Berto, the WBC welterweight titleholder, and Ortiz have agreed to a catch weight of 145 pounds plus one, or in effect 146. That’s one pound below the welterweight limit.

Can someone explain why they chose to word it as "145 plus one"? Why not just call it "146"?
Is there something in the contract that says Ortiz gets some sort of extra compensation, since Berto weighed in above 145 (145.5)? Would Berto have received some sort of bonus if he had weighed in at 145 or less? Or is it something else?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Look how tired berto is.. Like i said.. Cottonmouth. All teh evidence was in the weigh in, you could clearly see bertos lips and tell he would become lax.
Berto weighed in at 145 for his previous fight vs. Hernandez.
He weighed in at 145.5 (under the "145 plus one" catchweight) for Ortiz, so I don't think it affected him.
Back on topic, I'm still curious what "145 pounds plus one" means, contractually speaking.

Ortiz is a lil bit bigger. But it seems nobody wants to see that bruh.
They are close, Berto is a little bit bigger, not by much though.
Berto's avg fight night weight vs. his last 6 opponents = 157.2
Ortiz' avg fight night weight vs. 6 of his last 8 opponents = 154.5 (can't find fight night weights for his fights w/ Campbell and Alatorre).

Didnt realise it was a catchweight fight. Dumb shiit anyway, Berto most likely woulda came in at 146 anyway, even if he did come in at 147 whats a pound? A man should NOT be able to win a world title if the champion is made to weigh in at weight less than the division limit, period. Now why is this happening again, Vics already said its a perminant move to 147!?
Catchweights are pissin me off now
Berto looked good at the weigh in:
No he doesn't.... Fit sure, but look at his mouth. He's cotton mouthed. The white lip ssho wit.. check out the high quality images of the weigh in BScene posted, he's got a white ring around those boys. That's from dehydration.
It worked in ortiz's favor... big time.
Berto had some serious crust around his lips. I'm talkin crack head dave chappelle type ****.
Thats a sure sign of dehydration.
Berto looked good at the weigh in:
I want to see Berto get jacked up. Dude needs to be grounded a bit as he thinks he is untouchable but keeps fighting overmatched, smaller guys instead of dudes in his division. He should have lost to Collazo and ducked out on the rematch and he makes more money in one fight than most guys make in 3 or 4 fights combined for fighting stiffs normally.
I hope Ortiz catches him and stuns him...a little grounding if you will.
Berto and Ortiz are the same size.

;10383216']The weight limit is 145 pounds, however you can come in at 146. That's what it means. This is a rare exception that doesn't happen often.
They do this in MMA all the time, the weight limit say is 170, well they can come in at 171 without any problems.
In boxing its different, if you go over the weight limit you still gotta put off that weight. Doesn't matter if it's 1/4 of a pound over. You still gotta put it off.
Isn't that a contradiction, though? Unless there are some penalties tied to coming in over 145 (or incentives for coming in at 145 or below), then the limit is 146.
That's why I think there must be some extra incentives in the contract for coming in at 145 or below, otherwise why word it as "145 plus one"?
But that's just me pulling stuff out of my ass.
We need an insider to resolve this. :D

These catchweights are ridiculous. How many more are we going to see implemented in boxing matches? I mean WTF you're either fighting at the welterweight limit 147 or you're not.
