Andre Ward and Bernard Hopkins have exhibited in back to back weeks that the slick African American style of boxing is still DOMINANT at the elite levels of boxing.
I'm not looking for a race war. I'm doing this to give props to the African American slick style of boxing.
When this style is executed by the right pugilist, it is nearly unbeateable in the squared circle.
What a stupid, stupid post.
There is no such thing as the 'slick african american style'. Its a fuking myth. A slick fighter is a slick fighter regardless of colour, yet every time an african american fighter gets a win in a high profile fight this same tired old **** gets dredged up.
Neither Hopkins or Ward can be described as slick, so yes, this was indeed a very stupid thread.
The slick AA style only works against another AA boxer..
Really?
Have you ever watched these fights:
Pernell Whitaker vs. JC Chavez
Floyd Mayweather vs. Diego Corrales
Joel Casamayor vs. Mike Katsidis
Chris Byrd vs. David Tua
Paul Spadafora vs. Pito Cardona
Andre Ward vs. Arthur Abraham
Winky Wright vs. Felix Trinidad/Fernando Vargas
etc, etc, etc, etc...
I knew it wouldnt be long before some americans got on their boxes about a win.... LOL, some things never change
Come on, it was a good win but pascal is very limited and lets face it a slugger like froch did the same thing!! Very good win and for his age a great win but lets not get too carried away. Hopkins has also looked horrible in some of his fights and has big problems handling speed and workrate, even in his younger days against taylor. All pascal does is jump in and flurry, hopkins is too smart and has a good chin to get caught too often,
Floyd is a special case, noone can match his style fighting at the moment, ward is unproven but people have built him up as if hes the best years ago!! amazing
As for the other slicksters, they all have their problems, some of them huge
dont confuse slickness with craftiness bro.
Maybe I am confusing the two.
However I've always considered Hopkins to be a crafty and slick.
I think Hopkins can be a very slick counterpuncher when he wants to. I thought he demonstrated that this past weekend vs. Pascal.
But the more I think about it, maybe crafty is a better word to describe what Hopkins does in the ring.
I would say Hopkins is more CRAFTY & CLEVER then he is slick, similar to what James Toney use to do with his Shoulder Roll/Counters, Hopkins and Toney in even in their PRIME they never fought as if they was afraid to get HIT, if anything after they get hit they usually come after you even more
Slick is more of what Martinez, Mayweather, Dirrell, Rigondeaux...just to name a FEW CURRENT FIGHTERS WHO ARE TRULY "SLICK" they hit and try not to get hit...OF COURSE THEY GET CAUGHT SOMETIMES, they are NOT PERFECT, the Slickest Fighters In Boxing History been caught a few times...Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker
and it is no such thing as SLICK AFRICAN AMERICAN STYLE...JUST A SLICK STYLE...many Cuban fighters also use that SLICK STYLE: Rigondeaux, Gamboa and so many over the years in the Amateurs and Olympics
Also Willie Pep is one of the FOUNDING FATHERS at MASTERING THE ART OF SLICK FIGHTING, Pep could win rounds without throwing a punch and just by making his opponents look so stupid swinging AT AIR
Fight Slick frustrate the hell out of Casual Fans because they don't have the full GRASP of Boxing nor do they truly understand what they are watching nor do they know why certain fighters fight that way so they quickly call it "RUNNING"
If I have the Speed and Quickness over my opponents...WHY IN THE FUK would I stand and fight with him and FIGHT HIS FIGHT when I can stick and move and make him miss me ALL NIGHT? It is unfair for fans to expect every fight to STAND AND BRAWL...it is actually very STUPID if you really think about it. It is not any fighters job TO LET HIS OPPONENT HIT HIM so the fans can be "MORE ENTERTAINED"
Very intelligent post!! I can't argue your logic.
dominate in being boring as sh1t
props to b-hop though
I agree.
Most dominant athletes or teams are very boring.
See the Tim Duncan led Spurs of a few years ago...
Bernard Hopkins...
The New England Patriots...
Pernell Whitaker... Mayweather... Lennox Lewis
They're boring because most people find the fundamentals of anything BORING. However, fundamentals are the building blocks of greatness!!
I stand by my point, Hopkins style is HOPKINS style. He doesn't fight like Pep and Whitaker. I feel like everytime you bring an entire group of people into the discussion, you detract from the SINGLE man's accomplishments.
Of course Hopkins has his own style, but his style is not completely original.
He admits that most of his style was infleunced by other African American fighters like Marvin Hagler and Bennie Briscoe. Hopkins obviously took bits and pieces of what those fighters did and added them to his own style.
However, Hopkins has more defensive awareness and slickness than both of those fighters. Most great African American boxers (past or present) have put a giant emphasis on DEFENSE and COUNTERING.
Maybe Willie Pep did invent the "african american slick style" of boxing. That's fine. This is not a race bait thread.
Its obvious that most African American boxers prefer the slick and defense first style.
You saw/see elements of it in Ali, Ray Robinson, Hopkins, Leonard, Mccallum, Toney, Jones, Mayweather, Ward, etc...

In all fairness Hopkins style of fighting is black in origin, he says it himself all the time. To paraphrase he says I learned how to fight like this in philly from brothers who were defense minded. Then he goes on to talk about how he developed the style more to tailor it to his strengths and weaknesses
The slick african american style has also failed so u can't just go and make this thread when the style works and expect everyone to agree with it. It has failed many times so its not unbeatble.
It is unbeatable when there is a good boxing brain with it, reflexes and hunger. But then again, what style isn't great when you have all those? I think what's special about the SAAS (slick african-american style) is the fact they don't get hit often at all and that's awesome skill in a punching game. Take Ward as the most perfect example right now, i think he'll beat Bute easy, Froch in somewha easy way and the rest of them by a beating if he fights them. It's a shame those cats will avoid him like the plague. Like Floyd, when he was in his prime, no one wanted a piece of him, as soon as he hit 32 people started lining up.

You are right. But then again many people will jump out of their ways to say "slick african american style"??? every time someone black, slick or not, loses so i can see where the TS is coming from too.

I wouldn't say that Hopkins has this so called "slick style" that for example Ward, Dirrell or Bradley have.
Hopkins has a completely different style, and altough you can compare Ward with Hopkins because they tend to grab their opponent, they're still very different... Hopkins doesn't go forward headbutting his opponent.
I wouldn't exactly call Bernard 'slick"
And you don't have to be African American to be slick, ask Camacho...
And if you don't wanna start anything don't put African American in there...

Two guys you got to be joking, Hopkins will be gone when he fights someone good. Ward will lose to Bute or Froch he has no power to keep Froch off him nor Bute
