I love both boxers for their talents, confidence, and humility. However, I'm going to have to go with Nonito Donaire.
Donaire is the bigger man. If that was not enough, he's also faster. If that wasn't enough, he's also got a pretty decent punch and hasn't been hurt much as a professional, if at all. So, the one area where Montiel might have an advantage in power, it's virtually nullified.
He's also got youth on his side and has brilliant technique with matching footwork.
I see the fight going a couple of ways. However, what seems to be the most sure in my mind is that Montiel is going to struggle in the beginning. He's going to struggle to reach Donaire and will eat a lot of big/fast countershots.
At that point, one of two things will happen....
1. Montiel begins to sense this and come in even more aggressively, and will only eat more shots, though he'll have a better chance this way. Might be his only chance. If he doesn't land something meaningful here, then he will probably lose by way of stoppage due to this tactic.
2. He'll begin to realize that it's somewhat of a lost-cause and he'll start to back up and the fight will in some respects die down. Nonetheless, Donaire will win a wide decision.
Nonetheless, having said all of that, Montiel winning wouldn't completely surprise me. Montiel is a very capable fighter and he has the punch and desire to win.
Donaire.
I'm rooting for Montiel though. I think Montiel has some underrated boxing skills, but I think Donaire is simply on another level of skill. Combined with his size, and this will be a tough fight for Fernando. I hope he proves me wrong though.
All you got to do is watch this short video of the bigger Valdez having his way with Montiel and you'll understand montiel is in for a tough night
Thats a bad example Montiel dominated Valdez in the first round, and Valdez took over in the 2nd. After the 2nd you need to factor in that huge cut on Montiel eye, which greatly helped Valdez.
If not for the cut, this would have been a seesaw battle.
Make no mistake about it, Montiel will win his fight with Donire. For all his speed, and movement he is way to easy to be found.
I have tremendous respect for Montiel, but I can't pick against Donaire after seeing him at 118. A classic case of a guy on his way up against one on the way down.
Donaire has most physical advantages but so most of montiel opponents when fighting him.
I think Montil will catch him in a bout similar to the one with hazegawa but in the later rounds.
But its a tough fight to call.
montiel.... i think donaire will be too cautios to throw anything big to avoid getting countered sort of like the concepcion fight but with montiel he will not be able to handle the pressure , the power and the skills of montiel....he will get outworked ...
donaire had a spectacular and complete performance on his last fight... boy got some serious speed, ring savvy, good footwork, quick counters, smart feints, great conditioning, power on both hands...
montiel had a great 2010 with 4 fights winning them all by stoppage including his fight against hasegawa (3-1 favorite)... 3 division champ veteran with 1 knockout power (head or body shot), got speed, high punch rate, underrated footwork, always in tremendous shape, with tons of championship experience....
whose got the advatnage:
power: montiel (77% KO rate against donaire's 68%)
speed: donaire (donaire got slight edge in overall speed and footwork)
ring generalship: even
conditioning: even (both fighters are always in great shape)
wear and tear: donaire will be more fresh coming in (less wars)
experience: montiel, hands down
corner: slight advantage on donaire's corner (garcia) against montiel's father as chief trainer
who will win: my mind is crossed between these 2 talented fighters until i see which hands will be raised on fight night.. the fight is an absolute toss-up which makes it very exciting for the fans.. given also that both fighters are willing to exchange which will make this fight a great war while it last... but montiel's experience and ring smarts might give him the advantage to cut the ring more effectively, hence, neutralizing donaire's reach and speed advantage... i'm not clearly picking montiel to win clearly, but FOR ME, i think montiel can pull this out...
Donaire. He will use his height and reach to time and counter Montiel. I see Montiel trying to get inside for some hooks and Donaire catching him with flush lefts or an uppercut to drop Montiel. I feel Donaire beats him via TKO or UD by at least 3 rds.
