Man it sucks they can't fight, they both deserve it. Both these guys are 100% class. Here's some quotes:
Mares:
“I was feeling sorry for myself, but seeing Agbeko hunched over and limping at today’s press conference put everything in perspective for me,” he said. “I’m really pulling for him to get better. I want to win a world title but I want to win it from a real champion. I know Agbeko is for real, he beat two guys (Darchiyan and Perez) that I went to war with.
“I think he’s worth waiting for. It’s hard being patient but these experiences help me grow. When the time comes, believe me, I’ll be ready.”
Agbeko:
“Good afternoon. First off, all I would like to say a very big sorry to Abner Mares,” Agbeko told the gathered media. “And to Vic Darchinyan, Yonnhy Perez, Don King Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions, and Gary Shaw Promotions. And to the boxing fans, I am really sorry for what happened. It is a very, very big blow for myself and to everyone involved in boxing and to my family. This was a fight I really trained for and I was set to make myself and my country proud. The whole nation was behind me and it was a very big blow to everyone. I really want to say I am sorry to all of you. I want to say thank you to the doctor who took care of me. I want to thank Showtime for giving me the time to heal and get back to the Finals because this is a fight that I really want to fight. I want to prove that I am the best bantamweight in the world. I hope very soon I will be back on my feet and this fight will happen.”
Is Abner still fighting? Or are they just going to show the Vic-Perez fight?
Negative, I read in multiple sites that GBP tried to secure an opponent for Abner with little to no luck...bummer! I love watching the kid fight I haf some serious cash on Abner too.
Problem is the flu is unpredictable, you can't see it coming. Had John had the flu triggered by something and then did it again to trigger it I would be grilling him as well. Joesph knew that flying or sitting on a plane causes this problem in his body and still decided to go through it. This shouldn't be a surprise to him or his promotion team since he suffered from the same thing in a previous fight. Agbeko should now consider an alternate way of getting to fights that doesn't involve him sitting for a long time or his team should only accept bouts that are in the New York area.
It's not all Joesph though, this is common in the sport of boxing. Due to what seems like very limited fines and not many penalties fighters seem to take their craft not very serious. Look at Joan Guzman for example. It wasn't until he failed to make what his 3rd fight because of weight that he was fined and suspended from the sport? That is absurd and unacceptable to me. Look at Floyd Mayweather vs JMM. I know it's a lot of money that he lost on paper but to Floyd the million dollars or whatever the amount was peanuts, that didn't deter him from coming in overweight. We need stiffer penalties for fighters that don't hold up their end of their contract. A lot of fighters do not respect their contract because breaching it is not a burden to them.
sciatica nerves attacks are far more unpredictable than the fukn flu check..
they don't happen every time you sit for a long period of time, that's just one thing of many that can aggravate it. he has had a couple fights since a small episode he had before the vic d fight.
lol, what, you want dude to spend his entire life standing up.
go bi tch about dudes like guzman and those types in some other thread. this is about agbeko and mares and this situation is a horrible example to try and prove your point.
are you naive enough to believe that the vast majority of boxers don't have some kind of health issue prior to their fights?
i really can't believe that you're serious, you can't possibly be serious can you?
Fine, then in his case, his promoter needs to schedule all his fights in the New York region. If his problem gets worse, why continue to schedule a guy that you know can't make it to the fight in the first place?
If a fighter can't make weight, get to the fight, or whatever holds it up then the problem needs to be addressed. We can't just keep having fights scheduled, tv slots made, purses bid on, fighters training for nothing, and fans shelling out their hard earned money just for an imaginary fight.
It reminds me of Bradley V Alexander when Bradley was fighting the flu. I was looking forward to the fight and fully expected the fight not to go on because this is the norm in boxing. Had that happened it would of hurt my love for boxing and I'm a hardcore fan. Imagine what something like that happened to a casual fan, it could really sway them. We wait months for a fight to actually happen and to see a fight get canceled is not a good thing.
I have my extreme doubts about this
why? well someone who is a hardcore fan usually knows when to smell BS and when an injury is legit
you cannot
I am literally amazed at your misdirected hostility towards Agbeko, who from what I have seen has never shown weakness or a penchant for excuses or backing ouy of fights
he finds an injury, a fairly serious one at that, and you are up in arms about it.
were you this angry when Chris John backed out of his rematch with Rocky Juarez because he had flu like symptoms? Hell it wasn't even something as serious as sciatic it was a flu
I'm speaking in general now but I'm not going to let Agbeko slide either. Yes, he properly trained for this fight but he didn't prepare himself correctly. If what you say is true about Agbeko suffering from this from the Vic fight he should of really considered going by car, train or whatever. He took a chance when he went on a plane and once again suffered from his nerve problem. This is the first time he had to withdraw from a big fight so I forgive him but if he continues to ignore his condition and jump on planes I will see it as a slap in the face to the fans. He has a contract to fulfill and he knows he has a condition that is triggered by flying, he needs to choose a different option.
bro, its not flying, its sitting for long periods of time. It's the big ass nerve in your spine
If Agbeko doesn't start using one of these immediately he's a disgrace to boxing fans everywhere

Well, if flying is too much(nyc to la isn't really a long flight) then he should of considered using different transportation. Over the last decade it seems like fights get canceled left and right and only the fans are losing. I'm getting annoyed by fighters not taking care of themselves or properly prepared for their jobs. You get paid a lot to fight, if you can't do it then get a regular job like the rest of us. I refuse to be sympathetic.
.
Are we even talking about the same thing????????????
So you're saying that Agbeko didn't properly train or prepare for his fights?
I think you're projecting a little bit today Check, do you have someone you can talk to?
and do you know anything at all about Agbeko's condition or are you talking out of your a$$ because I've had to correct you a few times in this thread.

