But when the Donaire-Montiel bout is mentioned, Tyson is puzzled.
“Are they good?” he asks. “Excuse me for asking, but I’m not familiar with them. Is it going to be a good fight?”
Tyson is still a fixture at fights in Las Vegas, but says he believes the Ultimate Fighting Championship has surpassed boxing because of the way it promotes and stages its events.
“It’s just more entertaining than going to a boxing match now,” Tyson says of going to a UFC card. “When you go to a boxing match, once the fight is over, you’re waiting for another match and there is nothing going on. We’re just sitting there with an empty ring and nothing is happening. We might as well stand up, because the audience is the show there. If you go to UFC, ‘Boom, boom, da, da, da, da,’ it’s like we’re in a club, we’re partying. Everybody’s passing their drinks and it’s a party.
“When the fighters come out, there’s more music and they build a story up about the fighters and then there is the fight. The fights are awesome – they’re awesome, really – and then, ‘Boom,’ the fight is over and then there is more music. It’s a party and a fight at the same time. I know it sounds crazy, but that’s what it is.”
He chuckles and explains what he’d do if he were a promoter. He clearly has been paying attention, because everything he says makes sense.
THIS.
And the sport can, but few seem to want to.
The UFC went belly up in the 90s after being a fringe sport which was considered 'human c*ck-fighting', was bankrupt and now look at them. Centralized authority and control has made the UFC the marquee brand in fight sports and has exposed Boxing as a circus run by the clowns.
This is coming from someone who considers himself a hardcore Boxing fan with little more than a passing interest in MMA btw.
I'm pretty sure boxing will change its game once Floyd and Manny retire. The closest thing they'd have as a cash cow in America is Donaire who still rather represents the Philippine flag. Then you've got Amir Khan in the UK, Canelo in Mexico, Juanma in Puerto Rico...
Everyone else popular is pretty damn old or shot like Cotto, B-Hop, Mosley, JMM, and the Klitschkos.
Yea UFC has a card every month and they always do good numbers. Overall, Easily surpassing boxing PPV numbers
Boxing needs to step up their game

Nothing boxing can do about that. UFC fans aren't interested in the fighters, they are interested in the 90 second KO. They get maybe 2-3 of those every card. Whenever we get a quick KO (Martinez, Donaire) we act like it's the greatest thing in the world. What do UFC fans call it? Another PPV.
Well its more about the UFC brand.
The UFC card this Saturday is in Australia. The main event is a nontitle fight between two Americans. The event sold out in 30 mins. All 18,000 tickets
I was at the Martinez/Williams fight. You could walk up that night and buy tickets. Plus Boardwalk hall had was half full at like 5,000 people.
Wow, he doesn't know who Donaire and Montiel are. They're the top fighters in boxing and someone like Tyson doesn't know who they are. Something is wrong there.
It's all about promotion. UFC is being promoted the right way, it's still getting a plethora of fans and growing.
I still think one of the MAIN reasons boxing is on a flat-line is because now days people want to see fights in <90 seconds like you said (sweet jesus). They want Blood and UFC delivers it 3/5 times. I don't think kids these days have the patience to sit for 12rounds. My 2cents
Tyson forgot about the wonderful performance by Nelly during Pac-Margarito. The five people there to see him were having a ball. http://i930.photobucket.com/albums/ad148/jonarie/drew.gif
I think that type of promotion will catch on in boxing and it already has in someways. It's shown to be a good way of promoting and gaining fans.
Him not knowing Donaire or Montiel was kind of disappointing though.