Donaire: height 5′ 6″ / 168cm
reach 5' 8″ / 173cm
Montiel: height 5′ 4″ / 163cm
reach 5' 6½″ / 169cm
Montiel by Ko 5
Montiel has face true banta in Hasegawa and Jhonny Gonzalez
While Donaire has fought minimuweight, lightfly, fly fighters Manuel Vargas and Raul Martinez, Hernan Marquez shiiit come on really all these dudes are the same come foward fighters while Hasegawa and Jhonny are boxer punchers Montiel wins not too easy but wins this fight
Nonito better not fuk around with his stance. Montiel has the pop to ko anyone at 118. But Nonito is far far to skilled. I don't think anyone can beat him at 118.
the one thing that Montiel can capitalize on is Donaire's bravado...it's my main concern in this fight
there are many instances in Donaire fights where you'll catch him sitting there and loading up...he'll fire single punches and its a dangerous trait that he has...if he becomes one-dimensional in this fight, then the outcome becomes a toss up...similar to Vanes, both guys have a tendency to abandon game plans and attempt to brawl
although, as a fight fan, i'd like to see him do that every now and then (for entertainment value) he needs to show major discipline and stick with the gameplan of boxing
IF Montiel can lure Nonito into a firefight, it becomes anyone's game...BUT if you see Donaire stepping back and jabbing his way out of those situations, its gonna be a tough night for the warrior from Los Mochis
Yeah those are my exact thoughts. I think Montiel's experience even being the most prominent aspect to his advantage, it can be the most dangerous for Donaire. If Montiel makes Donaire abandon the jab it can be a bad thing for Donaire.
I'm exited about the fight, the true winner will be us the fans if the fight doesn't turn into a stinker.
the only edge i can give montiel is experience...having more tough fights and tougher opponents. he has experienced picking himself up from the floor and eventually win the fight. in short, he's been in wars that donaire has never been before.
i doubt though that is enough for him to overcome donaire's advantages and win the fight. donaire's definitely has the edge in boxing skills, height, reach and handspeed. i would say they're equal in punching power. heart and toughness...well montiel of course is more tested but donaire showed he had it too especially in the darchi fight. he was merely a prospect then but he didn't get intimidated a bit.
my prediction of course is a win by donaire but it's not going to be easy for him. the first one to land the big one can win the fight but in terms of what they can do, donaire will outpunch montiel.
true, Donaire isn't a southpaw but he has shown in recent fights that he can actually switch stances and do very well...another tool that he can fall back on if he needs to change strategies mid-fight
True but when he does so, his combinations are more reckless. I think Donaire's best bet is to use his jab a lot instead of being really explosive. Forcing Montiel to open up for wide punches and countering with straight rights. It's a badass fight where I hate to see a loser but my heart will always be with Montiel.
I put all the money I won from bradley on Donaire.
he'll win by KO.
It's simple really.
Donaire is big, extremely fast and powerful.
Montiel on the otherhand is tiny but does pack a good punch.
Montiel is going to have to try to get inside on donaire which means he'll constantly be coming forward, he's going to have to eat 4-5 shots to land his 1. That's not good if you're up against a superior boxer with superior handspeed superior footwork etc.
All you got to do is watch this short video of the bigger Valdez having his way with Montiel and you'll understand montiel is in for a tough night
The Valdez fight is only relevant in terms of size. Montiel was having a bad time due to the cut that only became worse due to headbutts and Valdez' southpaw stance. We've seen how much trouble southpaws have given Montiel, Mark Johnson, Valdez and Z Gorres. Donaire isn't a southpaw.
I don't think Montiel needs to fight on the inside regardless of his size, he has been a pretty good counterpuncher and the pressure will only be applied on the later rounds. When Donaire fails to really hurt Montiel, hes going to go back to Concepcion mode.
i have THE utmost respect for Montiel...he's a little badass and has the power to not just make Donaire respect him but even stop him
however, Nonito has many many tools in his arsenal and i see him winning widely on points if he doesn't get stupid in there
I agree 100% very well said
