The truth is it's not enough for me, it's not enough. What I really wanted was to keep defending the title that Carlos Monzón had. So much is spoken about Monzón, well, I wanted to defend that title until I retire from boxing; try to defend it always. But I have to make due with the Emeritus belt and see what happens in the future. Let´s hope it´s a good thing.
I think everything is being done so that Chávez becomes the champion. I've been saying it for quite a while. I understand that the WBC is trying to do its best for Chávez Jr, for who he is, for being the son of who he is, and for being Mexican, but I'm going to try to accept things how they are and hope Chávez wins the world title so I will be able to challenge him.

The whole thing is a sham. I feel for Martinez because he worked hard for it and has actually defended it against a top tier fighter, only to be quickly stripped for Zbik. Pavlik had held the title hostage for a couple of years with no reprecussions.
If I was Martinez, I certainly would not pay any sanctioning fees and tell the WBC to shove that **** up their asses. He has the Ring title, which carries more prestige anyways. C'Mon Sergio, take command.
Everyone knows Martinez is the best at 160. But he keeps talking about moving down in weight for a payday. But he ballons up to 180+ inbetween fights so its hard to know what weight he wants to fight at next.
He does not balloon to 180+. He was 175 in the first weigh in with clothes and after eating a big meal. And keep in mind that was after a half a year of being inactive. He was not in shape. He only came in at 168 at fight night with Paul Williams. The super middleweight fighters weigh like 185lb pounds at fight night. Close to 20 pounds heavier than Martinez. Martinez is a pretty small middleweight. Not that I wouldn't like to see him at fight at super middleweight, but I see no reason for him not to fight at 154 as well since that's closer to his natural weight.
chavez jr hasnt beaten anyone in the wbc top 10 at 160...he was awarded the silver belt while zbik was still interim champion (technically the same title) and while martinez was full champion. chavez also didnt fight the #2 or in his case being the #2 he didnt even face the #3 in the division
the wbc dont take their own rules as seriously as they should
I agree.
If you notice I pointed that out as one of the problems I had with this situation.
The regional belt thing is one way the get guys to leap frog others in the rankings.
Still they can technically get away with it due to that being apart of their rules (regional belt holders, silver belt holders etc have higher rankings than those w/o belts).
However, they really can't do anything to cheat Martinez outta his rights as emeritus champ. If Martinez calls out Chavez vs Zbik winner, then that fight has to take place. They have no known history of not sticking to their rules when it comes to that, so I can't see them fvkking over Sergio.
IDK, if you ask me.....it should be Lemiux vs Zbik for the title, but what I think will happen is Martinez faces Chavez ($$$ fight) then faces Lemiux ($$$ fight in canada) so in the end it works out for Martinez and the fans.
They just stripped him and gave it to this Zbik guy so Chavez could fight for it? Only one with that kind of pull and power is Arum.
Arum allegedly gets Angulo deported to save Cotto and now he's probably ****ing with Serg for the sake of Chavez Jr?
Cool promoting, bro.
Dude lets keep it real for a second and just realize who is to blame.
If I'm a promoter and I have a top guy on the comeup, don't you think it's wise to make sure his paper work in legit?
Not to sound racist, but with the issues in this country concerning Illegal immagration and undocumented workers, why is Angulo in California, without his paperwork being straighten out.
The only thing that would make this situation more idiotic is if he lived in Arizona and tried to pull this sh1t.
Somehow that's everyone fault except Shaws and Angulo's manager? Please.......
Trying to make up conspiracy theories that Arum to blame for that is just foolish. At what point to does responsibility and accountability take over and we quit playing the victim role?
What are you talking about. Dude has the best belt in that division still as the ring magazine belt has been around longer and has more prestige.

Also since he is emeratus champ, after Chavez faces Zbik, Martinez can immediantly challenge him and if Chavez takes any other bout, or tries to duck him, then he is immediantly stripped and Sergio is made full time champ again.
If the WBC sticks to their rules, then Martinez will be champ again by this fall.
I'm on the fence on this whole situation because in a sense he had to face Zbik, a guy who has been waiting almost 2 years for his shot at the title. Sergio was willing and that would have solved the problem but HBO didn't green light it so he had the choice of either fufilling his mandatory duties and giving up one of his HBO dates, or taking a HBO fight and risk getting stripped.
People cry foul, and I can see that, but at the same time Sergio was Vernons mandatory for almost 2 years and they were gonna strip Forrest if he didn't defend it against Martinez. Vernon was murdered and they handed the title to Sergio, but again his situation and Zbiks are the same and were handled the same.
The only issue I really have is them letting guys like Pavlik get away with long periods of inactivity as well as letting Chavez leapfrog a few guys in the rankings. Other than that.....technically they did the right thing accordingy to their rules.
People may not what to hear that....but whatever, sometimes the truth hurts.

