I wouldn't call it fake. It seemed like a genuine injury but misguided. It looked like a pinch of the nerves, much like when u hit an specific area of your elbow and u feel electricity flowing through your arm. That's what it looked like to me and even after the fight, he said he was just fine
His brain short circuited and he use it like an excuse that he hurt his thumb. He would had been screaming in pain how hard they pulled that glove off at the end of the fight
He totally faked it. He took a monster shot and didn't want any further punishment. He's 38, has taken some bad beatings in his career so I think he used his hand as an excuse to quit.
Mayorga's left went over Cotto's left hook, so that couldn't have hurt his thumb.
I think what happened is Mayorga had referred pain.
I saw that sh1t on an episode of House a few weeks ago.

:headbang:
Naw, Mayoroga hurt his thumb. Cotto's left hook grazed his thumb if u look super closely. Apparently it got dislocated from the graze. U can tell that the punch itself didn't affect Mayorga that badly.
I don't think Mayorga hurt his hand. If you look at the replay, you can clearly see his left hand didn't land. Also, he got staggered by Cotto's jab. That goes to show that he was hurt.
Actually he sad that about Forrest too.
And Vargas. It was something like: "Voy a volver a welter, porque este maricón (Vargas) pega muy duro."
"Im heading back to welter cause this guy (Vargas) hits too damn hard."
His brain got rattled so hard that it sent signals to his hand that the thumb was broken.
I think the replays showed that he might have pushed back his thumb a bit, but he saw the incoming onslaught and that at that point, Cotto was too strong and elected not to get ****ed up.
I think the post fight commentary tells you everything you need to know. He said that "that Puerto Rican is strong" and he's never openly said that about another fighter.
Agree with JmH Reborn

Exactly what i think happen.. I think its very possible..

Well, it was either the "chicken walk" or the "dying cockroach". He chose to blame it on his thumb with whatever marbles he had rolling in his head at the moment of impact.
