DAN! Did you rewatch Berto-Ortiz? If so, did you score it differently after seeing it on tv than you did when you were there?

I rewatched it but I did not re-score it. Been a lot of people upset with my scorecard, which is their opinion. There were about three pretty close rounds to me. I know I came up with 113-112 for Berto as I watched the fight at ringside. And I know there were several other writers who had the same score (or 114-113 for Berto), including Tim Smith, Rob Borges, Steve Farhood and Mike Marley and others. It is what it is.
i was there and there's no way u can give that fight to berto! plain and simple other than round 2 and most of rd 6 he was dominated. he hit ortiz with some shots but ortiz was just not gonna be denied, not that night
I think people need to give Rafael some slack, he gets some huge hate over here lol. Yeah it was a bad scoring card, but his opinion is just that... an opinion.
I don't really like his written articles that much (seems biased sometimes), but I don't loathe the guy. And from what I've seen he doesn't always put out terrible scorecards. Why do people hate him so much? :dunno:
Because hes never stepped foot in a ring but talks all this garbage about some truly hard working fighters.
Its funny how he critiques some of the most top athletes in the world, yet hes a fat slob of a human being, he knows very little about boxing.. hes just on a big platform (ESPN) to make people think he does.
Industry people hate him, ask around.

maybe sitting ringside he saw things differently like being distracted by a chillie dog and a large bucket of chicken. With that said if you watched it on TV there is no possible way you could score that fight berto. He won like 3 rounds.
Exactly.
I could understand them giving him 4 rounds max and even thats a stretch for me...... but they all score it for Berto? Hes laying on the ropes basically all night, looking sloppy as hell, no jabs, simply being outfought.
Harold Lederman was in the exact same arena and he scored it pretty well, so did his daughter if I remember correctly.
A rare occasion where the judges had it right and not the ringside reporters. Of course boxing reporting has been below par for the last few years now.

What a pretentious prick Dan is. Why couldn't he rescore the fight? He can't admit that his original scorecard was out of whack?...

c'mon son... in the clinches berto didn't do shiit... ortiz won all those rounds which were the 6th until the 12th.
It's pretty low of Dan to discredit those third row guys. I've been to two HBO events ringside being one of those "Third row guys" and most of them are highly professional in the way they act and analyze the fight. Maybe they were different for this fight, but everyone is their to a job and that doesn't make them any less credible.
I still don't understand how people had that fight close.

Speaking of, how sick were those punches ringside? They were absolutly viscious on tv. Which knockdown was the most brutal live?

I think probably when Ortiz went down in the sixth round. He was hurt bad.
Eric P (Saratoga Springs, NY)
Dan, the round escapes me but I think it was 6 - berto was winning the round, dropped ortiz and then ortiz dropped berto. Is that a 10-9 round for berto because he won most of it. Is it 10-10 or 9-9?

Most of us scored that round 10-9 for Berto. The knockdowns evened each other out, but besides the knockdowns, Berto dominated the round and therefore won it.
