I never really use the word "prime".
If anything I looked at it as who is peaking or at the height of their career (absolute best).
Since Morales just fought, I will use him. Against Manny he wasn't at the absolute height of his career or peak (It was 122-126), but was still a top 3 SFW when he fought Manny in the first and second fight. He wasn't shot, but people use the phrase "past prime" to diminish other fighters wins.
While I think it's great to beat guys at their absolute best, it's very hard to get opponents who are at the height of their career. Fighters only fight at most 2-3 times a year, and a lot of the times when you finally do get around to a guy, due to the business/politics of the sport, a good chance will be that they may have put on a sub-par performance, had an excuse come up as to why they weren't at their best, or maybe even gotten beat.
Martinez is in this bout as the Kirkland, Lemuiex and Pirog bouts all looked great a few weaks ago, but know you will have a ton of excuses to discredit future wins over those guys if Sergio faces and beats those guys. Martinez could control that and in just weeks, if not days, those future fights lost a lot of steam.
how can you get better and not be prime???thats an oxymoron
You're must be a moron if you still think Pac is prime....
If you really think Pac is still prime, why don't you make a thread including a poll if Pac is still prime or not.
Sergio Martinez
Carl Froch
Robert Guerrero (as long as he doesn't get ever better)
Left Donaire off, because who knows how far he's going to take that set of skills.
I read alot of prime/shot/past-prime arguments all over this place, so can somebody please name me which fighters are prime at this very moment?
- Bradley
- Berto
- Donaire
- Gamboa
- Manny Pacquaio
- Froch
- Ward
- Bute
- Martinez
i would say all of these guys are in their primes. Manny Pacquiao is prob in the last year or two of his prime years.

I just noticed you didn't add Martinez in your list. Although he's 36, he's defenitely prime in my book. He's a late bloomer and obiously in his best right now, I'm surprised you didn't list him up there.
true i thought bout that....
martinez
khan
bradley
donaire
maidana
bute
froch

I just did :D and was also surprised Larry didn't mention him especially with a Martinez avatar.
Yeah the man is in his prime and has a few years left in him. When do you think he'll start to decline? I would say at 39 or 40
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Martinez yet he's 37 now but he's in his prime Donaire also.

manny is prime..hes at his best now
I don't think he is, he's had some tough fights against much bigger opponents and is 33 years old.
Khan I agree with, this is his time. Ditto Bradley.
Too many to list so I'm going to limit myself to 10 :lol1:
Andre Ward
Carl Froch
Nonito Donaire
Joseph Agbeko
Juanma Lopez
Timothy Bradley
Amir Khan
Marcos Maidana
Brandon Rios
Lucian Bute
Not sure about Berto though, since he's still unproven to me and need to face tougher competetion like some of the guys you mentioned. He's undefeated but IMO he's not prime.
I was gonna say Maidana, but he obviously needs to improve his technique, as shown in his last fight.
bertos the best hes gonna be imo
lol a pacquiao being prime at 33 yrs old and all of those he fought are not prime..
if any pacquiao has the excuse of being shot coz of too many wars he had..
manny is prime..hes at his best now
