There was a time i'd have given this fight to Ortiz hands down, even moving up in weight. But Ortiz has looked scared in all his fights since Maidana, and Berto has looked great against decent (not great) but decent competition.
I think berto takes it, but does that mean if Ortiz wins, he's back? Or does he have to win convincingly, by dramatic KO or something?
What are we looking to see from Ortiz in this fight? (his retirement?)
I thought this would be a fun thread to revisit.
So I think Wazzaa may have been right, Ortiz looked like the weight was natural for him. He looked good at 147 (160!!!)
I'm not back on the bandwagon yet, but i think this maidana thing could work out for him, people will watch his fights knowing that A: he could knock a dude out or B: someone could make him quit again.
I think as long as he doesn't slip back into that boring "scared" fighter mode like he has been in his last 3 fights.... Ortiz could survive himself.
I don't know. Some one point me in the direction of any advantages that Ortiz has in this fight? Ortiz has some nice qualities, but Berto is just a fighter man.
Yes but you can say the level of opposition has been better for Ortiz because he's faced Maidana.
This will be the biggest test for Berto and I think people are seriously underestimating Ortiz to be honest.
Anything can happen with guys like this, one mistake and someone is asleep.
Doesn't matter what he became, a fan is a fan, unless they just go with who ever is hot, and leave the fighter as soon as he gets cold. 95% of fans are like that.
How many times did Taylor get knocked out cold, and he's still my 2nd favorite fighter ever. Same with RJJ.
By that definition, I'm a fan of Cotto and Katsidis. I'd mention Bradley as well, but he hasn't taken a loss yet for this rule to be applied.
Katsidis is a very entertaining fighter. I'll always be rooting for him. Cotto is self-explanatory. I've been a fan of Bradley ever since he took that monster punch from Kolt in the first round and kept his composure. I've always been sold on that guy becoming a huge force in boxing.
Ortiz is only 2 years older than me, that is pretty young. You say "he use to" like he's now 43 and he doesn't deserve a second chance to change. And like he has no chance, to ever redeem himself.
Look, i'm not a Victor Ortiz supporter, I like him, but I am not a Ortiz supporter. I will always like him as a fighter though and I would root for him as long as he's not fighting fighters I support. I'm just saying though, you're either in or out. You're either a fan or not.
Edwin Valero killed his wife and his supporters didn't care about that. Victor Ortiz hasn't killed any one, he's a humble young boxer, who quit in one fight and all of a sudden every one hopped off the bandwagon. But a killer still gets praised.
GREEN K! Great post! :boxing:
Yeah, but Roy always fights his heart out.
Ortiz used to do that but stopped doing that. Did Roy completely change his fighting style and mentality after the losses?

I have remained a Ortiz fan since the first time I saw him. The Maidana fight ending was definitely disappointing, but I have still been a fan of his. I still got Berto winning though.

and how many l's has roy taken since? if your style doesnt favor winning then you should adapt it so that it does... besides ortiz style is still fan friendly.
Not necessarily. The reason why many of his fans turned their backs on him was because he became such a mental midget after the Maidana loss. I mean, alot of people were rooting for him in the Peterson fight but they got disappointed at the end because of the way Ortiz finished that fight.
Let's be clear. Ortiz can't beat Berto if he fights with the same mentality as he did in the Campbell and Peterson fight. This means that he will have to fight his heart out. The same fans who turned their backs on him have a legit reason to jump back on the bandwagon again because that's the Ortiz they became a fan of in the first place.

IMO, if you are not a fan of Ortiz now, then don't get on the bandwagon if he wins. That's being fake at it's finest. If you are a fan of fighter, you will be there in his worst times. Not leave when he's down, and come back when he's up. Every fighter has their ups and downs. True fans are those that defend them at all times.
I smell an upset. Ortiz exposes Berto straight up! In my opinion Ortiz is a better technical fighter than Berto. Personally I never really was impressed with Berto's performances. Although he has shown some improvement, I believe Ortiz has shown some too (aside from the peterson fight)
Ortiz could take this one and end up near the top of the ww division, but he better be ready to take some leather, without having to reconsider his career choices. THIS IS BOXING MOTHER****ER!!!
I would be happy he saved his career(for the time being)but I would not think much of the win..But that's cause I don't think much of Berto tbh,but if he wins he could at least put himself back in a good standing(with me at least)and he could have somewhat of a decent career..A L and he is done I hopes he knows that..
Ortiz is never gonna go back to 140. He has outgrown that weight. He has always been a 147 fighter, IMO. Roach had said this in '09.
I don't think he outgrew the division. I think dude doesn't want to fight Khan, Maidana, Bradley or Tszyu (wait, what year is this?)
Maybe he sees the flaws in berto, and berto has been rocked, so maybe he thinks he can make a run at welterweight, the division has softened up a bit.
Its actually a good fight for Ortiz if you think along the same lines as reed. If he wins he's a stud again, and then clearly jww was too small. If he loses, then he's fighting in a weight class too big and can jump back down and try to rebirth his career there.
Either way, this is one of the most intriguing fights this year, i wonder why its not getting much press...
It all depends how be wins for me. I need too see Ortiz taken into deep water before I jump on the bandwagon. I've seen the kids skills and there is no doubt there, but we al know where the doubt lays with him.
I'm looking fwd to this fight big time and I'm not a fan of either fighter, but this could the springboard one of these guys needs and one is going home, should be good

if ortiz wins, it means that berto is a hypejob.
I must be alone in thinking this fight cant break Ortiz.
I cant see him winning, he isnt favor to win... he is expected to lose...
To me it just means WW is too big for him and he needs to stay at JR ww.. not that he sucks.
