No flame wars, and to disclose, I like Pacquaio, big fan. Anyways, I just wanted to know the board's general feelings about Team Pac requesting 8oz gloves in a 10oz glove division. I've just always been bothered that they got to use 8oz gloves, which greatly benefited Pac, and led to the brutal slaughter of Margarito.
This has nothing to do with the catchweight, that is a debate for another thread. This has to do with the fact that they wanted lighter gloves in the divisions that require the 10oz.
If he had the 10oz gloves, the punches wouldn't have been as profound, and they would have been heavier, which would have slowed him down a great deal. So in short, do you believe that demanding and getting 8oz gloves put Margarito in a severe disadvantage, which could have constituted as a form of cheating, or that Margarito, like Cotto had no choice to but to bend to the rules since they were the B side and that is that? So that it was in essence fair game.
Poll to come
how is that cheating?
r u retarded or just trolling, if obviously they had to stop him from taking it, what does that make it fool, I wouldn't care if he took it or not, he would've gotten the ass whooping of his life anyway, just stating that was a big issue before the fight, dont troll fool....
2 ounces might not seem like a lot, but for boxing, its a great deal. And no, if you've read the thread, I've made perfectly clear, that Margarito was going to lose no matter what. He's not in Pac's league. I just think that Margarito was at a more competitive disadvantage because Pac essentially kept his speed and power from the lower weights and it allowed him to just punish Margs. Margs has those 8oz gloves, but he was never going to have time to let off punches.
When I spar at my gym, we use like 12 oz gloves and I certainly don't have the speed and power that I normally wouldn't have if I use 8 or 10oz gloves. After a few rounds, those ounces of weed start to add up.
There is a reason why bigger weight classes don't use 8oz gloves, it would murder the other person.
Just food for thought
the logic here seems very flawed... both are using the same gloves, how can one murder the other?
An 8oz gloves favors the heavy hitter, in this case Margarito.
Why are we making these exchanges with the TS over a non-issue?
A reasonable response to a reasonable question
Would you agree or disagree that if he wore 10oz gloves that he would have been less powerful and those punches would have been a little less destructive?
Margarito wearig 8oz glove while being bigger, stronger...have a lot of advantages too, let alone he would be "faster" though he is slow in the first place.
As if Margarito's punches wouldn't hurt Pacquiao at 8oz - I don't know what is your logic here both fighters used the same gloves.
Your speaking outside the scope of the argument bro.
Again, the question is, did the 8oz gloves put Margarito at competitive disadvantage when the standard use is 10oz in the Jr. MW division, thus allowing Pac keep his trademark speed and power.
Seems like a simple question...
I think you're fixated on Pacquiao...Margarito wearing an 8oz while being bigger and stronger is one thing you may seemed to overlook. Weight differences of 17 pounds play a big role there too obviously while Margarito is vastly taller too.
What's cheating in here? I don't see any cheating going on?
Let's take a look at it from Margarito's perspective.
So looking at the brutal body shots and uppercuts that slightly buckled Pac that night...
The TS is saying that the Margarito that was 17lbs heavier than the 148lb Pac would have had a better shot of winning with gloves that had more padding?
Margarito was clean in that fight...he never failed the pee test!
i know he was clean, everybody knows that, but he had to be stopped from taking those substances before the fight, that's all i was trying to say....
don't quote me without thinking about what i'm actually saying....
yea i'm surprised no one had mentioned this in all the fights people have on here about cotto-marg......
if anything is to e discussed about cheating it would have to be the coffee and hydroxicut marg was trying to take before the fight (which is something petty to think of as cheating) but fact is, its not allowed.....
as far as the 80z gloves for cotto-marg, thats something Margarito's camp was pushing for (HMMMMMM!!!!!!!) Cotto wanted to use 10 oz gloves......

Pacquiao doesn't have to cheat to beat Margarito!!! 8 oz, 10 oz, 16 oz pillow gloves wouldn't have saved the mesican from the beating he recieved!!!
Then why request 8 oz gloves?
First you cant consider a request in glove size as cheating unless Pac altered an 8ounce and fought while everyone thought it was a 10oz lol Second it works both ways.. Tony had them too. Pac just wanted wanted something he was used to being that most states require 8oz gloves up to 147lbs. Nevada used to be 10oz gloves anything over 135lbs but they amended that ruled in '08 for Margarito vs Cotto!!

Yeah, sure...but his team wants to achieve crazy accomplishments and in attempting to do so, they know that they have to bend the rules a bit. Pac would still have won but Margs' face would not have been disfigured as much and it would have more accurately portrayed Pac's power as opposed to having Margs looking like he was gang raped.
why are you pretending that pacquiao was the only one that used the 8 oz gloves?
margarito also used those gloves, and as a matter of fact, it is pretty risky considering the huge weight advantage.
not to mention MARGARITO ALSO PREFERS THE 8oz gloves. so i don't know what you guys are bitching about.
you guys are grasping at straws.
If anyone had the advantage of 8 oz gloves, it was Margarito. Manny weighing in at 144 and then 148 by fight night meant he was still fighting within the welterweight division.
Welterweight division and below usually have 8 oz gloves. Junior Welterweight and above have 10 oz. As long as both parties, as well as commissions, agreed on 8 oz gloves for that fight, it was fair.
I agree with this.
Good post
Talk about trying to make something out of nothing. Both were basically welters, Margo had recently moved up to 154 after his layoff. And Pac weighed what a jr welter usually weighs fight night. Ask any jr welter if using 8 gloves in a jr middleweight bout against a relentless puncher like Margarito would be advantageous for them or him. People still don't grasp the reality of what Pac is doing. NO junior welter today, and very few in history would fight a guy like Margarito giving up 17lbs, let alone be able to beat him up like Pac did, no matter what type of gloves they used.
this ^^^^^^^^^
Manny's always wears 8oz reyes, the last time he didnt was against Morales I because of his dumb promoter.
But since the TS is bored, Manny wearing 8oz gloves this time around is considered cheating. Btw, Margarito always petitions to wear 8oz reyes himself.
margo is slow was coming off of a suspension and a brutal ko...fight was a good beat down but was only made to get manny "8th divisional title"
the "8th divisional title" was offered by sulaiman to get the fees.
Nobody is questioning if the use of different sizes would have changed the outcome. Pac was there to win, and Marg was there as a courtesy by Arum.
But if he had 10oz gloves, those punches weren't going to have the laser effects that the 8oz gloves did.
I always just figured that it was an industry standard so to speak that 10oz gloves are for 154+ because the power and size of the fighters there. So requesting 8oz gloves, coupled with the catchweight just made Pac retain his speed and power to totally disorient and brutally massacre Margarito, which may or may not have completely ended his career.
It was decided who would win when that fight was signed pacquiao did not cheat that win was a gift from bob margarito knew what he had to do just take a beating and not throw any real punches in return he gets his license back and a lucrative rematch with cotto its a win win paquiao get a fictional 8th title bob gets payed and margarito keeps his career going ...
