I've seen a couple references to this fight today, and I was surprised to see that several posters actully hold this fight in somewhat of a high regard. So, how do you rate Joe Calzaghe's win over Roy Jones and why? Poll to follow, please discuss :flirt::boxing:
roy was ranked in the top10 bcuz the title organizations are all about money and he has a big name, but any fan with common sense knows he wasnt amongst the 10 best 175lbers in the world.
chad is a beast, he had an of night against pascal but he will be a legend one day. even if u dont think hes that good u cant seriously believe he was an easier fight for joe than roy.
He was ranked in the top 10 at Ring Mag as well pal. Name 10 better 175lbers at the time. Its not like it was a stacked division.
I think Chad is an excellent boxer but "killer" is probably the last word I'd use to describe him. He'd just come off being battered round the ring by Glen Johnson. HBO werent calling for that fight. It was Pavlik or Jones
There is so much wrong with this post, I dont know where to begin.
Roy was ranked in the top 10.
Chad Dawson a killer??? :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

LMFAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
WTF does that prove? Joe says it,
it must be true?
seriously, what did that video just prove?
lmaffaoooooooooo.
So whats your source for thinking Joe had no interest in them?
I'll wait...
but as soon as roy jones jr. started getting KTFO & both fighters where in their 40s joe started having interest in them.
good to know.
You could also put it this way, As soon as Roy had nothing left to lose he wanted a payday against Calzaghe.
its a disgrace to boxing when a reigning world champion and top p4p fighter takes on a completely washed up corpse of a fighter who isnt even ranked in the top10 of the damn division.
especially when he won the title with a controversial decision his last fight and had a killer like bad chad willing to fight him too. the question isnt how much the roy jones fight helps calzgahes "legacy", its how much it hurts it. i say alot.

all you got to ask yourself is this,
roy & bernard knocked down joe when both were shot past prime & in their 40s.
Imagine if they were prime...
Jones and Hopkins had no interest in fighting Calzaghe in their primes and Calzaghe had no interest in them.

To me nothing special, I would have love to see this fight when RJJ was in his prime, Joe C saying he wouldnt have beaten RJJ in his prime makes me doubt why he doubt himself.
he never said that

I think that's very fair.. But several things stand out.
- You can give him an A on performance, but that could still equal an utter dud in terms of adding to his resume.
- Is that really the sort of fight to end your career on? It sort of suggests Calzaghe considered that bout memorable or note worthy..
- A shot to sh*t RJJ knocking him down in the first round is a real blemish on the performance, and if anything a possible indicator of how a more game RJJ could have delivered.
Uh, lots of fighters take on a no name soft touch in their last bout to easily secure a victory and ride off into the sunset.
So you're really saying Joe, who is nearly 40, needs to face a young, prime champion for his last fight?
Who does that?
Jones putting him down in the first and refusing to go down was worth it, terrible win, Hopkins should have got a rematch but Jones did better than expected honestly.
Not sure of the weight, Drew, all I know is that Zag started moving up to avoid the fearsome Moby. Someone in NSB told me.
Zag's mobility and speed would have made it hilarious... the only thing that Moby can hit is the bottle.
Assuming you're referring to a come forward 1D bottle.. Nothing to complex in flavor or recipee.
Joe can't get credit for wins. Jeff Lacey was the next tyson if everyone remembers, Joe exposed him, then all of a sudden, no credit for Joe cause lacey was a bum.
there is no balance on these boards with Joe, he's either the greatest man to ever lace them up, or he's a euro bum that only fought easy competition.
Anyone who sincerely voted for great or even good win should be permenantly banned from this website.
Definately, this website would be alot better if we'd all just agree on one opinion for every fight and every fighter. Debate just ruins forums.
I voted Good fight, but i also wanted to Vote meaningless. I think it was a good win and a meaningless fight.
Before the fight, I was unsure who'd win. Jones had appeared to have slown down, but also wasn't exposed as "Shot" Calzaghe showed us he was, Danny Green confirmed it.
The knockdown in the first round is also meaningless, hopkins dropped calzaghe early, I suspect Calzaghe was touchable in the first couple rounds, maybe he didn't warm up properly, or he was losing a step as well. I think Roy needed to capitalize early, and didn't.
B-hop didn't either, because every little thing anyone does to Bernard seems to bother him. Which concerns me, I don't know if he just plays that up, or if somethings not right with him.
Either way, Had Calzaghe let jones hit him a bunch in the later rounds, and made it look close, everyone would be calling the fight epic, and saying jones got robbed. But Joe embarassed jones, so the fight was a dud, an overmatched post prime payday.
I think Joe held back, i think he could have gotten the fight stopped, but either a) let jones finish on his feet in some sort of weird i respect you, but i'm also going to showboat, cause thats my thing, (see hopkins fight) or b) Joe's hands are such crap that he couldn't deliever any power punches anymore.
All in all, not a fight worthy of being revisited frequently.
Good win, meaningless win though.
Its a name on paper, but not a fight people will respect him for.
Create a formula that links these two, Drew:
Joe Calzaghe
Personality
I can't do it without involving an entirely different person. Joe Calzaghe has met Ricky Hatton a few times, Ricky Hatton has a personality.(though I know you don't like his very much) or uh.. Joe is the son of Enzo Calzaghe who has a personality. On that thought, Calzaghe could probably be viewed as having the exact opposite career path as Naseem Hamed.. And that's not necessarily an insult to either fighter.
