By Jaime Estades:
El Nuevo Dia Newspaper of Puerto Rico recently reported that Emanuel Steward, Miguel Cotto’s current trainer, stated that Miguel has fought his main fights against Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, and Manny Pacquiao with practically one arm. Seven years ago, Cotto injured his right shoulder in a car accident while traveling to jog at El Morro Castle in Puerto Rico.
His right arm required emergency surgery. After the operation, Cotto renewed his career by depending mostly on his left arm, which he developed into one of the most devastating jabs and left hooks in his division. His right arm was never the same, although Cotto seemed to have kept it as a secret.
In the years since the accident, his right shoulder developed scar tissue that was removed last summer, prompting Cotto to take the rest of the year off while healing. According to El Nuevo Dia, Steward stated that he noticed that during his preparation to fight the then Junior Middle Weight Champion Yuri Foreman, Cotto was not using his right hand as much as he expected him to do during training.
Steward confronted Cotto about whether he had a problem with his right hand, and the typically proud Cotto responded that there was absolutely no problem and that everything was alright. Steward was not convinced but accepted Cotto’s word. However, Steward stated that right after his last fight with Foreman ended, Cotto admitted the pain in his right shoulder had finally become intolerable.
According to Steward, the surgery and six months of recuperation seem to have been extremely beneficial to Cotto. Steward states that Cotto is using his right hand free of pain, with significantly greater frequency, and with more power than before. According to Emanuel, Cotto now has a weapon that he did not have during the last few years and will make him a better boxer.
I think this is true. But would if of made a difference in the Pacquiao fight? No.
maybe, maybe not but if he would have gotten the surgery done back when he got hurt he would have been better off in his future fights.
here's another example of a athlete playing with a injury...
http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nfl/news/story?id=6038519
tom brady had a foot injury for much of this season but played with the injury instead of having surgery right away because of all the games he was gonna have to miss if he had the surgery.
the mistake cotto made was not having the surgery done when the injury happened. he doesn't have to box every day or week so he could've took the time to heal after surgery.
if you follow sports then this isnt a surprise. theres been plenty of athletes in different sports that suffer injuries and play through them instead of getting surgery. the guy in my sig for example(joakim noah)injured his hand early this year and tried to play through it but after a month he couldnt anymore and opted to have the surgery done. he`s gonna miss alot of games because of the surgery(which is the reason he tried to play with the injury in the first place) but when it heals, he will be 100 percent healthy
I suffer from injuries and continue to work hard but yet limited at times. I believe he truly was injured and it hindered his past performances; That's why he got surgery on the shoulder. Good luck Cotto!
Same can be said about the majority of posters here..regardless of race..i kinda hate this forum now..its filled with so many kiddie "fans" frantically making posts/threads blatantly hating on fighters or defending their fighter no matter what....i need to find a fourm with OG fans and students of the game..who can appreciate all fighters and look from the outside in regardless of their favorite fighter....just talk shop u know...but in a perfect world i guess..
We can always dream right?...
Green on the way.
Soooo after 7 years, its just now starting to recover despite the brtual wars he has been into?
Objection: Bull****!
recover from the operation he just had to fix lingering problems he had over the years
His right hand was pretty bad in the Pacquiao fight. It looked good against Mosley though. Steward is automatically going to make Cotto's right hand better over time because that seems to be his niche. I think he has more power in it than Oscar did. He knocked down Bailey, Torres, Judah off the top of my head.
I'm not sure if this is true or Steward just trying to get the people back behind Cotto, but Cotto needed that right hand against Clottey and Pacquiao.
Seeing Clottey reel off 1,2,3 straight left uppercuts in a row, but instead of shooting a right hand counter, watching Cotto throw a counter left hook that would just get blocked was frustrating. All he's done with his right hand since the Mosley fight is leave it short and use it as a decoy.
I don't buy it. Sounds like excuses that Steward is building up to soften the blow when Cotto loses again (not against Mayorga, but anyone better probably beats him at this point).
i remember about the car accident with cotto but i never honestly ever thought that maybe his arm\shoulder wasn't as good as his left because of it but thinking of it now this could very well be true
wow.. I'd fancy him over Pacquaio anyday!!
Hm...nice thought, but imo, even with "energy pills", and a properly healed right arm, he'd never beat Pac. Manny's determination is unparalleled. Cotto doesn't have Pac's "tasmanian devil" attribute.
The harder it gets, the more he loves it. The guy just thrives on his killer instinct. In a true fair fight, i believe he (Cotto) beats margo in the rematch.
in other words cotto ain't torrecampo and singsurat.
this is very plausible
was just watching some of cotto's first professional fights and that right hand was used a lot more often then has recently been the case
interesting to see how this will play out in the margarito rematch
yup in his earlier fights he even threw it differently, now it has become more of a push. It looked like Steward made him throw it correctly against Foreman and it looked alot better but I wonder if that didnt cause him additional pain. If this is even somewhat true Mayorga is in big big trouble.

That would be crazy.I've heard him say he'll beat Margarito & Pacman should they rematch.I'ma be real honest,if Cotto beat Mayorga then Margarito,I want to see him rematch Pacman without any catchweights.
I don't recall Cotto making any excuse for loosing to anyone. That's Stewart talking, but imagine if it were true, well find out if he gets past Mayorga.
He will get past Mayorga solely with his left... The true test is if he gets past Margarito with both hands. I still think even with both hands intact, he still needs a lot of improvement on the stamina department. Imagine what he can do with both hands and a greatly improved stamina.

A warrior never discloses his pains or weaknesses and Cotto is a good example.
Not even his trainers knew how much pain He was going through.
Now I expect a better balance and more complete Cotto than before.
