THE E.K. INFLUENCED "IS MAYWEATHER A SUPERSTAR??" POLL: OKAY a couple nights ago at my gym I polled twenty people, men and women, between the ages of 17 and 62...the night before, former amateur star Eric Kelly (National Golden Gloves Champion from Brooklyn, NY) says Mayweather IS a superstar...I disagreed...I say ALI, LEONARD AND TYSON were "Superstars"...ELVIS, Michael and Jordan were/are "Superstars"...but Floyd is not exactly one (yet?)...a "Star" yes...but a SUPERSTAR? Nah...so I went to my gym tonight and took it to the people and polled 20 non-boxers from the gym...
I asked each of them if they ever heard of the following three people: Floyd Mayweather Jr., Derek Jeter and Enrique Iglesias.
The results are as follows: All 20 had heard of Derek Jeter and Enrique Iglesias. 13 of the 20 had heard of Mayweather.
Now, for the record, after I asked them that question I pressed them -dug a little deeper- on Pretty Boy Floyd.
One female, aged 39, told me that the truth of the matter was the reason she knew who he was because as luck would have it she heard a news story about him just yesterday about him owing millions in taxes. She also said her husband is an amateur boxing coach at the Coast Guard Academy and she heard him mention Floyd's name before.
Another female, aged 40, originally answered yes when I asked if she knew who Floyd was but...then she asked me if he boxed out of my gym (the one we were standing in at that moment here in Connecticut). (LOLOL, seriously)
A 24 year old female said she had heard of him but then asked me if he was a middleweight. A 33 year old male said he knew he was a boxer but that was all he really knew.
The 61 year old female said she knew him but when pressed she asked me if he was a wrestler or a boxer.
The one person who seemed to really know something about him more than the fact that he is in fact a boxer was the 17 year old boy who told me, "yeah, I know who he is, he's a sick boxer!!"
Finally the 38 year old who said she knew who he was admitted that the only reason she knew who he was is because she was with her husband at the Berto-Ortiz fight last week at Foxwoods and they introduced Floyd and 50 Cent to the crowd and she remembered his name from that.
Also, almost each person who answered yes also said that to tell me the truth they know his name and that he is a boxer but if he were to walk in the gym at that very moment they wouldn't be able to pick him out and recognize him as Floyd Mayweather. If it was Jeter, yes, but Floyd ...no.
So I would say, strictly based on this unofficial and very random polling today, that Floyd is a very recognizable name at this point but a SUPERSTAR?? No, not exactly. A great boxer YES but an instantly recognizable face? Not exactly. They all loved Enrique, though, and one person even named some of Enrique's dad's song LOL (Julio's duet with Willie Nelson comes to mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcfzjWsNAbs << ENJOY!!!
ok i just got done off the basket ball court at my gym. so while we were waiting for the next game i heard this guys 8 of them talking about the UFC fight tomorrow so on and so forth. then someone said something about boxing so i said hey u guys watching the fight next week. they were like fawk yeah it's pacquiao right? that dudes a beast some guy said. then everyone started to talk about him more and more how humble he is and what not. let me tell u this i was the only filipino. majority were white dudes and a viet. then the viet said mayweather is never gonna fight him i think. then this white guy said who's that guy he the guy who fought dela hoya? and everyone was yeah what's his name? so i said floyd. and they were like that guy is all talk.
now after the game i was at the steam room and this old guy saw my tattoo and asked me what it means. and i said it's the logo of my country philippines. and the old guy said "oh manny" i said yeah. he said fights next week. i said yeah but im not to excited about it. he said no one is going to defeat him.
so it was a total of 9 people. not much but hey atleast he's getting a buzz
racist.. you dont know how to distinguish a viet from a korean?
that was left hook tua youre talking about..
take Elvis, Ali, Michael Jackson or Tyson and get them walking around rural africa. You think they'd be recognized?
You think Floyd would be recognized????? LOL
Floyd is a suuperstar in BOXING, not of the world.
You're not a superstar if you are begging your people to root for you. The last boxer who was a superstar was Tyson. Oscar to some degree but not globally. A true superstar is you can go to any country and average Joe will recognize you. Floyd does not fit the bill.
I would NEVER say Floyd isn't super talented and a special boxer, I'm not blind, I know what he is in that ring...the man can FIGHT in a way very few ever could...and in boxing circles he is a superstar...but in the world scheme of things? NO, he just isn't. A superstar is known intimately by non-fans of his field....in 1968, for example, you could ask 100 people on any street in America if they knew who Elvis Presley was...do the same for Michael Jackson in 1984 and 100 of 100 would say YES...music fans or not, of course they'd know who they were...they both just had that type of public range...Floyd doesn't...it's not his fault, boxing obviously isn't super huge as it was when Ali, Louis, Robinson were doing their thing...
We are talking about a boxer in 2011 here , its a put down sport to start with and only a few in history have really transcended the sport , Floyd has done pretty good so has Pac , this is the internet age where exposure and hype is at melt down , great fighters can get lost in the crowd today , its not like the old days where a special few were made world icons and the others were never heard off , today its far harder to stand out as the competition in everything is so very much harder , you have many singers that are better singers than Elvis and the Beatles but they were the first greats and that makes them immortals , the world has changed because of the computer age .
this is not true,i don't know about elvis but the beatles are probably the most talented performers ever and all these so called better singers could never do what the beatles did but i do agree that it is much harder know to be as big as an ali, elvis, or the beatles with so much going on in the world
Sorry man, Kobe, Tiger, and Lebron are on a different level. They are not just icons in their respective sport, they're icons in sports in general. They're on Sportscenter every night. I ain't knocking Floyd, its just that boxing ain't a big sport, at least not in America. Kids grow up dreaming about being the next Jordan, Kobe, Brady, or Woods. You see commercials literally everyday with these guys starring in them. I'd say Pac is a bigger crossover star than Floyd globally and even don't get the kind of love those other guys get.
how would a boxer be on sportscenter every night when you only perform every 3 months or so? basket ball players play every other day.sportscenter hardly ever shows boxing highlights but whenever floyd fights they always show highlights on sportscenter and espn also scores the card live on sportscenter.non sports fans know every other athlete like they know floyd which is they probably know there name and the sport they play but nothing more
LOL
Just because a few people on a Forum spend their lives BASHING AND HATING the guy, that does not mean the WHOLE WORLD FEELS THE WAY YOU DO!
Mayweather is a SUPERSTAR, he became one during the Oscar fight and during the BUILD UP of that fight when he decided to become the "BAD GUY" in boxing...in turn it has made him A LOT OF MONEY!
The problem is that because some people don't like him, they spend their time trying to get OTHERS to not like lol I don't care for Mayweather much either but it would be flat out STUPID for me to say that he is not a great fighter and he is not a Superstar
That is a little weird going around asking random people about Mayweather hahaha that is like that dude Elie ESNEWS what ever his name is on youtube, that dude can't get enough of Mayweather vs Pacquiao :nonono:
Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao are both superstars, this is such a stupid thread and the TS must live such a boring life that he needs to go ask random people at gyms (yoga class?) about random sh.it.
Hahahaha! Do you know who the TS is????? If I'd done even HALF the things and met even half the people he has when I die I'll be a VERY content man.

