Bob Arum on Oscar De La Hoya: He’s ‘One of the Stupidest Guys I’ve Ever Met’
By Larry Brown February 24, 2011 - Posted in Boxing
So Oscar De La Hoya exited the ring for a career in promotions and created Golden Boy which has taken off. The promotional company represents a high percentage of the best fighters in the world and they’re responsible for putting on some of the best events we watch.
Before Golden Boy existed, Bob Arum and Don King used to be the only real competition when it came to promoting top fighters. Now, De La Hoya’s gang seems to scoop them up. Given that background you know that anything rival promoter Bob Arum says about Golden Boy comes out of bitterness and anger. So take the following quote served up to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel lightly with a chuckle.
“ no background in boxing,” Arum told the paper. “They rely on Oscar, who’s a dummy. Oscar is one of the stupidest guys I’ve ever met. I’m just saying what it is. The guy is really not smart. Forget just ‘not smart.’ He’s not just even average.”
Like I said, it’s complete bitterness from Arum, but the smack was so strong we had to share. Keep in mind that Arum will say just about anything to make himself and his people look good.
We’ve already explained why these comments shouldn’t matter to you because of their rivalry, but I will point out that De La Hoya is pretty darn smart because he took advantage of a major hole in the marketplace — promoters boxers could trust. And I’d say that the hundreds of millions Oscar has taken home proves he has an excellent business sense.

man this rivalry is getting outta hand. and i think arum is taking entirely too far with comments like that. that goes beyond business imo. not too tactful imo.

BoB Arum has digested stronger comp then dlh and his shot to sht fighter line up.
Arum has been around alot longer but nowadays your comment is null and void
Whenever I watch the Simpsons, and See Mr. Burns, he always reminds me of Arum. Or is it the other way around? :lol1:
Like they say though, there are lots of snakes in the grass. Arum is just one of the visible ones. Schaefer was one also, but has gone into hiding under the same Rock as Haymon. Co-habitation!
I met Oscar twice, having a good convo with him one time. He didn't come off as anywhere near stupid. I met him when he was having a book signing, and we got to hang out with him for a few back stage.
Very nice dude, definitely intelligent and very humble for a person of his stature. Arum is a *** of the first degree, he's insulted everyone in the sport and has said some incredibly ignorant things.
and how many fights does shane have left??? and are we forgetting floyd, bhop??? and say wat u want about canelo but hes the most hyped up n coming fighter outta mexico. they also pretty much dominate 140lb ranks and the roster in the higher weight classes as well. dont get lost in the vitrol. golden boy has a great stable of fighters.
arum's stable is probably better because of manny, donaire and cotto. but other than those two, goldenboy seems to get along with the other promoters better and they actually make a lot of good fights.
The same could be said about the fighters in bold too lol.
Lol, this brings it back. My how times have changed. But I guarantee u Arum still thinks Oscar's dumb. Still. Goes to show why Schaefer says what he says about Oscar and arum
why?? you still consider oscar?... you don't know shane??...
who do you think are their main fighters?? canelo? khan?... well.. thats weak...

Oscar just needs to keep his mouth shut because he always ends up sounding like carpet salesman off the side of a highway. He should just hire someone to handle all media operations and just be happy that his nickname is still the company banner. The dude is a joke.
Oscar is borderline retarded. Look at his fight against Pacquiao. He called out Pacquiao who was a lightweight, to fight at welterweight, a weight that he hadn't made in like 10 years. And look what happened, he got so embarrased that he had to retire from the sport.
He also was dumb enough to wear panties and fishnet stockings and pose for camera. He literally has no credibility and GBP is losing more money than their bringing in. The only reason its still afloat is because of HBO and Mayweather. But HBO has to cut back on its boxing budget and Mayweather only fights like once a year and keeps most of that money himself.
main fighters??? who are these main fighters??? shane mosely???

yeah, oscar had a vision to replicate UFC as a model for boxing in which GBP will be the only one running the show...
fast forward to today, GBP's main fighters are either going to Top Rank or seeking free agency... clearly, it is STUPID for oscar to mention his "vision" to the media... while the actual scene is completely not going according to his visions but the other way around...
but yet again, you can be successful even if you're stupid... as for oscar, yeah, he is pretty d@mn successful, but he is stupid as sh!t...

yea lets compare oscar dlh to paris hilton. no, he had a vision for his promotional company and he made it happen. no matter who he bought in or who really runs it, he made it happen. and dont give me that ish it was nonexistant b4. thats the point!!! it grew to be the biggest promotional company this decade when it didnt even exist last decade. thats pretty amazing.
but the point is, dlh is not stupid. i dont kno how anyone can think he is. and even if he truly was, arum shouldnt be going out of his way to keep attacking other promoters. that isnt good for boxing and i dont get how some of u guys even agree wit it.

Oscar's twitter acount dosen't make him look like Einstien ether.
I'm sure he's not that dumb.
he seems to have some basic businsess sense.
Cause he has Shaffmeister to help him make some of these decisions.. Oscars a fruitcake..
arum is king scumbag, dlh isn't so much on that level yet.
both need to **** off if they continue this bickering though, its really going to hold up good potential fights...

he knows his business i would say. golden boy grew exponentially at the turn of the century. thats not luck and thats not stupidity.
Yes it grew "exponentially" because it originally was NOTHING. Whatever Oscar did in promotions was because of the way that Top Rank built him up. The same with Mayweather.
In actual fact Oscar is not that smart, and shows it from time to time. His most glaring error was in trying to copy Don King (what he did with Rahman when he stole him from Cedric Kushner who brought him to the title) by grabbing Manny P. straight off a 16 hour flight when he was fainting from fatigue, keeping him further for a couple of hours over a meal he didn't want and signing him to a contract with a $250,000 cheque, (returned) which he MUST have known was no good since Manny was still under contract to Top Rank and had every intention of renewing with them.
It was very thoroughly thrashed out in the news reports and I think it went through prelim court hearings as well.
That was only ONE. He tells a lot of genuine lies, like all the ones about the supposed Mayweather deals goign on to fight Manny P. He contradictee himself several times there, switching every few days, and eventually was exposed, as was mayweather himself, by Greenburg, the HBO chief of Sports, who stated that there was definitely negotiations going on through him, supporting Arum's assertions..................................
Well I suppose that Promoters in general have little shame, but Oscar seems to have none, and his ingenuous "baby-little kid smile" doesn't really work, although he seems to think it does.
Still I think that Arum is a bit irritated more than usual with Oscar over something none of us have any way of knowing about.
