"I think that's asbsurd. I don't understand what the people at HBO, and I guess they're smarter than me, but I don't understand what the big shots there are doing when they give something in the contract that tells the fighters that if you lose, you're going to get a million dollar fight and another fight on our network if you lose. I've never heard of something like that. To me, it's not good business. To me, again, they're smarter than me, but it doesn't make sense," remarked ESPN2 analyst Teddy Atlas, who took HBO to task for guaranteeing the loser of last weekend's bout between Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander another appearance on the premium cable network worth 1.25 million dollars.
As we now know, the loser of the bout was Devon Alexander, who complained that he was unable to see after an unintentional headbutt in the 10th round forced a halt to the action. Atlas points out that perhaps HBO's decision to guarantee the loser a comeback fight worth $1.25 million, before the bout had even taken place, may have played a role in Alexander's decision to fight through the adversity. "Would you tell your children that if you don't clean up your room, and I know that my kids used to make a mess, if you don't clean up your room, you're still going to get you allowance. Do you think that those shirts would be picked up from the floor," he added. "Again, I'm confused with the big shots at HBO making a deal with a fighter saying, 'You lose, don't worry about it. You'll be back on air. You'll get plenty of money.'"
Does Teddy Atlas have a point? Is it easier to lose your undefeated record if you're guarantedd a minimum of $1.25 million for your next fight?
Yep, 334 people.:haha::haha: Nice prediction that you couldn't even back up with a source. Here's my source, it's ESPN and it was over 6300 people. Your creditability as a journalist is a joke.
LMAO!!!
You didn't know that they handed out free tix to the military/police/firemen that night?
if I was a fighter I'd do my best to stay undefeated...it should be that way, y would anyone want a flawed record?...money is temporary happiness.. a true fighter would regret the L he took for the rest of his life
If they did they would dump Berto and get us about 6 more fights for every one they pay him.
As I said they are not good matchmakers. Besides, the execs I believe want to try their hands on things other than their core competence such as promoting boxers and matchmaking. They got themselves burned for it.
Has nothing to do with these fighters being black. It has to do with HBO paying undeserving fighters millions of dollars and reducing HBO's budget for future fights that may not happen because they blew their wad on fights like Berto vs Joe Shmo and guaranteeing the loser of Bradley/Alexander another million dollar payday.
HBO executives may not be the best matchmakers in boxing but I am sure they know their business. Any business exec worth his salt will never gamble company money on a project that will affect future projects. They embark on projects base on their individual profitability. Your logic here is not use in business, sir.
It's a double edged sword maybe. That deal in the contract probably helped the fight get made and all that. But if one of them underperforms and even quits and people don't want to see them again, then they are forced down our throats when we don't want to see them on TV again at least until the redeem themselves. Not to mention that a big chunk of HBO's boxing budget is going toward a couple of guys who are largely unknown to the casual fan. Ultimately I agree with Atlas. I think the bad outweighs the good.
This isn't to say Bradley doesn't deserve to be on HBO again because he does given that he always looks to fight and is aggressive. But Alexander sure as hell doesn't. But I think both guys got overpaid and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they raised hell which was kind of understandable. Alexander's trainer said they should get paid at least close to what Khan makes given that it was at least the second most important fight to be made in the division.
Im noticing there is a lot of hate for the fact that black fighters are getting paid to fight. Everybody getting mad by bringing up al haymon. If the fighters managers would do their job they would get paid to.

I think in theory it was a good plan but it didn't work out like that because alexander fought like ****, now they will have to put him in there with a name to justify the money, it would have to be zab, or maidana or the berto-ortiz winner. Something like that

Atlas is right, but that's the only way timmah and devon would fight each other and risk their undefeated records.

Atlas is right on this. HBO is dumb for paying bums like Berto, Bradley and Alexander so much when they are all average fighters and will never be a big attraction.
The number 1 guy at 140 is a bum now, please explain further.
Atlas is speaking the truth, HBO is also really dropping the ball giving fighters like Berto a million per fight to fight bums.
Why do you care what a fighter makes? If you want to see better fights, that's fine.
But you are hating on guys because you only make $17/hour.
Just for sh*ts and giggles, we all know Teddy's record at predicting fights. For
today's Super Bowl, he's picking the Packers to win, so be very careful! LMAO!!!
That's true, I bet fighters always hope he picks against them for good luck.
You know there's something wrong when Teddy Atlas is the voice of reason. It's like we're in the bizarro world.

That's why HBO is not in the fortune telling business. They thought they will have a gold mine if they pit 2 undefeated, in their prime American boxers in a unification bout. They couldn't even draw flies in their fight if their lives depend on it.
I hope this unexpected debacle doesn't stop HBO on putting fights like this, they might hit the jackpot one of these days...
HBO stated last year that they're worried about losing the african american base. They're trying to force something that isnt there in trying to make Alexander and Bradley stars at this stage in their careers. It hasnt happened.
Even if Bradley beats Khan, very very few people will know who he is in America.
I think its a good way of getting two fighters, whose managers might make them weasel their way out of a real fight, into the ring.
Its a good plan. Atlas has a habit of not being too smart.
I agree. I think incentives were needed to get this fight made more than it was for Devon to go two or three more rounds and lose inevitably. HBO had already cashed-in and the hyped-up casual boxing fans had seen enough by then.
