Punching up while shadow boxing is a great idea. Your shoulder stamina gets a tremendous work out from "elevated punch angle" shadow boxing.
Since you are going to have to adjust your punches to whever fighter is in front of you anyway, why not train your muscles for maximum resistance while in the gym. If you fight a taller man you are ready, if you fight shorter men...you are ready.
Its a good idea to add it to your shadow box routine. Just...try to look better than Chavez Jr does.
He looks like a hispanic version of sloth, from the goonies.
Dude I hear you. I'll be watching him fight. I rather him be the real deal than another hyped fighter.
But the circumstances with how the belt was given to Zbik plus his low KO record shows that Jr has taken the easy path to the belt. My low expectations are there but wouldn't mind to be impressed
Ditto
But well at least Zbik was an Olympic medalist and you know every promoter will try to protect his prospect, now i just hope the good fights will come.
Someone correct me if im wrong, But Chavez JR. catches a lot of flack for his opponents which is only natural as fans cuz' we want to see the reason "For the hype" behind a fighter, but if im not mixtaken he never was a amatuer fighter, thats why his record is inflated with bums, it's almost like they had to make up for the missed time, a lot of guys as amatuers will have 60+ Amatuer fights if not in the 90's -100's ...
So i think naturally if someone never fought as a amatuer why throw him to the wolves??....
but again if im wrong on him about never fighting Am then correct me, but i dont remember this guy being a amatuer and thats had a lot to do with on why he's being pampered with his opponents.
He only had one amateur fight and it was more like a circus exhibition fight at 2 rounds, it was versus the son of the great Maromero Paez, Jorge Paez Jr., they were just kids, and after that he never had an amateur fight, they put him straight to the pro's at 17 years old
Here's the fight

Yeah of course I know he's not trying to make him slower. I also believe that he's trying to do what you just said, capitalize on his strenght while mantaining speed, but I've seen Chavez Jr eight last fights and he wasn't actually strong either.
So he's not naturally strong and he's not naturally fast. By training him to be stronger he may be able to compete with some regular MW boxers, but from what I have seen, he'll still not be able to hit as hard as I don't know lets say Pavlik. And by adding all that muscle mass he'll not be able to compete with some faster boxers ( well, most of MW boxers are about as fast or faster as Chavez Jr)
One thing that I believe he's doing right now is not only train for Zbik. Yeah, he has a fight against Zbik and maybe he believes that his opponent is no that hard to beat, so he's already trying to make some improvements for the Cotto match by being stronger and heavier. Cotto will be lighter and smaller in a fight between him and Chavez Jr...
Fair points you have,
But well the kid has not been that long on MW, he has like 3 fights at the weight, versus Rowland, Duddy and Lyell, in neither of those fights those guys looked stronger than him (but i know they are just gatekeepers)
The one thing this kid has, is that he likes to fight, i remember one time he was talking in Mexican TV, and he was asked if he had fear or was nervous in his pro debut (since he never had an amateur fight), but he just responded calmly and said, that he has never had fear or has being nervous in a fight, that he likes to fight, and you can see it in his fights, he's a born fighter.
The way he wants to be like his father and tries to slug it out with this smaller rival, instead of using his reach and coast to a decision.
And the kid has hell of a chin, i have seen him taking flush shots that will have knocked out other fighter, he's very resistant to punishment, and now with his added stamina and strength, we will have to see in what this kid turns out.
I get your point, but why not give the kid a chance and see if he can stick to this kind of training.
This is his second real camp with Roach, his first one, was versus Duddy and that was his best fight, for the Lyell fight he only had Roach for 2 weeks and his stamina was horrible and he knew it, so this training camp is even longer than the camp of the Duddy fight, and he's working his ass off.
But i guess we will have to wait and see it for ourselves in his next fights.

If you been watching boxing for as long as I have been fighters like him will train hard once and then get pampered again. He hasn't had no penalty for past bad peformances cause ppl still buy his fights.
It might stick with him if he likes it but for a long time it has been said that he is lazy

You don't think a Cotto fight or a Canelo Alvarez fight will make him work even more harder? i guess i don't understand your logic

In his latest interview he said now they are going to work in speed, working with smaller sparring partners, drills, etc.
I don't think Ariza is trying to making slower, more like making him stronger, Alex knows about that stuff.
And well Chavez was never and will never be that fast, so maybe they are just trying to capitalize on his strenght and mantain his current speed.

He looks in good shape and seems really dedicated, but I have to admit to bursting out laughing at that shadow boxing! WTF were those noises he was making?
It was like watching David Hasselhof being possesed by the spirit of Bruce Lee.
Hey some guys are not born with the gift of being slick haha
Just look at Big George or even Arce, el Travieso is on par with Julito on shadow boxing. :boxing:

His stamina might be better but he looks un-coordinated. Zbik has fought more tougher guys. And if Jr wins doubt that he would train this hard again

Roach without a doubt will help, Chavez Jr. seems to be 100% dedicated now, but gosh he such a hard guy to watch workout, he's so Clumsy looking in everything he does , long term it just makes me wonder.....him with roach has made things interesting tho' cuz' i think majority boxing fans wanna see really what this guy is all about and know that it's time to start moving up as far as who he's fighting.
