If anyone asks about how good prime Camacho was, all you need to see is his fight with Ramirez.
Camacho made a prime Ramirez look like a journeyman in their fight, and it was strange, cause Ramirez, just like Chavez was a pressure fighter. Not to mention he actually beat Whitaker.
At Lightweight, how about Duran, Gans, Ortiz, Nelson, Chavez for starters. Just flat out outclassing him how about Leonard (Benny) and Whitaker.
Poet
none of the above, with the exception of Benny Leonard possibly since I havent seen enough of him to judge, would have 'outclassed' prime Camacho.
following on from the Hamed HOF thread, i just wondered what people thought of Hecter and why he isnt in the HOF.
*Camacho
Hecter Camancho..respected fighter?
All day, Hector was one of kind.. 5 punch combos.. You anit see nuttin like it..
Hec gets my vote.. fuk dat...
PRPP :boxing:
I always saw Camacho as more of the Naseem Hamed/Paulie Malignaggi of his era. He was certainly a very talented and skilled fighter. The amazing thing about him is that even though he's been on the slide since the Rosario fight he always found a way to win. Despite wasting everything on drugs hes still won most of his fights and has never been stopped. He only has 5 losses out of 87 fights, that's pretty amazing if you ask me.
The dude Fraud Gayweather patterned himself after.
You mean Hector Camacho not Hecter Camancho! And Camacho fought every one I doubt Mayweather patterned himself after a fighter that took chances.
the difference being that prime Camacho could have beaten and/or given ATGs at 130 and 135 hell, while Judah...eh...even at his best, I can still see a lot of greats steamrolling him.
I agree I was just comparing the wasted talent aspect of it.
I don't think Camacho was underrated, I think Camacho was kind of a version of Zab Judah in the sense he was a waisted talent.
Camacho let the drugs, women and lack of training be his major faults but I don't use that as an excuse because as I have always said, the mental aspect of boxing is as if not MORE important than the physical.
If you don't work hard, prepare yourself and come ready to fight, that's not an excuse, that's weak being weak minded and lazy as a pro.

I do think prime Chavez would have beaten prime Camacho.
and I do think Chavez and Whitaker were overall better fighters than Camacho.
I just think Camacho in general is pretty underrated.

The thing is, Chavez chin was iron, he walked through much harder punchers jabs and straight shots, not a good match up for Camacho.
He had Whitaker speed but wasn't the slickster and awkward style fighter that Whitaker was. He was slick, don't get me wrong but IMO Whitaker is one of the greatest defensive fighters in the history of boxing.

Camacho was brilliant at 135lbs. he was not pitty pat at all, as shown against Ramirez and Limon.
I think Chavez would have still beaten him at 135lbs since he was excellent at cutting off the ring and in general was a bad style matchup for him, but Camacho was very talented in his prime...almost even Whitaker level.(although certainly not as high as Chavez or Whitaker on an overall ATG level in terms of accomplishments)

Camacho wasn't a B level fighter, he was definitely an A level fighter. I also think the same of Rosario, one of the hardest punchers ever at that weight class.
I just think that me and Poet see Chavez and Whitaker on another level because they were on another level.
Camacho's pitty pat jabs and weak left hand couldn't keep Chavez off of him at 130, 135 or 140lbs.....it makes no difference.

ok, so Camacho beat Rosario, a very good fighter, and Ramirez, someone who deserved to beat Arguello, and yet he is still a 'B-level' fighter?
come on now.

The difference is Camacho didnt hide from anyone like Hamed if thats what you're asking.
Ouch..........
Oh and by the way, Camacho's trainers were Mexican for this and other fights.
Rosario was a very good but not great fighter. Cooney was an example of someone with a great punch who wasn't a great fighter. The point being that a great punch doesn't make you great.
All designations are subjective but I'd rather not cheapen the definition of great by spreading it far and wide.
Watt and Ganigan were never that good and Mancini was marginal: A solid fighter but not even a near-great. Arguello also got KTFO by Pryor, something I seriously doubt would have 10 years earlier. Pryor himself gets grossly overrated.....based largely on the fact he KOed a past-it Arguello. Certainly nothing Pryor did in his career warrents the overinflated regard he gets from people claiming he was some awesome threat to Leonard and Hearns.

You just don't like the fact that I am not agreeing with your vote for the cabbie killer with 100 victories. And since you mentioned Sweet Pea, has Chavez apologized to him for the robbery? You may not like the fact that Camacho was not the same when he fought Chavez, but it does not change that fact. Watch Camacho of old and then watch him once he was committed to the party life. BIG difference kid.
Disrespecting Chavez is to disrespect boxing...
I admit Chavez got a gift draw vs Sweet Pea, something you would never do. The second you said Camacho in his prime "Toys" with Sweet Pea, disqualifies you from ever giving your opinion on anything boxing ever.
Camacho's partying was his own problem, something that happened with a lot of Puerto Rican fighters. Maybe they should have dedicated themselves more in the gym and less at the club....KID.
HOF doesn't equal ATG. Anyone can into the IBOF if they have a sizable fan base. Gatti and Ward will most likely get in. Neither are ATG caliber fighters by any means.....not even close.
Gerry Cooney had an ATG punch.....but was NOT an ATG fighter by any stretch of the imagination.
Ramirez had a good night against an Arguello who was starting to slip.....and still lost. He also got a colossal gift against Whitaker.
Poet
But you rationalize that Arguello was slipping when he fought Ramirez but you can't concieve that Camacho was slipping already (a lost to Haugen).
So in your opinion Ramirez is not a good fighter.
I watch Camacho to see him loose, I didn't like his style or antics. But one thing for sure is the early part of his career he was one of the top fighters and beat good competition