I'm so relaxed. You have said slick things before about Floyd and his family. I just call it how I see it. In boxing, Floyd reign supreme...if the sport was more mainstream he would be just as popular as Tyson was in the 90s. Ali was famous not only for boxing but social issues too. No boxer will be that again, not in a niche sport so why should Floyd be expected to meet that standard. You as boxing fan should try and uplift the sport like the
17 yr old. Instead you get online and write a negative tone thread. Quit hating!
I know Jeff personally for example and would never say anything slick about him as he is a very good dude...I never "hate", I , as u claim to, tell it like I see it...if I said something slick about Floyd, Roger or Floyd Sr. it was something the rest of the entire world of boxing was already thinking...I dont say anything undeserved...and when Floyd does something good, believe me I point that out too...
Many boxers have become SUPERstars, though...it isnt HATE on my part, thats just foolish to say...debating a man's level of fame on a BOXING board isnt hate, its just a discussion...what is dumb is for you to dsay this thread is an "attempt at minimizing his importance to the sport"...relax, man, its just a topic of discussion, PERIOD...

What is the point of this thread. boxing isn't even a star sport so how in the hell would Floyd become a Jordan like superstar? Until boxing regains its popularity no boxer will be a "superstar". Iceman need to quit the hate....this attempt to minimize Floyd's importance to the sport is just dumb. There is no need to try and move the goalpost! Floyd is a big deal when it comes to boxing

It's obvious that Iceman doesn't like Mayweather. I sense a little jealousy on his part. To waste his time and poll "average" people? And more people know ENRIQUE? then they do Mayweather? I can understand Jeter but ENRIQUE??? CMON SON lol
Women would more likely know Enrique than Floyd. Plus he's huge in Latin America. That is a very large group of people that would be more likely to know Enrique over Floyd. Music just reaches a wider audience than boxing.

Nah, Mark, NOT AT ALL...I've met Floyd several times, even trained alongside him in the gym before...I actually tell people all the time that he is MUCH different in real life than he is on TV etc...always find him to be very cool...and he is a GREAT fighter...for me this has nothing to do with him personally as much as it is just myself and another boxer friend of mine debating over what and who qualifies as a "superstar"...he said Floyd is one , I disagreed...after the debate I told him I would do an unofficial poll and see how it turned out, I posted it for him and had it copied and pasted so I posted it here, too, thats all...NOTHING PERSONAL aginst Floyd whatsoever...
Come on man, nobody would get the reaction Michael Jackson would get walking into anywhere. But if You know anything about boxing period, you know the name Mayweather Jr. Like Ko King said" Mosley and cotto are stars, pac man and pbf are superstars.

I would say he's a "star"...but a superstar could create pandemonium wherever he goes pretty much...Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson walking into a college dorm in their days would be INSANE, the kids would go crazy...I just wouldnt think PBF would get the same reaction...Ali stopped traffic in Times Square and at Piccadilly Circus in his hey-dey...

For these guys at your gym to ask who mayweather is, its obvious they don't watch boxing. If You know Manny, you know Floyd.
Exactly.......
No way around that.
I wouldn't call him a classic superstar in that most superstars are well liked and appreciated but in terms of boxing yes he is because he is very well known for a boxer even beyond standard fans for whatever reasons. To me a star is known just in his field a superstar goes beyond and while you could argue degrees of being known Floyd is known beyond his field.
Plus I have never met a person that knows even a bit about boxing that doesn't have an opinion on the man.
