FERNANDO Montiel has been a bantamweight for over two years now and he has already outgrown the weight division because he is having some weight issues with just days away from his world title defense against challenger Nonito Donaire Jr. at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas this Sunday.
“I didn’t want this fight at 118 (pounds). Fernando should be at 122 already,” the Mexican’s father and trainer Manuel Montiel Sr. told Boxing Scene.
Manuel Sr. admitted his son is a little bit overweight despite the match being just days away.
“It’s not too bad but this is it (but) no more fighting at 118 pounds after this,” he said.
Manuel Sr. believes this will be that last fight of the 31-year-old Fernando in the bantamweight category and his son is planning to move up and dominate another weight class to become the first Mexican to hold four world titles in different weight divisions.
“Without question 122 will be his best weight. Mark my words. You will see when he moves up,” said Manuel Sr. “A rematch (with Donaire Jr.) would have to happen at 122. We will move to 126 before Fernando’s career is over.”
Fernando, who holds the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization bantamweight crown, is one of the five Mexican boxers who have held three world titles in different weight categories.
Like Fernando, the 28-year-old Donaire Jr. is also a few pounds over the limit.
According to the ABS-CBN website, Donaire is four or five pounds over the 118-pound limit.
Donaire Jr. has been limiting to one meal a day with minimal water to cut weight.
“Hard work and a little sacrifice so that I can make weight,” said Donaire Jr.
Donaire Jr. has only fought once as a bantamweight but he scored an impressive fourth round knockout over former world champion Wladimir Sidorenko in his debut in the 118-pound class.
Montiel is 44-2-2 with 34 KOs, while Donaire is 25-1, with 17 KOs.
Montiel last lost to Johnny Gonzales on May 27, 2006 and has won his 11 of his last 12 fights. He earned a draw against Alejandro Velez.
After losing his second fight, Donaire Jr. has won 23 straight
