Outside of Mayweather and Pacquaio, who will go down as greater than miguel cotto in his era, shane mosley was part of the tito trinidad/odlh/hopkins/jones era
maybe one of the top 5 most overrated boxers of his generation Next to Margarito and Judah and I actually like Cotto
who did Cotto beat a past prime Mosley and Judah?
No. Of currently active fighters I'd rank Pac, PBF, Hopkins, Wlad and Marquez above him, and several others jostle him for company. Cotto's a top fighter though, and one's who's never skimped on fighting the best opposition he could. So for that reason alone he should be respected.
People mentioned the Klits and I think they should be ranked over Cotto too. Even Calzaghe as well even though everybody knows I don't respect Calzaghe that much. Dawson had his chance to pass Cotto, but he messed it up by getting beat by Pascal. I'd still rank Cotto over Chad Dawson, but that's not saying much.
As far as his skills and resume, possibly. However, he didn't win the two biggest fights he had, which will count against him. Still, he's a fairly skilled fighter and was willing to test himself against the best.
An incredible list.
Manny Pacquiao.
Antonio Margarito.
Zab Judah.
Carlos Quintana.
Joshua Clottey.
Shane Mosley.
Paulie Malignaggi.
Ricardo Torres.
Against these names, he went 6(3) - 2(2). Not the best record, but he was willing to face ANYONE. All the people on those lists have been champions of alphabet organizations and Judah was a former Welterweight champion of the world. A few of the names were also pound-for-pound caliber fighters and all were ranked in the top 10 of their divisions at the time that he faced them.
Hell, Yuri Foreman isn't half bad, either.
Not sure if I would say he was top 5, but I'd definitely say he was up there.

How can I deny Cotto's place among the great top fighters of this generation? He fought everybody available, he doesn't talk trash, he doesn't make excuses, he suffers in silence in defeat, he gives respect to his defeated opponents... how can't you not like this fighter?
This dude is a true warrior, whatever demons he acquired after that Marg and Pac defeats I hope are gone forever and life as a true fighter goes on for him.
I don't mind if people have Cotto over Margarito in terms of P4P. I can see it and I might even agree with it. Because, to me H2H doesn't really decide P4P.
But, being undefeated in a division has nothing to do with P4P.
And, to say he rolled right through the 140 division is a bit misleading. Since he didn't fight the best in that division. And, had a couple fights where he went life and death against 2nd-3rd tier opponents.
It has a lot to do actually, especially for people who dont climb up in divisions like the heavyweights.
So what if he's not undefeated. He fought the best there were in the division. He never really skipped anyone like Cotto did. Cotto would of lost to Hatton/Mayweather at 140.
Beating a one legged Foreman and fighting Mayorga who is super washed up is doing his thing? ok whatever.
All I said with the Hatton-Cotto comparison is that their resumes are just about as good as one another almost and Cotto's fan boys attacked me with the swiftness. I never said I thought Hatton could beat Cotto head to head. But if we are talking about Cotto having to fight him in the UK when Hatton had good stamina and a better chin like he did when he fought Tszyu I think that version of Hatton was a pretty tough guy. I think if that version of Hatton showed up, Cotto-Hatton would be almost a pick em fight. But if they fought at 147 and the version who practically got beat by Collazo fought Cotto, I'd probably pick Miguel.
The head to head match up wasn't what I was talking about though. I just said that I thought Hatton should maybe get the edge in resume since he unified a couple of the belts at 140 and Cotto never even earned one unless you think Pinto is a great win.
I agree with Jones, Morales, and Barrera not being in the same generation. But, why isn't Hopkins? He has been on the top elite level and very effective throughout Cotto reign. He is even a top LHW right now.
Exactly. You can't rank Cotto over guys who are still going strong even if they are older because if a guy like Hopkins is still competing at a high level and Glen Johnson is doing the same then it is fair to compare them to Cotto if they are not done yet. And in my view I don't think Cotto is a better fighter than those guys. And this thread made me think of someone else who should be ranked over Cotto. And it's Sergio Martinez. That shouldn't have been the case before Martinez developed the resume he had. But if he beats Dzinziruk to go along with the other victories he has achieved and you still rank Cotto over him then that's just being a dumb ass nuthugger.
So we can't compare a guy like Martinez with Cotto just because he's in his mid thirties? That's stupid. That is really why guys like Hopkins and Martinez should be considered part of Cotto's era because they are still at the top of their game or at least Hopkins appears to be still.
Margarito isnt even undefeated in his own division while Cotto rolled right through the lightwelterweight division and is doing his thing in the lighmiddleweight div.
Cotto is the better P4Pounder

No way Cotto is P4P better than Margs, yeah even Winky is higher than Cotto!

I would put Cotto exactly #5
Pacquiao
Mayweather
Hopkins
JMM
Cotto
Klitschko could replace Hopkins, JMM and Cotto, but I dont really know just how good the heavyweight division was in this generation.
