I don't think he was scared. It looked more like a conscious decision not to get too chummy with Froch, and refusing to play into any mind games. Ward shouldn't be allowed to fight the final in his hometown IMO, hes had enough fights in his hometown... in the final the stakes are much higher and too much potential biased people.
