LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is scheduled to fight newly crowned World Boxing Council Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz on August 17 at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas. No official press conference is called yet as of this writing by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), who promotes the Mexican-American fighter, and the camp of Mayweather, Jr. whose promotional campaign spins under his own company, Mayweather Promotions, Inc.
GBP officials, who offered a few details on condition of anonymity, said they will divulge the specifics of the fight and will call for press conference shortly but decline to confirm its certainty.
Mayweather, Jr. last fought against Sugar Shane Mosley on May 1 of last year and earned a unanimous decision. He was reported to have entertained a plan to set up himself a match with an unknown opponent and have it staged in Africa. But, the same was aborted according to inside report.
As of this writing, it's unclear still if Mayweather, Jr. really wants to fight world's No. 1 boxer today, Manny Pacquiao. The defamation lawsuit filed by Pacquiao against Mayweather, Jr. on the issue of the latter's public declaration alleging the former of a potential use of performance enhancing drugs may have just deter both fighters in making the most anticipated fight between the two to happen in the near future.
Pacquiao, for his part, said he is contented about his successful boxing career saying "It's okay for me if he does not want to fight. I have accomplished enough. But, the boxing fans want that fight to happen."
where did ya find this and is it real
This bullsh!t was written by the Pac nuthugger who posted it. Mayweather/Ortiz will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Virtually all of Mayweather's recent fights have been fought there and this one will to. There will likely be fewer people in attendance than Pac/Mosley, but I guarantee it will have a larger gate than Pac/Mosley.
Could have been a misprint (September 17-Mexican Independence Day-has been the date mentioned for this potential fight). I still won't believe it until there's at least a press conference with both fighters though.
Actually, it's on Saturday.
Seem like a lot of you were right afterall...
I never understood the point of being sarcastic over the internet.
Like, no one can detect sarcasm via text unless you are making it really obvious.
It's pointless to me.
Boxrec has little cred I have found.
If this were true, I'd think Ortiz would be hollering when he said a few days ago, it wasn't true.
But maybe they are working on this and put out floaters to see fans reactions?
The paper that first reported it was the Daily Kansan which is the University of Kansas' newspaper. According to the Kansan Victor Ortiz said at a local fan event in Lawrence Kansas that he would be fighting Floyd Maywearther in September.
My take is Victor actually told the paper that he was either negotiating with Mayweather or Mayweather is who he wants to fight. Not that the fight is made and ready to go. Then the reporter, who is a college student because all of the writers for that paper are students, misunderstood what Ortiz said and wrote the article all of this "news" is coming from.
When asked why he's fighting on a Wednesday, Mayweather responded, "See.. Manny Pacquiao is just a weekend fighter, but I'm my own boss. I fight on any day of the week that I want. If Manny wants to fight me, he takes the tests on the weekend, and we fight on Monday. Floyd Monday Mayweather isn't ducking or dodging nobody."
lmao.......
i'm completely ok with this fight, even though ortiz doesn't stand much chance. if this news is true, props to floyds attitude. pac is a great boxer but he is not the center of the universe.
