Was that the kind of KO that will forever change Montiel? Can anyone take a shot like that to the dome and ever be the same? Montiel showed incredible courage but I think his amazing fighter's instincts is the sole reason he was able to get up and square up after such a brutal blow.
Is that the type of punch that turns a Champ into a shot fighter? And I dont mean in the fight fan's psyche or opinion...I mean physiologically does that change Montiel's coordinated ability to absorb future punches?
(Think Vargas v. Tito, Taylor v. Chavez Sr., Ali v. Frazier, Castillo v. Corrales, etc etc.)
It's a difficult to re-watch that KO.
C'mon man. You act like Montiel is stalker like Angulo, Margarito, karass, Segura, etc etc. I agree he isn't a counter punch artist like JMM but he is a classic speed/balance fighter who uses distance and instinct as a defensive tool then to tries to beat his opponent to the punch. If that's not cautious I dunno what is. I guess you define cautious as Abraham's peek-a-boo style. Point is Montiel was not reckless, Nonito was just faster and stronger. Montiel did nothing in that fight to give anyone the idea that he would compete in a rematch let alone KO Donaire. That's the Mexican in you talking. Lastly that was as brutal a one punch KO as I've ever seen and I maintain the jury is out on whether or not Montiel will ever be 100%. My hope is that he will, but that's because I want him to be okay.....history shows he might be done.
he was caught by a perfect countershot he didnt expect
montiel should be fine, his technical skills and power should prolong his career
This^^^^^^. Montiel will be fine. I didn't think he was gonna beat the count. He was out cold, eyes wide open, and STILL beat the count. The man has a wealth of fighters spirit to draw off of, hell he took Donaire's follow up shots well, but the KD was so devestating that the ref had no choice but to pull the plug on the fight because he was still effected by the KD.
He has a new spot in my current fav fighters thats fasho.
Courage? Darch fights like a mental midget. Montiel's style comes from Ray Leonard and Ali. Montiel looks slick in the ring...I think he's cautious....then again he thought that his hook was faster and stronger...they went hook for hook and Montiel lost. If anything, Montiel is as brave as any little guy I've ever seen (far from discouraged). But I guess the telling factor will be his next fight...It'll say a lot about the kid and where he's at in his head, his heart, and his faculties.

montiel is mexican so he should be ok.
but we won't know for sure until his next fight.
That punch will always be in the back of his mind when he fights. He will never be as good as he was before the Donaire fight which doesnt really mean much cuz he was always overrated and got exposed tonight.
If he comes back from this and wins an alpha-belt he will start to make noise as a Mexican ATG. And I'd have to agree...very few can come back and be successful after a shot like that. I hope he's okay and he gets back to a title shot..I like him as a fighter...he showed he has heart...now I hope his internal wiring is still good.
Case-in-point: Vic Darchinyan
Suffered a similar fate but turned out just fine. Not the same viscous slugger, but he didn't do too badly for himself after the Donaire loss.
i think that montiel has a chance after this tko loss, normally i'd say hell no, but the way he responded with trying to get up and did get up before a 10 count after being hit like that!!!! he had his bell rung more than having his jaw and nerves shattered.
i hope he's ok, but as devastating as it was, i think he has a chance at coming back and being able to handle his business.
if that shot was square on the jaw, then, no, montiel would never be the same beard wise. and who knows how he can handle a shot after this, but who knows if he didn't have the FIGHT knocked out of him or the confidence, i know he's a life long boxer but that has affects that we will never know......
Who can beat him then and why? None of those guys have Donaire's power and Montiel is faster than any of them. King Kong is the only one that can beat him.
Agbeko,Mares and Perez COULD all beat him. I would like to see Montiel fight the loser of Mares Agbeko fight or Perez but i doubt he will be matched that tough after this loss.
No he doesnt.

All that damage is caused by repeated, sustained blows. One vicious shot like that, while not good for you by any means, probably isn't going to have the same lasting effect. It shouldn't affect his chin too much. Mentally on the other hand...how do you recover from that?
Mentally hes not going to be there anymore.I don't think anyone would.Maybe if you got koed like that when you are younger you can come back. But hes already 31,with lots of fights.
