As most fans already know Puerto Rican boxing star Miguel Cotto will be facing dangerous puncher Ricardo Mayorga from Nicaragua. This fight is scheduled to take place this upcoming March in Las Vegas. According to most boxing analysts and experts Miguel Cotto should come out of this fight victorious, with many saying he will stop the Nicaraguan brawler within the distance! When I initially herd about the fight I couldn’t have agreed more.
Simply put I was expecting a relatively easy win for Miguel. But as I started to think deeper about the fight the more I started to realize that this fight may not only be very competitive, but the possibilities of an upset may not be so farfetched after all. As the saying goes in boxing, “styles make fights” and only two fighters have managed to defeat Miguel Cotto. Those two fighters are obviously Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito. The one thing Pacquiao and Margarito have in common is they both love to come forward and bring the pressure.. They both also carry above average power in both hands. Ricardo Mayorga has all of these attributes; he comes forward all night applying pressure. He also carries serious pop in both hands. We have learned from the past that this is a bad combination for Junito.
It has been proven that Cotto can be broken down and has a tendency to sometimes fatigue, especially against fighters that love to press forward. Miguel Cotto is also sometimes not the hardest fighter to hit and that is something Mayorga will look to take advantage of when he throws his punches. I can definitely see El Matador possibly walking Miguel down and wearing him out. In my humble opinion Miguel Cotto has his work cut out for him do to the stylistic disadvantages. I believe it will turn out to be an interesting fight..
Mayorga has never had good stamina, and Cotto is great with body shots.
As long as Cotto does not just trade the whole fight, I see him possibly stopping Mayorga with a body attack.
Mayorga hits hard and will always have the punchers chance. He doesn't apply alot of pressure and at times is not active enough. If Cotto uses his skills either he stops him or UDs him.
But in the end this is boxing and anything can happen
Mark my words, Cotto is going to look a lot stronger than people expect out of him at 154.
His overall skill set IMO will be too much for Mayorga at this point of his career. Also, if the stories surfacing about his right arm are true, I expect to see a lot more combination punching from Cotto as well as going to the body.
Still a dangerous fight early on for Cotto, but down the stretch he's breaking Mayorga down.
your focusing on cottos weakness and not mayorgas weaknesses
cotto does have problems with pressure fighters but mayorga does has size but will be able to make weight healthy and mayorga can not fight a guy with a good jab who his mentally strong
cotto will work the jab and work into positions to unload body punches and land his left hook to either body or head this is a mismatch mayorga his old and will be stopped under 8 rounds fact!!!!
Yea I agree, the only way this is a "bad style" match up is if Cotto decides to be stupid and stand and trade and even then, I don't think Mayorga can win this fight.
Cotto made the mistake of standing and trading with Mosley and still won (even though it was very close).
Cotto should destroy Mayorga, this fight is a joke just like Pac vs Margarito was.
Most of these "boxing experts" know nothing about boxing. This is a perfect match up for Cotto. A brawler who's known for getting tired fairly quickly and prone to body shots.
