Click play and the vid will start with Manny Steward talking about a possible fight with Margarito. Shameless Arum takes this opportunity to call Cotto's Papi.
No I get what Stewart was saying. Cotto has to control the pace and force Margarito back with a steady dose of hard jabs and hooks to the body. Can he do it? I'm sure he can, and I'm sure he can't. It all depends on Margarito. Steward has improved Cotto's endurance, so that is a positive.
He may not break that bone, but his face and the bruising he'll get from here on out will never recover. Before the Margarito fight, Cotto's face never took extreme mark ups. Since then, he marks up easy (note the Pac and Mayorga fight). The beating that Margarito took from Pac makes me believe that his face will be soft from here on out. Cotto's jab is one of the most effective and powerful in the sport and it'll have a home all night. I just think it'll cause mark ups and bruising quite early and perhaps take Margarito out of his game.
I said in another thread, I prefer if this fight takes place in September/October time frame, so both fighters can heal more. I'm just concerned now about Tony's ability to absorb damage like he use to.
I thought the same thing after the Mayorga fight. Cotto was marked up at the end of the very first round (above his left brow). When he fought Judah and Mosley he never looked like that. Sure, he got a few scuffs here and there, but he didn't look all red and puffy. Second, Margarito might've gotten irreversible damage to his face. I agree that he may have a big vulnerability to that right eye, where Cotto can use his piston-like jab and left hook. Bones DO heal, but I assume that they become stronger when there are small fractures and minimal damage, not when they completely shatter (like in the Pacquiao fight-in response to Cuauhtemoc-).
The question going into this fight is can Cotto take Margarito's body shots and can Margarito take Cotto's headshots?
I think that Margarito will have his best chances in the final three rounds to pressure Cotto where he tends to fade. I'm not so sure if Cotto will allow himself for that to happen, though. He knows that there is a lot of speculation surrounding the first fight and despite it happening nearly three years ago, the fight is brought up constantly (and would've been brought up constantly even without the plaster incident). I don't think Cotto will fold again like last time, that would be painful and a devastating blow to his confidence from here on out.
Margarito can probably take anything Cotto dishes out, what I'm wondering is whether or not his face can hold up.
Interesting match-up. I can't wait to see it.
right, i'm not arguing what ur aying, but Cotto is improved like it ir not, ur right Steward can't change the WHOLE PACKAGE that Cotto is, but he can damn sure improve on details, footowork, jab, defense, latteral movement, etc...
I saw Margo improved in areas as well JABBING, which was crazy to me, not discrediting him, but it looked like he was forcing the jab, it didn't look natural to him u know? but he was still doing it and u can see from Pac's face that it did have effect, his physical appearnce was awesome, which means conditioning was great as well, and the chin hasn't gone away either....
wish the fight was tomorrow lol
It's going to be an exciting build up but I honestly don't think Cotto can beat Marg, just my opinion. Stewart said it best, he has to force Marg to go backwards, I just don't see that happening.
I also think the mental edge goes to Marg, with the whole wrap scandal and the fact he's beaten Cotto before. I feel like Marg is very confident going into this fight and Cotto will have to fight off some daemons to win.
Simple physics perhaps, Cotto was much smaller in his fight vs Pac than Marg was, his size helped him withstand the punishment...
Honestly man... this seems so simple an observation...
Yep. Overall though, marg has always displayed granite chin when he's conditioned.
If you know me as a poster you know I like Cotto, I don't get into this Mexico vs PR bullsh1t.
Let's be real here for a second, Cotto has been a fighter for 20 years, as good as Stewart is, he isn't going to to change the way Cotto fights. At least not in the championship rounds when his back is pushed against the wall.
The same way Marg isn't going to learn to be slick from Robert Garcia, fighters like Cotto and Marg are too far in their careers to change that now.
Cotto has looked better, but who has it been against? A sub par fighter in Foreman who had a bum knee and Mayorga who has been done for 5 years.
I'm not hating on Cotto, I'm really not I just don't think as a fan of Cotto you should get overly excited about his performances in his last two fights.
As we both know, Marg is a completely different animal than these two.
so true, margo had to resort to plaster to beat him.

When Margarito fought Pac, you can actually tell he had a gameplan, an actual BOXING gameplan, which was jab to try and keep pac on the outside, cut cut cut the ring, and hammer the body, I knew there was no way Pac could knock him out....
Now as far as Cotto's last fight, Not cuz I'm rican, everyone knows i'm not biased, but if people don't see that Cotto looks a whole lot better as a fighter, they're just hating, his footwork looked awesome, THROWING THE RIGHT LIKE A BOMB, defense is greatly improved....
All these are just more factors to contribute to the fight with Margarito... As far as power, I think they have the same amount of power, They both go to the body a lot, it's gonna be a great fight!!!!!!

It was very subtle.
He was more patient.
He circled better, though at times was the same old Cotto. But he showed improvement.
He was using body shots again.
He conserved stamina and held when necessary.
His jab and straight punches were crisp and powerful.
So you think Cotto will break Marg's face like Pac did?
Bones heal, and they actually heal stronger than before they were broken. The reason Marg had his eye socket broke was because he was taking shots and not being able to give any back.
I think you missed exactly what Stewart said and that is, Cotto was forced to go backwards and that took power away from his shots. A fighter loses a lot of power when he goes backwards.
Marg is going to force Cotto to go backwards, he will have the advantage and press the action. It wasn't the case with Pac because Pac has the foot speed and hand speed that Cotto just doesn't have.
I don't see Cotto beating Marg, it's a bad match up.

It's a terrible matchup, lets call a spade a spade.
That said, Cotto can do more damage this time around... Hear me out, perhaps I'm wrong but...
If Cotto can land the same amount of punches on Marg, and lessen the amount of body punches and uppercuts he took from the first fight, say 25% less, could he not pull off the win? The last fight ended in R12, no? Is Cotto's power the same at 154 than 147? What if he has just a bit more pop, not even, let's say it is the same but his extra weight adds some more solidity to his shots, could he not thwart Marg a bit more, remember despite Marg adding weight himself, I'm not so sure this has any effect on punch resistance to the facial area/head...

I think it may be safe to say that Cotto recovered well from the Pac ass whupping and is fighting on and little by little, revamping himself for his second act in his career.
Margarito on the other hand, got his face broken, literally by Pac and only knows how to fight one way. Where Margarito got his face broken is the exact spot that Cotto's jab will land all night as he will try to control the pace unlike the first fight. We don't know if Margarito will be able to sustain much damage anymore.
I think that is the most intriguing aspect of this fight

You could see the mood change on the face of Stewart and Cotto, did you see the way Cotto didn't even look at him when he came and shook Cotto's hand?
I think Marg is so confident against Cotto because Stewart said it perfectly, in order for Cotto to beat Marg he has to make Marg go backwards, I just don't see that happening.
Marg will touch Cotto and Cotto will touch Marg, the difference is Marg can take Cotto's shots much, much better.

Because there is absolutely no proof of Margarito ever using dodgy gloves in a fight.
Cool video also. Nice to see Cotto knows his place.
Knows his place? Arum brought Marg up to the podium to talk what do you expect Cotto to do? stand there and not let him speak.
Sleazy move by Arum.
