Abner Mares vs. Joseph Agbeko
Forget about Haye vs. Klitscko, forget about Pacuiao vs. Mosley, forget about ever fight you wish could happen.
Mares vs. Agbeko is the fight you want to watch. Mares and Agbeko “fight of the year” It very well could be. This fight will be an epic bout between two outstanding Boxers
Abner Mares 21-0-1 vs. Joseph Agbeko 28-2-0 April 23rd live on Showtime.
This fight is the championship fight of Showtimes Bantamweight Tournament and for the IBF and WBC bantamweight title’s, Also on this night we will see Yonnhy Perez vs. Vic Darchinyan
This is the perfect match-up, both fighters have fought and beat Vic Darchinyan, both have fought and in most eyes both won against Yonnhy Perez, Mares was given a draw in his bout with Perez. This bout is just what boxing fans need. The winner will most certainly go on to fight Nonito Donaire. but lets not get ahead of the game.

Donaire is the best bantamweight out there, now, But Mares and Agbeko will surely have their names up there with his, if this fight planes out like its expected to. 12 rounds of of excitment,12 rounds of boxing at its best. Agbeko has the stronger chin of the two, but Mares has the speed.
Both fighters throw a tune of punches. This is one of the most even fights on paper and in ring generalship we have seen in a long time.
I have to go with youth and speed on this one, after watching Mares battle Perez and Darchinyan, (even thought Agbeko did the same) I think he can pull out a win in this fight with his amazing hand speed. Agebko has the power to put Mares down, but as we have seen before, Mares has the heart to get back up and win.
Mares was down and hurt against Darchinyan, Mares got back on his game and returned the favor and dropped Darchinyan late in the fight, and won by SD. paving the way for this fight with Agbeko.
Agbeko fought Yonny Perez in the first round of the tournament, a rematch of the epic fight they had a year earlier, this time Agbeko beat Perez in just about every round, leaving no dout this time around that he was the winner.
Abner Mares has had issue’s with his trainers in the past. Agbeko is an unorthodox fighter just like Darchinyan, who gave Mares problems early in their fight. Mares was able to adapt. and land some great punches on Darchinyan. But Agbeko is younger and faster then Darchinyan. Can Mares adapt to Agbeko’s style, or will Mares set the pace. either way this is one fight, we should not miss!!
Vic's right hand is not great by any stretch, but when he uses, as he did in the Mares fight, he's far more effective, even if it's just to paw. By the same token, I do not think Agbeko's left hand is that great either. Better than Vic's though IMO. Also, Vic looked far better in the Mares fight. He's was smarter and his technically better (though I thought both Vic and Agbeko looked sloppy in their fight). Agebko can fight on the inside though, Vic not so much.
The thing is, if Agbeko is having trouble from long range because Mares is using his speed to get off first, then he might have to come forward.
I'm not convinced Mares is that much faster, but he might be. it's hard for me to judge watching their fights.
vic has done his best to become a better boxer, he's just not busy enough and can't get enough respect against the elites at 118.
i thought the scores were too close in vic-agbeko 1. but they STUPID FN CAMERAMAN WAS STANDING IN FRONT OF ME for 1/4 of the fight. Had to rewatch at home.
vic is also far less busy and has no right hand to speak of. plus agbeko's D is light years better than vic d's.
i don't see agbeko having to come forward a lot in this fight, which will work to his advantage if he can avoid having his ribs busted up. he'll probably press or allow himself to be sucked into mares type of fight for a few rounds at least (as is his tendency), but I'm hoping he stays disciplined enough not to.
he doesn't want to fight mares' fight, with the guy with better combos (which used to be better to me in like in his perez fight) and a longer reach like that. if he fights mares fight, he'll be right there for him.
i agree mares wasn't hurt.

I'm the exact opposite for the same reason- skills. Good fight, a true pick 'um fight to me, I can see either guy winning.
if donaire beats the winner and goes up, do you think it would be a bit ch move of juanma to wait for el ciclone and donaire to battle it out and sit on the sidelines?
golden boy should sign gamboa
There are some that say JuanMa avoided Caballero, I don't know. I thought JuanMa taking on an old, undersized Rafa was a bit cheesy because I knew the outcome in the end even though I thought Rafa did well while he was in there.
JuanMa needs to fight Gamboa, that's his big money fight because he can't afford for Gamboa to lose against Donaire. Either guy losing would hurt their pockets at this point.
I don't really think Mares was hurt against Darchinyan, it was more of a flash KD more than anything IMO. He took a lot of Vic's clean left hands well, a combination of Vic not having the same power at 118 and Mares have a solid chin.
Vic is far more awkward than Agbeko and is a southpaw to boot. Agbeko does employ a lot of constant upperbody movement, he's got a this sort of herky-jerky type rhythm to it IMO. Mares will have use his very good body punching to negate it.
I'm still making my mind up on this one, but when Agbeko comes forward he's for more open to be countered as his tends to lunge in a lot. His punches get wider as well. That's something that jumps out at me.

Ohhh, I thought it was YOUR writeup and then you titled it inaccurate :lol1:
nah, i'm far too busy bumping in and out of nonsense threads to spend my time on her in a worthwhile manner. i have to get SOME work done.
I think Agbeko has the awkwardness to beat Mares but if you look at them skill for skill, I think Mares is the much better boxer all the way around.
Mares can counter punch as well as go forward. Plus I think he will have a slight speed advantage and I love the way he punches in combos. Agbeko tends to set up his combos by pot shotting from the outside.
Either way I agree, it's a great fight and Agbeko is one tough mother fuker. I am picking Mares in this one because I think his skill will win him out in the end.

I think Agbeko has underrated skills, awkwardness, and versatility that Mares won't be able to handle.
I didn't know Mares had a big reach advantage though.
Should be a helluva fight, I like it way more than berto-ortiz. at least these dudes have fought some comp.

not sure if mares really has a substantial advantage in speed. a little bit maybe but it won't be a deciding factor for this fight. mares best weapon really is his body punching and constant pressure. but i like what i saw from agbeko last time out. he made some changes to his style...he's a little bit more patient and worked on his counterpunching and overall boxing skills. i like agbeko in this matchup.
i think agbeko has the overall game to make adjustments, not sure about abner.

Been looking forward to this fight for so long.
It only got announced a few weeks ago it will be on UK Television.
Can't wait. Winner fights Donaire!
I'm rooting for Agbeko!
I absolutely love that Donaire is waiting for the winner of this fight. Very manly.
If Donaire looks spectacular like he can against the winner, and he decides to go up, Arum's dude will wither be forced to fight each other or the detante has to end or they look like straight bit ches.
Me too, war bantams!!!!!!

Mares is always in a Foty candidate. WAR Mares!!!
That he is, no one can call him a boring fighter. He's a monster, he's got enough subtlety to his banging that he makes dudes miss a lot in exchanges, but this fight will be with a different animal. Vic was awkward, but not throwing all that much.
True that Walt. I think mares is more well rounded than Agbeko but you can't understimate that toughness. Agbeko has the toughness of a real champion. The untouted skill? No. But definately that Rocky-esque(movie) toughness.
I won't make predictions and I am not gonna pull for anyone to win. This should be a good fight. I hope the winner of this can see my boy Nonito.
