It don't matter if is Chavez Jr the champion Cotto goes after because by winning he is joining a very exclusive club in boxing. Only 9 people have done it and their names are in the list below.
1)Thomas Hearns
2)Sugar Ray Leonard
3)Roberto Duran
4)Pernell Whitaker
5)Oscar De La Hoya
6)Leo Gamez
7)Roy Jones Jr
8)Floyd Mayweather jr
9)Manny Pacquiao
Also becoming the first Puerto Rican to do it is big considering all the great fighters Puerto Rico has had. To be the first at something in boxing is huge.
considering how most of those names probably didn't get those belts beating anybody of note, i don't see how anyone can frown upon this.
Nice sig picture! Future champion right there!!

he also happens to be a bad style match up for cotto, nevertheless I'd expect everybody here *****ing about the legitimacy to not make anything of it if he did beat chavez.
cotto is a ****ing dwarf and chavez could have been a heavyweight 60 years ago. whether you like it or not, its a big ****ing deal.
Miguel Cotto can be remembered as a champion in 4 weight classes.
But the question will be asked, did he ever beat the CHAMPION in any of those weight classes? Was he ever the CHAMPION in any of those weight classes?
The answer will be no.
Question you should be asking yourself is who he defended them against through his career?
So yeah, it's hard putting him in a list with guys like Mayweather and Pacquiao. Mayweather who's been the Lineal/Ring champion in 3 different weight classes, and Pacquiao has been Lineal.Ring champion in 4 different weight classes, and Cotto has been Lineal/Ring Champion in....no different weight class, none, zero.
I understand your point but The fact that he had the balls to fight nearly everyone at 147 when the division was stacked (Judah, Mosley, Quintana, Margarito, Clottey, Pacquiao) and coming out of there 4-2 should get him mad respect. I do agree with you with Arum though...a fighter like Cotto should've been calling for his fights instead of letting Arum pick his fights. I think Cotto would've easily beaten hatton at 140, berto, Cintron and Williams at 147 too but he lets Arum dictate and call his shots which put hims out of that spefici picture I know you are reffering too.
Sorry if we're all split on this but its 100% legit at 160.no catchweight,no draining, just a natural 147lbr vs a guy weighing 180 fight night.so what if chavez isnt the most complete fighter, his weight will make the difference.roach will strap him on a muscle build up program and make him become more aggressive come fight night.cotto hasn't felt shots from 180lbers.julito has to worry abt being outboxed.if julito gets ko'd by a guy who has no business at super MW shame on him.
Cotto will get his props for the accomplishment and being the first Puerto Rican to do so will be great but with all these belts flying around.....I'm sure within the next 10-15 years we will have 25+ new ones into the list since all you have to do now a days is fight the weakest of the 4 champions.

He did not fight Ricky Hatton, the champion at 140. For whatever reason, I would say because of Bob Arum.
He did not fight the champion at 147, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Again, i'm going to blame Bob Arum.
He has not fought any body good enough to make him the champion at 154. In a relatively weak division, he can not even be the champion there. It's sad the last champion in this division was Winky Wright and that was years ago.
He does not dare mention fighting Sergio Martinez, the champion at 160. Again, I will blame Bob Arum for this.

I do think that Cotto being the first to achieve this is for Peurto Rico a big achievement, but you have to consider the opponent to capture a 160 belt. Chavez Jr. was pretty much just given that belt, he didn't have to fight legit competition for it so on that side of things it detracts from the achievement, similar with the 154 belt but to a lesser extent.
But I do still think it's a tough thing to accomplish, as seen from the small list of people, so Cotto will still deserve props for doing it. :boxing:
The way boxing is right now, I expect that list to go from 9 to 800 very soon.
It's looking surprisingly easy to win one of 4 belts in 4 weight classes now. You can pick which champion you want to fight, and it's usually the wackest one, and you can also fight for a vacant title against non top 10 guy in that division.
Marquez beating a champion at 140, or Pacquiao would be big though. He would be the first Mexican to win major titles in 4 weight classes, but the difference with Marquez is that he fights real champions.