If they don't want to fight, someone else will do it for them(boxing is still pretty lucrative). Fans run every sport and in boxing they deserve the fights that they are promised.
you gotta step away from the computer a bit and rethink your stance
I can understand your train of thought about fighters not being the way they used to but
Agbeko isn't one of those guys. Guy is always in shape and stays that way.
big disappointment
this fight coulda stole the show in boxing
been anxious to see this one
bantam is red hot and these guys were willing to step up
Showtime got this right, simple tournament, not round robin
winner fight Nonito for 118 supremacy
this was a bigger fight than it was getting credit for being
sad to read about Agbeko condition, hope he gets healthy again
Okay, so what's going to prevent this from happening when the fight is signed for a later date? Are the fans going to be looking forward to the fight, just for it to be canceled again? If Agbeko is having a serious problem with this(which it sounds like he is) he should reconsider taking fights in America or flying a month or two early to get himself normal. It's unfortunate that he is dealing with this problem and Mares is being professional about it but Agbeko knows he has a problem and needs to address it accordingly in the future. It would be unacceptable if it happens again and part of me is not happy that Agbeko hasn't seen a doctor to address the problem.
WTF?????
He lives and trains in NYC fool.
You have NO CLUE what you're talking about. And he has since seen doctors. This thing just randomly happens.
well, lets see check, he has about 30 fights and it happened one time that postponed a fight. now you want to shi t on him Should we ban anyone that ever has any health problems from boxing period so this doesn't happen again?
So, why did he pass out? I don't know for certain that is was the weight but I'm not going to take Agbekos word for it. What have the doctors said about it?
Either way my statements don't just go for Agbeko, it goes for all fighters that can't keep up their side of their contract. Boxing is bigger than any one fighter and if fighters aren't professional with their weight then they need to leave the sport. A lot of money can be made in boxing and if you aren't dedicated the sport will find other fighters to fill in. It's about the fans, not these fighters.
he has a sciatic nerve attack after he got off a long plane ride. definitely not out of the ordinary. he didn't pass out, he fell to the floor in pain because of the gigantic nerve in his back ..
he had a minor one in the past before the vic d fight.
Absolute class all the way around from both guys. Guys like this really make the entire sport look good and it is a shame that they don't get more exposure in the main stream. 99.9% of the general public have absolutely no idea who either of these guys are which is unfortunate. I will definitely be looking forward to their if it happens and wish King Kong a successful and speedy recovery..although I do like Mares in an exciting and very competitive fight.
I'm gonna have to disagree. Agbeko may of tried to make weight, which is good, but he was unprofessional by allowing himself to walk around at a weight that he could not drop in the allotted amount of time. Instead of being able to drop it in a somewhat healthy way, he probably starved himself and destroyed any hope of a fight.
We cut these fighters too much credit. Their job is to entertain and also be professional(this is why they get paid more than most people do in a year for 36 minutes of fighting), which one part of being professional is being able to keep your body conditioned and make a weight that you made a commitment to make. I believe Agbeko should be heavily fined for not being able to fight. This sport is about the fans, not the fighters.
really, how does this make you feel.
Agbeko quote:
That is the way we run” explained Addy (Agbeko's trainer). “We run eight-to-ten miles a day. Normally, different fighters train differently. American fighters train one way; Ethiopian fighters train another way. African fighters, this is how we train. You can take somebody to the gym and first day, we do little exercise and they think we don’t train. A lot of people want to feel pain before they fight, so different people train differently.”
“No, no, no, I had no trouble with the weight,” said Agbeko. “I am a hard worker. I always prepare hard for my fights. It is something I am used to. Sometime I spar maybe seven, six days to the fight. Sometimes two weeks from the fight. It depends.”
yes, you do have no idea what you're talking about

Wow what a class act,I was picking King Kong to win too..But I like both fighters, props to showtime for letting King Kong get better so we can see a great fight in the future..
Me too, after all it isn't very often that the 4 best fighters ina given weight class actually fight each other.
arguably 4 of the best 6-7 in a deep class if you want to get technical.
bantam is hot though, lots of dudes with every different style in the book
I hope Agbeko makes it back soon, so we can get this bantamweight settled

Yeah, that was 1 fight that a fight fan with any sense knew was gonna be a great fight.
I hope Agbeko makes it back soon, so we can get this bantamweight settled
