the other day I got to watch Whitaker - Mcgirt again, what a great fight, when watching sweet peas style I thought to myself he would be a force today, his style was one of a kind, ahead of his time, I see some sweet pea in Mayweather. lets not be biased, but upfront. Who today from Lightweight to super Welter could beat Sweet Pea, poll following.
To people saying 'Pacquiao's workrate' would give Whitaker trouble...tell me what his workrate was against Marquez. When youre in there wiffing punches to air its much more tiring than hitting a guard, especially when there are counter left hands smacking you in the face. Do you people even watch boxing?
not to mention Whitaker has landed over 400 punches 3 different times...one of which was over ATG Azumah Nelson. This myth about Whitaker having a low workrate needs to end.
Roy Jones was considered P4P #1 at the time. Do you know why? Because, Whitaker was clearly past it. Do you know how you could tell Whitaker was clearly past it? Because, all you had to do was see his fights against Rivera and Hurtado to know that Whitaker was at the down slide of his career.
Is obvious that you do not know WTF you're talking about.
You came in too late.
He already made a swift exit. :lol1:
I actually have a relevant question to this topic. Most of us are in agreement that Pacquiao gets embarrassed by Whitaker, his style is poison for Pacquiao. Let's say Pacquiao and Mayweather actually fight. Is there any type of performance Pacquiao could put on vs. Mayweather, who while not fighting Whitaker's style is a defensive counter puncher, that would change people's minds on that?
of course, if he works from the outside and looks so quick that floyd can't really stop him or figure him out. tko wouldn't hurt
Yup, DLH just outworked Whitaker, who didn't do anything.
Whitaker didn't do anything? You didn't watch the fight at all did you? An old Whitaker made a prime Oscar look silly at times.
So he suddenly old, because he supposed to humiliate young kid, but was beaten himself?
First of all he was not humiliate it you dumb fuck. A lot of people thought he won the fight. Watch the fight, or at the very least read about it before speaking on it.
Second, Whitaker was considered past prime due to his performance prior to Oscar against Rivera and Hurtado.
So you're saying excuse for DLH beat Whitaker is Pernell's age. But if Khan beats Mayweather, then Khan is just better than Mayweather. Maybe DLH beat him because he better.
Mayweather parties everyday, I really doubt that he doesn't drink. He takes long vacations, but still in very good physical condition even at 34. Both Mayweather and Whitaker have similar boxing styles, which can keep them for a long boxing career.
Look at Floyd performance in his last 2 or 3 fights, compare that to Whitaker performance against Rivera and Hurtado going into the Oscar fight. Do you not see the difference?
Go tell your excuses to somebody else. So P4P King Whitaker was old, semiretired, could've been beaten by kids, then why the hell he was regarded as the best boxer in the world????? I can accept age excuse if Hopkins loses to Pascal, but if you can be P4P#1 only if you are at your best.
So you are saying P4P #1, the best active boxer in the world, recognized by the most respected rankings, historians and experts, Whitaker was shot, washed-up and couldn't beat prospects????
Even if Martinez being P4P #1 at 38 would lose to prospect like Lemieux, that would be pretty embarasing.

Well if even 22 years old DLH beat prime Whitaker, who was P4P #1 at that time, why can't any solid WWs beat him?
So if 34 years old Mayweather loses to 24 years old Khan, then would you say Mayweather was too old?
OMFG, I can't believe there are posters this stupid.
Instinto, you obviously don't know WTF you're talking about. So please don't give your opinion on the matter. Just sit back and read, do some research, and then give you opinion on the matter.
We're talking to a guy who thinks DLH was a prospect in 1997. :lol1:
Which is why age doesn't always determine much.
People tend to say that, I have heard it a few times on here, it's quite hilarious.
He was a 3 weight champion, fighting a long list of solid opposition, obviously in that same year he became a 4 division champion.
To say he was inexperienced against Whitaker is plain silly.

Roy Jones Jr was P4P #1 in 1997. No?
Regardless to that, Oscar was ranked higher than Whitaker P4P after his win over Chavez at Jr Welterweight and Whitakers poor showing Vs Riviera.
Did you not see Whitaker's 2 fights with Riviera and fight with Hurtado? 3 fights which showed Whitaker clearly was past his prime??? I guess not.
Whitaker was not in his prime when he fought Oscar. Clear as day.
No, he was past-prime because he was clearly past-prime by that point in his career. It's just further testament to his Greatness that he could be so competetive and quite arguably win the fight.
Find someone knowledgeable who disagrees with that assessment, and good luck.

I thought that fight was going to be the change of the guards. It wasn't and I had Whitaker winning that fight
Stupid comparison. 4 different fighters, people age differently.
Mayweather is closer to his prime now than Whitaker was then.

If Manny could somehow completely neutralize Mayweather's jab, and manage to throw over 800 total punches while connecting on at least 25% and still manage to win he fight then it would slightly change my thoughts on a fantasy matchup with Sweet Pea.
No not at all. If that were to happen I would just say Kahn was the better fighter on that night. However, Mayweather and Whitaker have/had VERY different lifestyles that made the prime windows of their careers much different. Mayweather doesn't smoke, doesn't drink, and trains year round...Whitaker on the other hand well..he liked to hit the "slopes" from time to time:)

You think Pea was prime when he fought the younger, bigger DLH.
Which means you've never seen a prime Whitaker and don't know what he fights like.
But even a '97 Pea would dissect Manny like an insect in science class, end of message.