Again it's really a moot point because the WBC actually did him a favor making him emeratus champ.
1. He didn't have to waste his time on a pointless defense against Zbik. He takes the Zbik fight then it will be a bout that's not televised and will probably be for chump change.
2. He keeps his HBO date on top of getting more exposure and more money. Plus what would you guys rather see? Martinez vs Dzinzurik on HBO BAD or watching some youtube highlights, a week later, of him vs Zbik?
3. With his Emeratus status, he gets a shot at the winner in the fall no question asked. They chose not to fight him or chose to take another fight....bam, they are stripped and Sergio is made full time champ again.
4. Lastly, believe it or not, Chavez will actually be a decent payday for Martinez. They can do it in Sept, in mexico, and draw a huge crowd and ratings. As much as people think Chavez is garbage, and maybe they are right, dude just did better numbers, against a bum in mexico, than bradley vs alexander.
IMO, this works out great for Martinez. The only thing I can see going sour is if they someone pull some backdoor sh1t of Sergio. Other than that, if everythng is done by the book, Sergio gets 3 HBO dates, 3 money fights, and his belt back. You really can't beat that if you ask me.
Without the titles fighters would have even more of an excuse to duck him than they already do. Grabbing up ore of the titles forces those that want to be champ to face him. He is one of the most talented fighters in the game but by fighting him you are pretty much guaranteed a loss without a fat payday, so most will try to avoid him.
Look how hard it was for him to secure an opponent for March. Chavez Jr is a ***** and will surely duck him, or he would have manned up and challenged him for the title instead of having him stripped.. i mean, "promoted"

Martinez shows his ignorance by emotionally investing himself in an alphabet belt.
he's been paying WBC sanctioning fees for over two years now...he deserves to keep that belt...imagine investing that much money into something and not getting anything in return..
he's earned it and he's proven himself the best at 160
the belt itself indeed doesnt mean anything but its his
Everyone knows Martinez is the best at 160. But he keeps talking about moving down in weight for a payday. But he ballons up to 180+ inbetween fights so its hard to know what weight he wants to fight at next.
Why would he continue paying the sanctioning fee? WHY? PLEASE ANSWER ME!
It's an alphabet title. He still has the Ring belt. He's the lineal champ! Hopkins -> Taylor -> Pavlik -> Martinez. Why does he need a green belt to legitimize his accomplishment. He's already accomplished it!

The current holder of Martinez belt needs to either fight him to prove who the real champion of that division is or drop it just like they took it and cut the B.S. of trying to hold it for the sake of "legacy" when they didn't deserve it in the first place. How do you hold on to a belt you don't intend to defend let alone fight it's previous owner who was stripped of it? THEN Martinez can "move up". This isn't " I take the belt without me defending it from you while you have to "move up".
You can say that but boxing is not everyday business for a boxer. It is not like you have belt today and defend it tomorrow or next month. You have to wait for atleast three months for them to fight again. It is contact sport. Manny is also a belt holder at 147lbs and will try to defend it against Mosley. Have patience because even boxers are ready it can't be scheduled as easy as you think. Boxing promoters also looking on a good date were people want to spent money. Boxing is business
Fighting Manny or Mayweather is great. Even they cherrypicked or not. They fight against a professional boxer also not just a person with muscle from the street or gym. Boxers train hard to prepare their body and mind in the ring. Nothing to compare to those people trying their hardest to bash boxers whose doing his best to feed his family and have a decent life. Martinez has the capability of beating bigger guys. He can take the risk and cement his own legacy.
Defending the belt is good and moving on higher division is great.
I think Martinez has the capability to dominate the current champion above his current division.
You hit the nail on the head. I feel bad for Sergio. Too good for his own good. And being too much of a threat meant fcuking with other people's "plans" "history" and $$$.
When you really think about it. It's partially due to Floyd. Why? Because others are trying to manipulate sh!t to boost leverage and barganing power against him by adding more titles to their resume they don't deserve.
well floyd always went for 1 belt the wbc. and he always fought the current champion of that title. sometimes not the lineal champion but he still fought the champion. unlike manny who takes whatever belt in that division from whoever. but hey they about money. martinez is about the prestige of being a champion and working hard for it. so to him that belt means a lot.
belts schmelts funny how they sactioning bodies are so quick to strip certain fighters....
aint that some ****?? yet other boxers can hold on to belts, never defend them and they get to keep them without a peep from the organizations. :damnit1:
OMG There are 5 freaking belts.
He has 1 of them. The most meaningful one. Plus he's the lineal champ. Who cares about the green belt. It's just another 1 of 5.
your saying who cares. but obv he does. and hes the champion. you havent earned it so you wouldnt know what it feels like to have it. other guys might treat belts like **** because of how and who they beat for it. but he worked hard and beat the real champion. that belt holds prestieg because of its history. and he was trying to break records. to some people some things still hold value even if its only to yourself and noone else cares
They just stripped him and gave it to this Zbik guy so Chavez could fight for it? Only one with that kind of pull and power is Arum.

because to him being a champion even hold the belt since old times means something. maybe not to you or some other fighters. but he earned that title he aint win it from cherry picking or vacent he won it from the real champion and defended it against a real challenger. he earned it so he want to keep it and make history but its hard when they take it and change it. so he dont complain he just deal with what he has
