For Sugar Ray Robinson to have even fought in 8 divisions, he would have had to have fought at EVERY weight there was at the time.
112-175 pounds (I believe it was 175 at the time?). Weight range of 63 pounds all up
For Pacquiao to get his titles, he has gone from 108-154 pounds. Now that's 46 pounds which while still big, is a whole third less than what SRR would have had to do (although I believe for his heaviest title Pac came in at a catchweight of 148 anyway, bringing it down to 40)
Stupid, stupid thing to try separate them by. Especially considering Robinsons career had a weight variation of 38 pounds as it was. Not even considering who the titles had to be taken FROM.
Both of these guy are the greatest of their era but according to the poll that has been conducted few years ago pac is behind robinson and ali is behind pac.
Where was THAT poll?
In Payatas? Or in Cebu?
Both of these guy are the greatest of their era but according to the poll that has been conducted few years ago pac is behind robinson and ali is behind pac.
Not to sound like Roger Mayweather but 31 people don't know shiit about boxing.
So true! Perhaps it was Roger (everyone is on drugs, but no one comes across as drug addled as me) Mayweather who kept voting for Manny after a major session on the pipe.
No disrespect to Manny, he's amazing but SRR in a class all of his own.
I really cant believe this poll. Is this for real?
"titles in 8 divisions" - i see the bobfather has gotten to you all. Thats the way they are marketing manny pacquiao to the casual fan, and this has sparked off a movement of avid followers and legions of passion filled idiots exerting their contaminated views and energy to produce ridiculous comments, arguments and bat sh1t crazy things like this here poll.
Are you out of your fracking mind?! Sugar Ray Robinson being polled against Manny Pacquiao for the greatest fighter of all time?!! and at this current moment in time 31% of fans have voted in the favour of the pacman. Sheesh!
The next poll should be "Did Elvis Shoot JFK?" . It should score in the mid 40's if we follow the same trend of forum intelligence , i predict.
Come on!
Pacquiao is a great fighter. But polling him with Sugar Ray Robinson for the greatest of all time is just not right. No disrespect to the pacman.
Had the poll have read "whos the greatest fighter of all time: Sugar Ray Robinson or Harry Greb?" , then that can be argued.
For me personally i have special admiration for Greb. But I acknowledge that the sugar man put the sweet in the science.
Very interesting poll. I simply cant believe this lol
SRR is the greatest ever just for fighting under the old rules that today's fighters would cry about. SRR dominated in an era where you could do just about anything in the ring. Now that's toughness.
AWESOME POST....I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. Dudes could spit in your face and elbow you, no to mention load gloves with no scrutiny at all and people are forgetting that Robinson was a black man fighting in the height of racist times.....they would not even check the other guy's stuff because of Robinson's skin color.
If Robinson was fighting in this era, he would have all the benefits of technology and sports knowledge so it would only make him that much better fighting today. There is no argument in my mind, as a fan of boxing, that Robinson was the greatest ever.
That doesnt answer my question. This isnt about fair this is comparing one fighter to the next. Having over 200 Fights and An almost 100 fight win streak is the precedence set. And that's what makes srr the goat. That's why his legacy is untouchable. And of course u factor in w/l/d's
oh no doubt......
Sugar Ray Robinson Frequently cited as the greatest boxer of all time, Robinson's performances in the welterweight and middleweight divisions prompted sportswriters to create "pound for pound" rankings, where they compared fighters regardless of weight. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
Defeated other Hall of Fame fighters such as Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, Carl 'Bobo' Olson, Henry Armstrong, Rocky Graziano and Kid Gavilan. Nuff Said. Nooo Steroid Era
Yes Ali said SRR was the best didnt he? I havent heard Pac say it though. I wonder who Pac thinks is the best? I think Pac said Pac was the best, and for a humble guy to say it makes you wonder.
Also who did SRR think was the best? But even though SRR had 100s of fights, didnt all fighters have that many fights back then? Thats how it was so its not as if what SRR was doing made him at a disadvantage.
