Vanes looks as if he doesn't try to punch through the target, instead he pulls them back after contact, trading power for speed/defense. It'll hurt him against opponents who don't respect and can handle his power and be able to land clean on him at the same time. Ouma couldn't miss him with the 1 in combination after the 1-2 from the southpaw stance (the good thing for Vanes is that not many southpaws throw that combo). He's a good fighter in a weak 154, he will have a good chance to be a top 10 contender, as long as he's put against good styles for him.
Don't know about Jr., his lack of power and strength coupled with his style and lack of defense will get him in trouble soon enough.
Jr. landed some nice clean left hooks and a few pretty good combinations in there. The shovel hooks landed right inside Vanes' face guard, which made his face look as if he took more punishment. Vanes worked him over though. He did pretty much whatever he wanted.
well said bro... i agree.
we hope to see a veryyy solid Vanes on June 4 co-main event, so HBO picks him up again.
Too bad Vanes fails to impress in the ring, I'd honestly pick Chavez Jr. to beat him there.

Just saw this vid. Good work for both guys. Vanes got the better of the session but both guys got hit quite a lot. I see that JCC Jr eats a lot of uppercuts like Pacman and Khan. Is Roach ever gonna teach his fighters how to deal with uppercuts?
Obiously sparring is far different than a actual fight. Until now JCCjr has been more proven inside the ring that Vanes( which doesnt say much) and would probably be favored to win.
To say JCCjr is soft and Vanes would tear him up is just being a good Nuthugger. I like both guys and would like seeing a fight. My money is still on JCCjr
chavez doesn't have that right hand cocked for when his jab lands solidly, doesn't have it in his head to even attempt to utilize his height and his "natural" boxing body rhythm lacks head movement.
this leads to vanes being able to send shots straight down the middle of chavez's gloves and have a high number land as well as throw blind counter shots by just punching at the last place he saw chavez's head.
i noticed that 1:31 into the video. why haven't these simple things...an instinctive 1-2, a longer jab and passive head movement...been corrected/ improved by now?
he's leaning forward with his head over his knees, leaving him extremely open for uppercuts and refuses to come in behind a high guard despite getting caught regularly.
i have noticed an increase in his head movement as he's coming in which would work well for single shots but gets you tatted when you're opponent is throwing 5-6 punch combinations.
he's also starting to throw that right hand over vanes' front shoulder as well as that hook to the body which is allowing him to get heavier shots in more often.
i will say this, though, with more educated head movement and a more solid high guard, chavez stops vanes late. vanes never goes to the body. never. that's why it will be very hard for him to stop top level competition.
Junior could of knocked out Vanes in that Video and u retards would still be saying that Vanes got the better of him LOL!
you kidding me bro... Chavez Sr. pulled Vanes aside after this and said he is special, just stay focused and world champion soon for sure.
Jr. is soft, if Vanes goes at him raw he will tear that kid apart. The only drawback with Vanes is that he doesnt always take that same fight from the gym to the ring on fightnight.. but when he does, will be hell for opponents.
Vanes really put it on him, JCC seemed happy that he's giving his son the experience. Very good sparring session that was, thanks for posting it.
^^^^very entertaining....not bad at all.
Good sparring match, vanes got the best of him. Can't belive Jr. gets hit so many times and with so many clean shots. Jr. reminds me of an OLD Chavez Sr., Jr. needs to move the head or still in close and that be his style cause he doesn't have the tools his dad used to have. Any footage of Omar Chavez sparring?
After watching that video there is no chance at all that Chavez JR goes more than 7 rounds against Cotto. Dude has no defence at all and is not using his height by bending and looking the hunchback of notre dame. Chavez has no speed and no power.
Sparring is NOT a real boxing match....
IDK why people see stuff like this and think they have someone figured out. Look, I think Cotto beats Jr right now, but to say he can't go 7 rounds is ridiculous.
Chavez is a big strong kid, that has a good chin and comes forward, the type of style that isn't the best for Cotto.
Also, you tend to take many more liberties when you are wearing headgear and 16oz sparring gloves. Neither of them showed much defense in that sparring video and a real fight with no headgear and 8oz gloves would be much, much different.
Vanes definitely got the best of him but he's a fast fighter who throws in combinations and that is good work for Jr.
didnt this guy get lucky with huma?
i wouldnt say lucky... but Ouma fought the fight of his life and still lost a close decision.
Vanes has earned his shot at the title and we will see him in some real tough battles soon.
Plaster wraps out of the way because you know Cheato used them against Cotto but anyway lets leave that out, You really think JR is on Margarito's league in terms of stamina and chin? The Margarito who faced guys like Santos, Williams and Cintron before he faced Cotto? The same man who walked tru fire that took almost everything he had left by getting hit by power shot after power shot against Cotto? You really think JR can go thru that or has the chin to endure that? He doesn't even throw when the other men throws. He can't keep Cotto off him because he lacks skills and punching power.
JR and Margarito are two different type of fighters.
Good post, but I dont agree. Chavez And Marg have almost the same style with a really good inside game. Offcourse JCCjr is nowhere near as proven as Marg but his chin is damn good so far, and like Marg he doesnt have the one punch KO but the accumulation of punches is what breaks the fighter down.
I agree JR is not at Margs level YET, but i think he has more potential. His stamina should be good with this long camp and hopefully Ariza and freddy improved his game.
The thing is that I dont beleive Cotto is anywhere near the fighter he was when he fought Marg. His speed isnt there anymore, he doesnt throw near the amount of combinations he use to, and he is not as agressive as before. He is far from being a bum, and he might still whoop chavez, but JCCjr style is still a nightmare for Cotto. Jr has shown he isnt bother when getting hit and aslong as stamina permits he doesnt quit.
Regardless i think it will be a solid fight which im willing to pay for. Mexicans and Ricans always come to fight (Mexicans usually win :spankme:)
we talking about chavez jr. or the margarito who made cotto his bitch?
deja vu from 2008.
