO.
Yeah the fight is the best scrap available for Mayweather in terms of credibility, but it has very little significance for his career.
I think that's what Rome is disappointed in.
Manny has bodyguards in high places....you dudes look at certain things as CONSPIRACY THEORIES and sh!t so most of the time I just fall back like the kíd in school who knows the answer to the question but won't raise his hand to answer it...he'll just keep it to himself.....ppl fell for the okey doke in '01 and have been dumbed down to the point of believing ANYTHING the media says....The label "conspiracy theory" is commonly used to try to discredit criticism of the powerful in government or business.....Manny has the light...certain powerful cats has made the sport of boxing HIS....now I guess I'll be called a hater of a certain fighter for trying to explain why the media is talkin' stupid...it is what it is!!
ESPN has zero credibility when talking boxing, Brian Kenny has a little but almost everyone else on the network has no clue. Casual fans have more knowledge of the current state of boxing than the analysts at ESPN at this point.
Exactly!!! But if it's Tessatore, Atlas and Charlie Steiner (remember him)...then I'll listen. But these Idiots on PTI or Rome. Please...you may as well listen to Regis & Kelly talk about Boxing!!!

First of all $65? You are clearly a hater! I bet you were happy to pay $49.95 for Pacman vs Clottey/Margarito/Mosley you moron. Those were all-time classics huh???
Mosley and Clottey was a shiet fight. Happy???
And I am pretty sure this one will be a one sided beat down. I mean who the hell is picking Ortiz to win or even stand a chance for that matter.
Dont get me wrong Ortiz is a solid fighter "after" beating Berto but he only had 1 fight @ WW and with his lack of defense, is not even going to be a competitive fight against someone like floyd.
If you want to buy it go ahead, nobody gives a shiet.
next best fight at Welter, I mean it was clear bob had no intention to have Pac fight Floyd after mosley, just look how fast he put the Marquez trilogy together
Anyone on ESPN talking about boxing is just nonsense at this point.
Saying Hopkins' win wasn't that great because 'Pascal was a stiff who had no chance' was the last straw for me. If they start to talk boxing, I change the channel.
Exactly!!! But if it's Tessatore, Atlas and Charlie Steiner (remember him)...then I'll listen. But these Idiots on PTI or Rome. Please...you may as well listen to Regis & Kelly talk about Boxing!!!
Rome...is basically the sporting hybrid version of howard stern & rush limbaugh.
Definitely the first two names I think of for those universally respected for the accuracy and wisdom of the content on their shows.
Did Rome say the same thing about Pacquaio/Mosley; Pacquaio/Margarito; Pacquaio/Clottey? He didn't even mention these fights because he didn't care. Now that Floyd is coming back, all of a sudden, he cares about boxing. Whether Rome buys the Mayweather/Ortiz fight or not, it will still sell over 1 million PPVs, which will be about 500,000 more than the Pac/Mosley fight sold.
Rome has covered all the Pacquiao fights over the last 2 years including Clottey.
Ive heard him interview the Klitschko brothers, Joe Calzaghe, Lennox Lewis, Larry Merchant, Roach, and just a few weeks ago he said BHOP was the 2nd best interview in the History of his program. So yes, the guy knows a lot more about boxing than the average talking head.
Do people actually take Rome seriously?? I don't understand all the hype with rome..he's just a bobblehead for espn.If anyone actually thinks Floyd or manny Are scared of one another than watch Rome lol..I feel like they've been stirring the pot for a longtime..The Mosley fight should tell the story of mayweather pacman..pacman couldn't do much of anything to an old Mosley...and people still think he could handle Floyd..Floyd is 10x better than Mosley in his best days..not trying to the but that fight told the tale plain and simple.
I totally agree dude... Rome strikes me as a small guy, who got picked on a lot in school as a kid, so he moved away from everyone he knew, and started acting like an overly opinionated hardass to divert people from the obvious truth that he probably has a tiny dick.
Anyway, I understand the criticism for Floyd not fighting Manny, but I don't understand this Ortiz fight causing any more criticism than there was before. I mean, Manny is already fighting Marquez when this fight was made, and to be honest, there didn't seem to be any effort on either side to make the fight this time around. Not saying it's Top Rank's fault for not trying, considering it has been done before and they are probably frustrated as hell, but I don't understand those that picked this as the prime time to start tearing Floyd apart.
First off ive listened to rome since i was in Elem school and havent missed a show in 7 years. I'm a die hard clone. To the people saying he's just a ESPN bobblehead are plain stupid. His show has been on radio forever and he actually competes vs espn radio. Second Rome say's he likes boxing but honestly he doesn't follow it except for the big fights. If Floyd fought Sergio he would be killing it as well. Rome likes to rip people then change his mind the next day. The only thing he does for boxing is kill it and then say, Hey I love boxing. Well that and b hop interviews along with roach. People need to stop being controlled by the media. All they are, are a bunch of guys that went to broadcasting school or majored in English. I listen to rome because he's the funniest guy on earth not because of his opinions
