During an interview with On The Ropes, one of the greatest defensive boxers of all time, "Sweet Pea" Pernell Whitaker, praises Manny Pacquiao by describing him as the best boxer today while choosing not to comment on Floyd Mayweather Jr. Whitaker speaks on various issues, including how he believes he beat Oscar De La Hoya in the 1997 WBC 147lb title fight which he lost on the scorecards by unanimous decision. After the interview, heavyweight boxer Chancy Welliver shares his high opinion of Whitaker by describing him as the greatest fighter in the history of boxing.
And? He wanted the same support that other boxers get from their own, The thing is american arent biased just because you're from the same country, Its difficult to see other countries pick or say anything positive about other fighters who arent from that country especially if they are rivals with one of their countrymen.
when Hatton was high and might over here it was difficult to get a straight opinion from former or active boxers here when he was fighting Mayweather, I admire americans for that because they dont play that shiit.
This is why its easy for an foreign boxer to come over to america and be loved as long as he fights and entertain.
my point was that though you are correct that americans are more open-minded than generally most other races in that they would root for a fighter regardless of nationality, its not true in all cases. As i pointed out earlier, there are americans who still use that nationality BS and floyd is one of them.
that said, though i believe as individuals, americans are generally an open-minded bunch. But somehow, that doesn't necessarily translate to boxing. for example, name me one other non-american boxer other than Pac who has achieved recognition even close to Floyd or dela hoya.
in truth, for some reason or another, its very VERY difficult for non-american boxers to achieve recognition and Pac is simply the exception to the rule.
that may be true to a certain degree but don't forget that even floyd pulled out that nationality BS card, even before he went sheenal and ranted like a lunatic on the net.

He is going to say that anyways he is pissed with always getting asked about floyd, and all the comparisons of him and floyd, after floyd did nick his defensive style though, if there was no sweet pea no Mayweather Jnr like we know him today I think.
Manny and Floyd are both legends of our time, pity Floyd takes so few fights!
Why is this a negative? He spoke the truth, Pacquiao is the best fighter in the world today, it's even makes him great to me because you would never see a Filipino or English boxer saying the samething about someone who isn't from their own country, That would be blasphemy but in America they seem to keep it straight instead of the nationality BS.

Of course pernell thinks pacs the best fighter. He fights everyone and beats them badly which is just about as much as you can do as a boxer.
He has fought all the names and all there is to fight, unlike one particular boxer i can think of.
Well I think it's ambiguous and open to interpretation. The question asked is "What do you think of those guys as fighters?" to which Whitaker replies "I like Pacquiao the best out of all em, personally, myself. He's more consistent as a fighter, getting in the ring, competing. He's the one that stands out." Could be interpreted in a few different ways:
1. Whitaker likes Pacquiao the best in terms of entertainment value.
2. Whitaker likes Pacquiao the best in terms of overall skill, consistency, resume and other factors.
From the very few statements he makes on the issue I think Whitaker doesn't clearly define which of the two interpretations is the valid one, or indeed if both apply. It's indeterminable I guess, unless he gets pressed further on the issue in a future interview? It'd be interesting to get clarification on that one.
IMO if Whitaker thought Floyd was more skilled and the better boxer he would have mentioned that.
You ask any boxing fan the same question and they would tell you who they thought was the best fighter.
Did I miss something?
How does "I like Pacquiao best out of all of em" = Pernell Whitaker Calls Pacquiao The Best Boxer Today? He wasn't talking about their skill, he was talking about who he liked. BIG DIFFERENCE!

Not suprised...
I think Pernell had an ego thing with Floyd since certain ppl feel Floyd is better or better defensively than Pernell...
I could understand him liking Pac, Pac is active...Floyd runs his mouth but won't get in the ring...
I may be in my own boat but I think Pernell is overrated by many...great fighter and HOFer? yeah...top 10 ATG? No way...
That guy at the end is nuts if he thinks Pea is the GOAT...
Floyd, in many interviews, declared himself a better defensive and better all around fighter than Whitaker and every other ATG. Pernell heard that and it is a challenge to his own ego. Not many of the great fighters from the past like Floyd and they only compliment him begrudgingly.
Or maybe he just prefers Pac. He gave his reasons why he likes Pac.
why would anyone be mad??what is this grade school??people are entitled to thier opionions
Unfortunately NSB is most of the time like grade school.
